Television can be a bittersweet business, full of cancellations and renewals. This time around, Sweetbitter has ended up getting the short end of the stick. Starz has cancelled the low-rated dramedy series after two seasons.
Sweetbitter stars Ella Purnell, Tom Sturridge, Caitlin FitzGerald, Paul Sparks, Evan Jonigkeit, Eden Epstein, Jasmine Mathews, and Daniyar. Based on the novel from series creator Stephanie Danler, the drama centers on Tess (Purnell), a 22-year-old woman who moves to New York City in search of a new life and winds up training at one of the city’s top restaurants. In the second season, as Tess comes into her own, she realizes she has to learn how to play the game, in order to survive.
The first season of Sweetbitter averaged just a 0.06 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 164,000 viewers. The second season averaged a 0.03 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 93,000 viewers. Compared to the first season, that’s down by 54% and 44%, respectively.
While the ratings were quite low, the cancellation is still a bit of a surprise since it was produced by Starz’s corporate parent, Lionsgate. The 14th and final episode of Sweetbitter aired on August 18th.
What do you think? Did you watch the Sweetbitter TV show? Are you sorry that there won’t be a third season?
I just found this show streaming on Stan in Australia. I absolutley loved it! Cinematically it was so elegant. Everything about it was so stylish. It would be great if it came back.
My husband and myself really enjoyed this series!
Very disappointing and not the first time we have found a show we enjoyed that was canceled after the first two or three series!
I loved Sweetbitter. One of my favorite shows. So sorry it was canceled.
Very disappointed this show Sweetbitter had great potential it was not promoted at all! I’m canceling my Starz
I loved Bittersweet- it was new, real and in the moment. Loved the complex characters and learned a few things too. I’m so sorry it was cancelled- I’m confident the ratings would have been better if only people knew it was there to watch. I happened upon it one night and was hooked.
Starz charges me 99 cents a month to stay with them. If they need viewers that badly maybe they should actually promote their shows more. I only heard of this show because I caught it while browsing for something to watch. I like numerous cooking shows/chefs on social media but not once have I gotten an ad for this show. It’s too bad, I really wanted to see where season 3 ended up going.
I was so upset when you cancelled Now Apocalypse and I forgot that I also watched Sweetbitter and loved it even more but you went and cancelled that two! What’s wrong with you people? Well I truly have no reason to pay for STARZ now!! 🙁
Absolutely loved this show….. This was going somewhere on to be one of the best series!
I am honestly bummed.
The entire show up to this point was character building and slowly kindling the deeper truths … then the lights go out, sucks.
I’m soooo tired of getting into these series that only last 1 maybe 2 season then poof their gone with no finale!!!! SweetBitter was a good program with drama, fun, and complexity. First of all 6-8 episodes does not a season make. The 6 episodes of season 1 combined with the 8 of season 2 was really just a season. The show was just getting good n juicy when it’s shut down?? I enjoyed the she and loved its perspective. I’m disappointed. It won’t be back!!
I am so utterly outraged that this show was cancelled, on such a cliff hanger no less! How dare they?! I have worked in fine dining since I was 19 years old and this is the first and only show that I am aware of that portrays the front of house perspective so accurately. Unbelievable. Please PLEASE please GOD let another network pick this show up.
I am heartbroken.
Very dissatisfied by this news… I couldn’t wait to see what happens next. The novel is well written and a very interesting story. The show was even better! The characters and their plots were a lot of fun to watch play out, as much fun as reading about them. I was really looking forward to season 3. And just as others have already stated, it just need more publicity…not many folks may have even had access to Starz…
Very disappointed to read this. Sweet bitter is a clever, well produced realistic show that might just have needed more publicity to get the ratings where they deserve to be.
Such a shame but not surprising.
This is a show that required real attention and had to be watched from start to end to really understand it.
Sadly, in this world of ‘attention span of a goldfish’ that many viewers have, it never really stood a chance.
I worked in food biz for many years. This show was an honest and gritty look at life on the other side. Really sad that we don’t get to see Tess continue to grow. Maybe, just maybe it can find purchase on other outlet!
Very, very disappointed!
