As if a network possessed, FOX renewed The Exorcist TV show, despite hellishly low broadcast ratings in its freshman outing. While the Rance family’s story has concluded — meaning Geena Davis, Alan Ruck, Hannah Kasulka, and Brianne Howey are not returning as series regulars — the horror continues for Father Tomas Ortega (Alfonso Herrera) and former priest Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels). Should fans expect further divine intervention? Will The Exorcist be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
Based on the 1973 feature film and William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel, The Exorcist stars Herrera, Daniels, Kurt Egyiawan, Zuleikha Robinson, John Cho, Brianna Hildebrand, and Li Jun Li. Christopher Cousins and Cyrus Arnold join the FOX horror drama this year, on a recurring basis. In the second season, Father Bennett (Egyiawan) sets out to uncover evil at the Vatican, while Keane and Ortega set off to assist troubled foster children, in the Pacific Northwest.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
12/16 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The first season of The Exorcist on FOX averaged a 0.68 rating in the 18-49 year old viewer demographic and 1.914 million total viewers (live + same day).
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like The Exorcist TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a third season on FOX?
5/11/18 update: FOX has cancelled their low-rated TV show, The Exorcist, after two seasons. Details here.
I really don’t understand why this is not soaring in the ratings. It is one of the best programmes on and I’m watching most of the genre shows on tv at the moment. It’s intelligently written with interesting characters and depth; I hope Fox sticks with it.
It’s the Friday night airing. Most of the viewers in the 18 to 30 year old range go out on Friday night. At least that’s my opinion. Too bad they don’t take into consideration the people who record shows to watch later or people like me that stream shows to avoid all the annoying commercials.
I agree, though the way any broadcaster makes any money is through advertising or subscription fees, so if we are not doing one or the other, then they are rightly not interested in counting us.
All my friends stream now a days to avoid commercials as well as high cost cable companies. This is the way of the future and should be considered.
When I tell people about this show….they’ve never heard of it.
It’s a really good show.
Really needs to be more seasons of The Exorcists.
I would be very sad if it was to end at season 2.
I love the way the episodes are depicted. Compared to other programs. It would be a huge loss. So I be praying for more from The Exorcist series
Really sad that this show is going down in ratings. But thankfully, I think Fox always had cable ratings standards for this show, because this is the kind of show you expect on cable. If it’s going to be cancelled, I at least hope it ends gracefully.
FOX viewership is down. A lot of shows that were doing well previously are on the downswing right now.
I hope they can renew this show for many seasons because it’s different from the rest of their shows. It has legacy potential. Some of the new characters should stay on and there should be more twists and turns…every time I say that I am reminded of Regan’s neck turn!!
God, this show keeps getting better and better!
Really dislike those stupid, inane, different- race family sitcom shows on tv today. Hate what they’ve done to my beloved Archie comics with the subversive “Riverdale” Sick of cop shows, The voice, morning shows and the news. The only thing I enjoy on network TV is ” The Exorcist” and the new doctor show, “the good doctor” The only thing I watch on cable is “The walking dead” and it’s spinoff. And I buy various movies online. The second season of the exorcist is well-acted, directed, with a great story, like the first season, and it’s scaring me. It does… Read more »
I totally agree. This is one of the few shows I really look forward to every week. I get scared and last weeks episode I jumped off the couch. This series is truly exceptional in every way. Even the makeup is terrifying. The only other shows that I like are the good doctor and supernatural and A.H.S. but this series comes first. Please keep the series coming.
Fantastic show. Pains me to see it struggle like this.
This show is flipping “Great”. Good writing acting. It has it all. Me and my GF love this show. And will start promoting it more on social media. Fri is a death sentence for a show as well. I think it should change nights. And the ratings will go up. Just saying. Totally hope there are more seasons to come.
Oh and crime investigation – big sub genre for the exorcist. Still don’t see the lethal weapon cross over happening though, different universe.
FTWD and the Exorcist are underrated television horror shows. They are the best combination of horror and sub genre (psychology, supernatural, drama, romance, emotions). FTWD isn’t far behind from the iconic TWD.
AHS S7 concept is brilliant but the direction is just atrocious. On the contrary, The Exorcist direction is phenomenal.
Most anyone with half a brain has gone off the Walking Dead already. There should be minimum wage paid to anyone that watches the current seasons, as it is damn near torture.
The other thing is that millions of people like to watch these shows during their “secret times” and not with family. Lucifer is the best show on Fox, but the Exorcist can be a masterpiece if given the right promotion.
Totally agree! My husband and I both love watching Lucifer together, and think it is hilarious with really clever, well written material. However, I watch The Exorcist alone during “Mommy DVR Time” with my snacks when the kids know to not bother me! lol
Again, we should pay more consideration to DVR ratings. But this season looks really exciting to me.
I had high hopes for the AHS S7 as the actors are good, but the exorcist is really the best horror genre show out there.
Hope this picks up. This is a billion times better than AHS S7.
If you like scary movies or shows this is excellant…i can’t wait for next week show…
OUCH. I was surprised Fox actually renewed this after the first seasons ratings, there’s no way its going to be renewed again.
Love how people dislike your comment when all you’re doing is stating the obvious.
