Below, watch the cast announce Freeform has renewed the Shadowhunters TV series for a second season. Star Katherine McNamara broke the news, at the top of a live chat.
Based on the Cassandra Clare’s YA fantasy book series, The Mortal Instruments, Shadowhunters features Clary Fray (McNamara), a human-angel hybrid who hunts demons. The cast of Shadowhunters also includes: Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa, and Harry Shum, Jr.
In its first season ratings, Shadowhunters has averaged 0.45 in the 18 to 45 year old demographic, and as of March 10, was drawing an average total audience 1.039 million viewers.
Shadowhunters premiered January 12, 2016, the same day ABC Family rebranded as Freeform. The Hollywood Reporter says, “The debut ranks as Freeform’s second-best series premiere on record among adults under 50 and adults 25-54. Additionally, the drama ranks as Freeform’s top launch among men under 50 and men 25-54 — as well as its third best among total viewers.”
Clare’s book series was first adapted as a film, The Mortal Instruments. Much like Buffy the Vampire Slayer before it, while the film was not a hit, the story seems to work as a TV series.
