TNT has announced that The Closer is returning on Monday, July 11th, with 10 new episodes. Will that be the end of cable’s most popular TV series? Not quite.
Last July, TNT announced that The Closer had been renewed for a seventh season of 15 episodes. In December, they revealed that season seven was now considered the final season and there wouldn’t be an eighth. Series star Kyra Sedgwick apparently felt it was time to call it quits. She said, “I want to thank TNT and Warner Bros. Television, as well as the incredible fans of The Closer, for all of their unwavering support over the last seven years.”
In January, TNT began rethinking their wanting to end their most popular series. It was later decided to add six more episodes to the order. So, 10 will air this summer, another five will air over the winter, and then the final six installments will run during the summer of 2012.
The final six episodes will serve as a goodbye to Sedgwick’s Brenda Leigh Johnson. They’ll also set up a potential spin-off series that would probably include the rest of The Closer characters and a new lead. At last report, the new show will be called Major Crimes and focus on the behind-the-scenes deal-making that keeps dangerous criminals off death row.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that The Closer will be around for awhile longer or would you prefer that TNT air all 21 episodes in one grouping?

My all time favorite crime drama show. I wish it would continue as is than one more final season. Will certainly followed the great cast and characters in the spin off series to be called Major Crimes. Sadly, I fear the loss of Kyra will create too large a void to be filled as happens in many Star replacement series.
This is a great show with great writing…I’ll miss Kyra, but I think you should keep all the present cast and writers as well as the title, and replace Kyra with a new lead…your clever writers can figure out a way….
The closer is one of the best shows on the air.. ever..
Why oh why do they always take my favorite shows! best show on TV!!!!! Please don’t leave Kyra – We love you! As for a show with the rest of the characters, we also love them of course and will be glad to have it, But it won’t be the same without “Brenda” !
I hate that this show is ending. It is one of maybe 5? shows that keep me even having TV service at all. 99% of tv now is complete junk, reality, garbage. I love everyone on this show (except Raydor) and I wait & wait for it to come back every season. Why why do they cancel all the good shows and keep the crap?? L&O LA, gone, The Unusuals, gone, Pushing Daisies, and Better off Ted? all great!! i honestly don’t understand it.
Kyra and the cast are wonderful to watch. Whey are right up there with NCIS in my book!
I’ve loved the show since the very first episode. Who could forget Brenda (Kyra) saying ‘if I liked being called a ***** to my face, I’d still be married’. Why is it ending? Some sites say it wa Kyra’s decision, others say it’s because TNT wants more younger viewers. I hope it’s not the latter, where is it said that older people can’t have good tv shows. Think it through TNT, older individuals usually have the money to support your sponsors, are often more devoted viewers, are more likely to spend the money to buy the series on dvd as… Read more »
Don’t end the show Kyra! We love this show and as someone else wrote, it’s one of the very few we really look forward to watching. We love the characters, plot etc. Please rec0nsider!
I loved this show, the interplay of characters was great, I wish they would continue. It is one of the few I look forward to.
I am so upset that the Closer is going off the air. I love all the characters and how they interact with each other. Monday night was the hilight of my week because I knew I would be watching the “Closer” All I am asking is that they don’t kill off anyone and that Brenda and Friz don’t end up getting a divorce or anything. They are so cute together I would hope that the show would end in a happy note with everyone still doing the same thing, in case they want to do a special show or movie… Read more »
Well done Kyra Sedgwick for knowing not to flog something good to death.
Better to call it quits while the show is still excellent and has had a good long run, than to spin it our until its a shadow of itself.
Love Brenda Leigh and will be sorry to see her go but would be interested to see if the spin off will have the same quality.
It amazes me that “The Closer” would even be considered to be cancelled. It is not only the best show on TV right now but the best one !!! Everyone I know loves this show and are complaining there is nothing else to watch. All the people I know are getting so sick of the reality shows they’re beginning not to even watch TV. Please talk Kyra Sedgwick into continuing if you don’t want to lose a lot more of your viewers.
I hate that the show is ending as we know it, but we may get a spin-off that could be just as good. It should also have some of the same characters but Kyra wants out and as an aspiring actress I can understand her wanting to take on new challenges. I hope that TNT has enough sense to cast Mary McDonnell(Sharon Raydor) as the new lead.
Please do not cancel the show; one of the few great shows–or even good shows remaining.
