Late in the 2013-14 season, NBC and ABC launched three new Sunday night dramas — all with single word titles. NBC cancelled Crisis and Believe while ABC renewed Resurrection for a second season. In retrospect, was that a good decision for the alphabet network? Should Resurrection have been cancelled as well?
On Resurrection, a small town in Missouri is turned upside down when long-dead loved ones return after 30 years. The cast includes Omar Epps, Frances Fisher, Matt Craven, Devin Kelley, Mark Hildreth, Samaire Armstrong, Sam Hazeldine, Landon Gimenez, and Kurtwood Smith.
Debuting on March 9th, Resurrection had a great launch with a 3.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 13.9 million total viewers. (Those numbers are about the same as this season’s How to Get Away with Murder’s debut.)
Unfortunately, Resurrection’s ratings dropped about 19% in week two and they kept falling nearly every week of the eight episode season. The seventh installment hit a low of a 1.9 rating with 7.85 million — half of the premiere’s demo rating.

Considering the poor luck that the alphabet network had last year launching new dramas, it wasn’t much of a surprise that ABC renewed Resurrection. They didn’t have much choice. However, the ratings slide was a terrible sign for the future.
Now, the show has been really struggling in season two. After a positive second season debut, the ratings quickly dropped, falling to new series lows week after week. The October 26th installment registered a mere 1.2 rating with 4.36 million.
ABC recently ordered full seasons and additional episodes of many of their new and older shows. It was a telling sign that the network is only producing 14 episodes of Resurrection this season.
Unless the ratings improve, it looks very likely that Resurrection will be cancelled by May. Hopefully, the writers will give viewers some degree of closure before the end.
What do you think? Did you stop watching Resurrection? Should it have been a mini-series? Is competition from The Walking Dead and football the cause of the low ratings? Do you think Resurrection should be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
I think this show should be renewed. I love this show and don’t think they should end it now they cancelled another fav show of mine in the 90 because competing against football and other showed but it lasted I think 6 seasons with two movies attached to it. So let ressurection renew. I loved it from the very first episode and didn’t even miss it while I was in labor with my son.
we love this show PLEASE DONT CANCEL RESERRECTION ITS THR BEST THING ON A SUNDAY
Please do not cancel Resurrection!!! It is a great show!!!! great cast!!!
Great show with a great cast. So dramatic and mysterious which makes it well written. The producers should not cancel the show. They should keep it running in production which will motivate the scenario and the story. It’s the only show I enjoy off of ABC.
I’ve been watching this show since the very first episode and it is by far the BEST show I’ve ever seen! I’m addicted! Lol! I’ll be lost if it gets canceled! I love how its so different than anything else on tv right now. Please keep it around!
I love this show. My husband wasn’t into it after first episode. But by the second I was hooked. He regretted not watching with me when he caught some of it on season 2. He said it looked good. I have to say, I neeeeever watch on Sundays. I might even let go for a few weeks then binge watch 3 or 4 episodes at once. But it’s a shame. Yea it doesn’t have the sexuality or scandal HTGAWT or other shows on have but it doesn’t need that. The story is great and I’m very interested to see what… Read more »
It figures that ABC is considering cancelling Resurrection… that’s what we Americans do, give up before giving anything a real chance. We have a fight with our spouse so we file for divorce. Ridiculous. They ought to try another time slot or another night first, geez.
The time slot may be a factor for the low ratings being up against football, the walking dead, etc… with that said, look at the vast amount of viewers such as myself who are not part of any ”viewer polls/ ratings system” and our only opinions or voices are heard through media such as this. Add in the fact that most people are lazy and do not take action until something is threatened to be taken away; then it is a safe bet that if you have a rating of 1.2, it is more likely to be twice that amount… Read more »
I agree with Iolani. Maybe another day of the week would help tremendously. This show is the only show I look forward to watching on Sunday evenings. But I’d make plans to watch it on any evening. Please keep this GREAT SHOW on!
Great show—but any show on TV that actually has substance is usually cancelled. Most people prefer reality garbage….also just because a lot of viewers 18-49 maybe do not watch it….do they ever consider the older viewers??
Resurrection is a fantastic show! You have to have faith and belief in order to understand and enjoy the show. Give it a chance and open your minds.
We did give it a chance, it had two entire seasons and it never really got better. We’ve gotten no clues about why people are coming back, the government conspiracy angle went entirely south, it’s just week after week of meaningless angst. They had their chance, they blew it.
That shows how much you know Cephus. People love week after week of angst, that’s why they love reality shows.
The show should be renewed. It’s interesting, has a great cast and the twists, turns and straight up mystery of it all is quite compelling.
I’ve almost gotten used to my shows being cancelled, but having a final episode that concludes the series, makes it more bearable. I’d like it if Resurrection gets renewed, but I’m not counting on it. I’ve become a little cynical with the renewal of shows that I think are either garbage or prime time soap operas.
PLEASE DONT CANCEL RESERRECTION ITS THR BEST THING ON A SUNDAY!!! Why can’t you just move it to a different day so I can get more viewers? Please!?!?
I agree its first thing i’ve watched on prime time tv in years
It is a great show great cast great everything.
To those who think it should be cancelled turn the channel.
