Although CMT cancelled its Sun Records TV show after just one season, the song may continue. The Memphis Flyer reports producers are pitching season two to Amazon and The CW. A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, Jonah Lees, Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
In Sun Records, Sam Phillips (Murray), shepherds young musicians Johnny Cash (Fonteyne), Elvis Presley (Milligan), Carl Perkins (Dustin Ingram) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Christian Lees). These up-and-coming white musicians combine hillbilly country music, with the ’50s R&B sound of African-American artists like Muddy Waters, B.B. King (Castro Coleman), Fats Domino, and Ike Turner (Holliday).
According to the report, Memphis Film and Television Commission boss Linn Sitler said Kevin Kane, president of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, paid the rent on the show’s soundstage here for another month, to give the producers time to pitch the show to other outlets. Here’s more:
CMT already paid for scripts and outlines for season two of the show, Sitler said. So, they are “ready to go” for a second season. She said she has her “fingers crossed” for the meetings with the other networks, though she said “it may be a long shot.”
About $9 million is already set aside in the state budget for season two and season three of “Sun Records.” However, if the show is not renewed, that money all goes back to Nashville in a pot set aside for other film and television projects across the state.
Sun Records hails from Thinkfactory Media. Leslie Greif executive produced the first season with showrunner Gil Grant. Barry Berg served as co-executive producer and Herb Nanas and Colin Escott served as producers. The series is based on the book, Million Dollar Quartet, written by Floyd Mutrux and Escott. CMT confirmed the series cancellation, back in May.
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV show? Would you follow it to The CW or Amazon for a second season?
Please please continue this show. My husband and I both watched it and looked forward to next season. It needs to be promoted more though!
We love “Sun Records”! Please continue this series. If it had been promoted better it would have reached more people. It really deserves a chance. it is one of the best that I have seen.
Oh yes, please, please, please do more seasons of “Sun Records”!! It stopped when those kids were about to change the world of Rock and Roll. I was just a young teenage girl when Elvis exploded onto the scene and this series is so well done and it captures those iconic moments. It was never promoted like it should have been, if it had been, then there would be no question about renewing the series. I found out about it from a friend, who found out about from another friend and I passed it on to my friends, it deserves… Read more »
Yes my husband and I watched it and LOVED it! We were so disappointed to hear there was not a second season! Please bring it back!
CMT had no idea what to do with this series so any network that knows what to do with a show like this would be a better home for it. It looked really good, beautiful filming, but it’s not the true story either. It was watered down and over-fictionalized it for TV. I am a fan of this music and this era, they did not tell it true. If it gets another season they best get it right.
Please cmt continue sun records . I watched every episode of season 1
I would love Amazon to pick up the series!
Was so looking forward to season 2 someone please pick it up!!!
This would be awesome if Amazon picked it up! I was very disappointed that it was cancelled. It is a very well done show. I blame that on the fact that nobody knew about the show because CMT is not that popular of a channel. They need to do a better job of getting the word out. I hadn’t look forward to a weekly tv show since Breaking Bad wrapped up their series.
Please sell SUN RECORDS to another station and publicize it! I didn’t see really any advertisements for it anywhere! I just happened on it by chance. The actors are so talented and make you feel like you are seeing young Elvis and Johnny and the rest and the trial and tribulations they went through to attain their success! If it is renewed I believe you will have a much bigger audience. Us older folks that were teenagers at that time can really relate and are trying to keep rock and roll alive! My grandchildren love it! Keep in mind how… Read more »
Yes, both my husband and myself watched the first season of Sun Records.
We were very disappointed when CMT cancelled it.
Please bring it back!!
Yes season 2
The sets are here… Offices
Juz open the doors & Start!
I watched every episode. I would watch season 2 also. Bring it somewhere preferably on the CW. Older people might watch it but they are not sophisticated enough to go to Amazon.
Loved the series, Sun Records! I was raised during that era and it was great to go back and reminisce about those days. Each episode had me glued to the TV. I will be very disappointed if the show is not continued.
Hope the 2nd season gets a chance. But still puzzled was that the season finale back in April?
