Will the music play on for Sun Records? The CMT TV show recently finished its first season, but what about a second? If renewed, would you keep watching the series?
Based on real events, the music drama follows record producer Sam Phillips (Chad Michael Murray) as he shepherds young musicians Johnny Cash (Kevin Fonteyne), Elvis Presley (Drake Milligan), Carl Perkins (Dustin Ingram) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Christian Lees). The cast also includes Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
The chances of a renewal for Sun Records are uncertain. The show premiered to a decent rating (for a CMT show) of 0.20 in the 18-49 demo and 971,000 viewers. However, the ratings fell considerably over the course of the eight episodes.
Overall, season one averaged a rating of 0.13 in the 18-49 demo and 585,000 viewers. That’s a considerable drop for a new series on a network that is new to scripted programming. Will CMT risk another season? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
What do you think? Have you seen Sun Records? Do you think the show should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Would you watch?
5/5 update: CMT has decided there won’t be a second season of Sun Records. Details here.
We want Sun Records back badly and on an accessible TV statiom. You producers handled the show wrong by not putting it on a TV station that
People have access to!
We love the show so looking forward to another season. We recorded Sun Records and Nashville . Great shows , great story lines. Bring Sun Records back
We love the show, unfortunately trouble recording CMT when we watch it all the time, can’t get Nashville either, ugh! Is this a Comcast issue?
I was just getting into the show. I don’t understand why the want plays the next seasons, I really like it and Elvis is the man and I was looking forward to seeing what was going to happen next. I am still trying to put my finger on what went wrong. that show is no different from Nashville and I think Sun Records is better, but that just my word against millions of others viewers. it is still good and I am a Blk female who loves country TV. they made a bad mistake !!!!!!!! HUGE ONE
I would definitely watch Sun Records. I never missed an episode—it was the only show I looked forward to watching every week! PLEASE DON’T CANCEL SUN RECORDS—it would be a huge mistake!!!!!!!!!
I just read that CMT canceled season 2 of Sun Records. This really breaks my heart. Finally had a series I actually looked forward to every week. Had it set on DVR just in case I wasn’t able to watch. CMT please please Please don’t take my SUN RECORDS away
I love it and will watch it. I would like to see more music added.
I tried to post a comment it wouldn’t let. I love Sun Record best series I’ve seen in a long time I hope it continues
It is a great show……why would MCT cancel a series about recording icons? Reality TV is so bad. This was a welcome breath of fresh sort yo television. My husband and I saw the stage production, The Million Dollar Quartet. It was wonderful with music that will be popular forever. YES! I want the watch season two. Do not take this show off I’d tecair.
Love the Sun Records! Will definitely watch season two!
I saw Billion Dollar Quartet on Broadway. Bring on Season 2!
I saw Illini Dollar Quartet on Broadway. I love Sun Recirds. Need a Season 2.
I would definitely continue watching it, it was very entertaining. Please renew it for another season!!

This was a fun series. The actors were credible, the famous cameos were a great touch. But it always felt that season one was just the introduction before everything got interesting – Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee – they were just kids, and Carl Perkins was a blink and you’ll miss him. It’ a shame that CMT didn’t understand that the ratings they got for the “prelude” (basically a bunch of kids) would exponentially grow when we started to see them growing into being stars. This was the only show I ever watched on CMT. I guess I expected more of… Read more »
About 10 of us from 5 families watched this every week and looked forward to it. Our favorite show. A group of 50’s 60’s rockers who appreciate great writing, excellent acting and real music. Want to see next season. When does it start back?
