This evening, fans of ABC’s Revenge may be in for a surprise. The freshman drama has been replaced by an ABC special with a similar name — Revenge for Real. That’s no doubt the network’s attempt to attract regular viewers to watch a news special. So, has the real Revenge been cancelled? When will it be back?
For those who aren’t familiar with the TV series, Revenge revolves around Emily Thorne (Emily Van Camp), a young woman who comes to the Hamptons with a secret agenda; to exact vengeance on the wealthy people who ruined her family’s life and reputation. The drama also features the talents of Ashley Madekwe, Christa B. Allen, Connor Paolo, Gabriel Mann, Henry Czerny, Joshua Bowman, Madeleine Stowe, and Nick Wechsler.
Revenge debuted to a healthy 3.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 10.0 million total viewers. Week two saw the all-important demo fall 18% and week three dropped another 11%. Over the next several weeks, the ratings rose and fell, dropping as low as a 2.1 demo rating.
The way things were going, it looked like Revenge might be heading for the cancellation pile — like so many failed ABC dramas that had come before it — but the numbers evened off and the show’s been averaging a healthy 2.5 in the demo in 2012. While the show isn’t a big ratings hit, it certainly isn’t a flop either. Revenge’s demo average is actually stronger than that of aging shows like Castle and Private Practice.
Unfortunately, ABC has now put the series on hiatus for four weeks — a bit of a scheduling gamble that could seriously hurt viewership.
ABC News’ Revenge for Real will take over for two weeks and then repeats of a new Thursday night drama, Missing, will fill the slot for two weeks after that. Revenge isn’t slated to return until April 4th. It’s unclear if that night will feature a repeat or one of the six remaining originals.
The way things stand right now, it looks like a sure bet that Revenge will be renewed for a second season. Hopefully, enough viewers will return to watch the show after the hiatus so the ratings don’t drop and put the series’ future in jeopardy.
UPDATE: Revenge will now return on April 11th with a recap show. An original regular episode will air on April 18th and the finale will run on May 23rd.
What do you think? Will this hiatus cause the ratings to drop or do you think Revenge is assured of a season two renewal?

What happened? Revenge got really good and now it’s gone for four weeks. I love this series and really want it to come back and pick up where it left off. This is one of the most intense mystery, crime, drama, thrillers I have ever watched. I can’t wait until season two. Please don’t leave fans hanging. We want to know what happens to Daniel, does Emily stay with Daniel or does Jack win her heart? Do the Graysons finally get caught up in all of their secrets and what happened to Amanda? Was she murdered by the asian businessman? (Sorry… Read more »
REALLY disappointed! Revenge fans want the show! Can’t believe it’s been put on hiatus and there are 6 more episodes that were filmed and we have to watch re-runs and Revenge for Real! Geez! Who made this stupid decision?
Yeh , good idea, will make another station my favorite,,, one that doesn’t keep running reruns with no explanations. Booooo ABC
I couldn’t believe Revenge was not on tonight…..I look forward to that time slot and that show. I’ve become very attracted to each character on the show…Especially Emily!
What are you doing to us??? We love the show why stop it now??? Get on the Ball ABC,
Get our favorite show back on the air!!!!!
do you all like playing with peoples minds, you get hooked on a certain program and them wham! it ‘s gone, now this murder in the hamptons, which has already been a tv movie already! now we wait till april for maybe a new show or maybe a rerun!!! i have decided not to watch this channel anymore! i’ll write my own ending!!! thanks for nothing!!!!!!!!
I hope Revenge comes back. I was shattered to see this new one on and want my original Revenge back. I loved the show and all of the characters in it.
It is one of the very few TV shows that I look forward to every week. Too bad we have to be four weeks without it.
I too was very dissapointed the real Revenge show was not on tonight. I set my tape this morning and couldn’t believe it wasn’t on. I really enjoy the show and hope it comes back for many seasons
Come on! Seriously….I finally gave you (ABC) another chance for something on primetime television other than reality television and you are wavering on resigning the show? First “Witches of Eastwick” without any ending. Just leaving the plot up in the air….and I actually said “Last chance for ABC.” If the show cancels, I am finished with Abc. I have so enjoyed this show, the actors and the plot line. I actually look forward to my Wednesday night 9:00 p.m. time slot for Revenge. As much as I love Modern Family, I will abandon ABC for good. If you do read… Read more »
Love the show! I get frustrated when I look forward
To Wed night, then something else is on. Seems like
It is only on every 2 or 3 weeks. I don’t like the Revenge
For Real at all. Disappointed again. Now I read it won’t be
On for 4 weeks. When there is something good on, let it be!!!!
My husband and I plan our evening around this show. Yes the story line seems to have slowed down now and then, but that happens. Other shows on the air must have ratings far lower than Revenge. Please keep it going and bring it back sooner than four weeks.
I was so disappointed when the “real” Revenge was not on tonight. Looked forward to it all week. I can wait for four more weeks, but I don’t want to. I’m hoping to be able to continue to watch new episodes for a long, long time.
Im so sick of them skipping episodes and it’s so new on top of it. You guys over at abc need to stop jerking around with the good things you have going for you. It’s irritating as hell and makes me want to stop watching your channel all together!
The show is great . I agree with the other comments, it is the tv stations fault the ratings are off. Just put the show on every week and it’s followers will be faithful. Since the first airing the show has not been consistent. Skipping weeks and repeating the same episodes over does not help your ratings! Just give us the show, we will be there.
Love this show.where is it?
This is a very good show! I hope it will stick around a few seasons.
