Television can be a bittersweet business, full of cancellations and renewals. This time around, Sweetbitter has ended up getting the short end of the stick. Starz has cancelled the low-rated dramedy series after two seasons.
Sweetbitter stars Ella Purnell, Tom Sturridge, Caitlin FitzGerald, Paul Sparks, Evan Jonigkeit, Eden Epstein, Jasmine Mathews, and Daniyar. Based on the novel from series creator Stephanie Danler, the drama centers on Tess (Purnell), a 22-year-old woman who moves to New York City in search of a new life and winds up training at one of the city’s top restaurants. In the second season, as Tess comes into her own, she realizes she has to learn how to play the game, in order to survive.
The first season of Sweetbitter averaged just a 0.06 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 164,000 viewers. The second season averaged a 0.03 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 93,000 viewers. Compared to the first season, that’s down by 54% and 44%, respectively.
While the ratings were quite low, the cancellation is still a bit of a surprise since it was produced by Starz’s corporate parent, Lionsgate. The 14th and final episode of Sweetbitter aired on August 18th.
What do you think? Did you watch the Sweetbitter TV show? Are you sorry that there won’t be a third season?
I am very disappointed that Sweetbitter will not be renewed. I just discovered the series and really enjoyed the first two seasons!
I was looking forward to another season and was looking for the return date! I think it’s a good show and good cast and had good storyline for each member. You will be missed Sweetbitter.
Loved this show, so sorry to see it go.
I loved Sweetbitter, and am very disappointed that STARZ cancelled it. The show had a great storyline, great actors, writers, etc. Bring it back STARZ!!! Bring it back!
I really don’t know who does the ratings, but Sweetbitter was an excellent series about true life and actually how life is in the city. It needs to come back as we need more shows like this. The actors were all great in the variety of roles that they had and I’m speaking for an awful lot of people bring back the show
Really liked sweet bitter series. Looking forward to season three. It would be great if it came back!
Not fair, to end the last episode like this, leaving us hanging! At least follow up with a few more episodes. There are many other shows on Starz not half as good as this series.
I am sad to see this show go. I found the show completely accurate of the industry. There’s a great show. Especially for people that work in the industry. And I really don’t like the fact that I was left not knowing what happens to the characters I have fallen in love with.
Sweet Bitter was edgy and most enjoyable, especially for those who have worked in the industry. Good characters, actors. I’m really disappointed that the 3rd season was cancelled.
Why are all the really good shows canceled too soon? Wake up, Executives! This was one well written, interesting show that once again the TV Executives didn’t give it enough time to get a following. Why don’t producers and investors understand the NEW model of how people watch and enjoy series? Simply fund an idea to its end so that there is a closing. Have the balls to commit to the story and make the writers finish the story in 16 to 20 episodes like Korean shows do! So much more satisfying to let a story be completed and done… Read more »
I am very sorry to see it go. So nice to see a show based on a time right before ‘smart’ phones ruined everything. But I am not surprised it failed… Nobody ever got murdered and there was no CG. What a concept…
Noooooooooooo 🙁
So disappointed about the show being canceled. I really enjoyed the first 2 seasons and hate there isn’t a 3rd coming.
I’m disappointed, I really liked the show.
I loved this show. It upsets me when you join ,watch the shows and come to find out its next season is cancelled. Does that mean there could be a possibility of another. Bummed out.
Couldn’t cancel another dorky show, you had to cancel the 1 show I watch. Should have slotted it in a different season, besides summer, its like you set it up for failure.
