Jason Ritter, star of The Event, tweeted today that, “I finished my last day of shooting on The Event. These last four episodes have been amazing! Catch up on old ones so you’re ready Monday!”
Talking about the show’s future, Ritter also wrote, “I would say if the ratings keep doing what they did on Monday, Season 2 is very likely! But we need all of your help to spread the word!!”
While we don’t know exactly what NBC has in mind for their 2011-12 schedule, it seems that Ritter is being overly optimistic about The Event’s chances for a second season. The show started off with very healthy ratings back in September but they quickly declined to very unhealthy levels.
The Event premiered with a 3.6 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 10.88 million viewers, and then quickly slid downward. By November, the numbers fell to a 1.7 rating and 5.54 million viewers. They stayed at that level for the remainder of 2010 and then NBC put the series on hiatus, promising a relaunch in early 2011.
When The Event returned in early March, it seemed like a lot of people had lost interest and/or figured that the series had already been cancelled. Since the return, it’s been averaging a 1.2 demo rating and 4.39 million viewers. Those are horrible numbers, even by NBC’s present standards. Remember, the network cancelled Undercovers when it was averaging a 1.4 rating and 5.97 million viewers.
This week’s episode of The Event was up by 18% in the demo. That’s very encouraging until you realize that the percentage increase is based on the numbers from a week earlier, a 1.1 rating and under four million. Those are CW-size ratings and it’s not hard to improve on those.
If fans of The Event can rally and the numbers keep increasing for the last four episodes of the season, NBC could very well consider renewing it. That’s going to be tough at this point.
If that doesn’t happen, let’s just hope that the writers wrap up the season in a fulfilling way for the fans who have stuck with it. The finale airs May 23rd.
What do you think? Does The Event still have a chance for season two? Will you watch the final episodes of the season? Do you think they’ll give enough closure in case it’s cancelled?

I’m doubting they’ll pick up a second season. Although I do really like the show in many aspects. It definitely started slow, but it picked up. However V got a second season and that was one of the worst tv shows I’ve seen, not to mention a remake.
Please watch naysayers!! Those of us who have stayed with the show LOVE it!!! It is at such an exciting place – reminiscent of Stephen King’s The Stand… 2 billion humans at risk in America from mega virus, Sean walker now becoming killer savior of the world.. We have a party every Monday night, and we are thrillin’!!!
@Adam, I’m sorry that the first three episodes didn’t do it for you, but the show has gotten really good, especially in the last four or five episodes. You’re missing out on what has become probably the most underrated show in many years. For me, I haven’t gotten into a show like this since Star Trek: The Next Generation. @Tha Critic: I think you are just like many of the naysayers of the show. You’re an idiot. I can appreciate it if the show is not for you, but no one was asking for your opinion. We get it –… Read more »
It is an ok show. Worth keeping for Taylor Cole tho
I LOVE this show and would be extremely upset if it were cancelled! I do not think it can finish up in a proper way with just a few episodes left. There is too much going on! PLEASE NBC, renew this show for another season and stop with the 3 month breaks! This is why you lost viewers, not because the show is not good.
To the person who said they watched the first 3 episodes but stopped because it was so slow… you are missing a great show! It has totally changed since those first few episodes!
I really enjoy the poster who writes “I don’t like it” followed by “I’ve never seen it.”
Ignorant and proud … what a way to go through life.
I watched the first three episodes, but it was soooooo slow. We like Jason Ritter as an actor, but even he couldn’t make this turkey worth watching.
if NBC hadn’t pulled The Event for several months in the winter and had continually advertised it, maybe the show wouldn’t be in trouble.
All of you naysayers, if they write the series finale correctly there can be a spinoff series, or a mini series, nothing is *toast* or impossible. I am hoping for a season two written with quality and meaning. Better a miniseries or spinoff than season two decay.
It is up to us. We know what we have to do. Now let’s do it.
Thanks for updating your averages. My source was the TV By The Numbers final Monday per Travis Yanan’s site, which are the ones shown on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Event_episodes I don’t even need to check that the 4.39 million in your update is the early ratings numbers, and I’m perfectly happy with you using those numbers versus the final numbers. In either case, thanks for the update. It’s much better than the 3.64 million originally in the article. Admittedly, the number still sucks. I am hopeful that with The Voice now on the network, and with us getting closer to the actual… Read more »
Decent show, but it’s toast.
Hellz yeah…The Event…Season 2!
Where are you getting your numbers?
Here are the correct number of viewers since the return:

March 28th: 4.53 million
April 4th: 4.14 million
April 18th: 3.85 million
April 25th: 4.62 million
Average: 4.49 million
If you’re going to bash The Event, please get your facts straight.
I just never really cared at all. I don’t like it. I’ve never watched it and I won’t.
Tha Critic, if you have never watched the show how do you know that you don’t like it?
And if you don’t care, why are you posting?
Love The Event! My whole family is glued to the couch for every Monday episode. We also have a number of neighbors who feel the same, and we all certainly urge NBC to renew it for next season!
