Last May, fans of The CW’s sitcom, The Game, were upset to learn that the sitcom had been cancelled after three seasons on the air. Though there was some resolution in the last episode, it was hardly satisfying enough for devoted viewers. The web has recently been abuzz with news that the show is coming back but can you believe it?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of the long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, and Barry Floyd.
Even before the show was cancelled by the CW, there was talk about the possibility of Black Entertainment Television (BET) picking up the show for a fourth year. The cable-channel has been playing the sitcom repeats and the show fits in with their other programming.
In July, Mowry told TV Guide, “[BET chairman and CEO] Debra Lee is trying everything and anything to make this happen. The Game gets higher ratings than BET’s original programming, and we’ve heard there would be a huge marketing campaign. So I personally believe the show would be taken to another level.”

Unfortunately, there’s been little word of any real progress since then. Last week, rumors started circulating that a deal had been struck between BET and the show’s studio, CBS Television. Unfortunately, they turned out to be false.
Last night, Mowry put the rumors to rest. Via her Twitter account, she wrote, “I am so sorry to tell you this, this whole THE GAME thing getting picked up is NOT true! After talking to agents lawyers etc it is not true.” A deal may still happen but, for the moment, there isn’t one.
When or if a new deal is made, it remains to be seen how it would work. The contracts for the cast and creatives have lapsed so new ones would have to be negotiated. Because BET has less money to spend, they’d likely have to take pay cuts.
On top of that, some of those involved with the show have also moved on to other projects and may not be available. Hall is working on CBS’ new sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, Mowry has several projects in the works, and Akil is part of ABC’s new Cougar Town comedy with Courteney Cox Arquette.

i would love to see the game come back. it’s such a shame the shows that cast positive roles are not on tv that long now the simpsons are still up and running and how positive is that.
I would hate to see a great show end like this. Fans love The Game and want to see more. I believe if BET makes a four season possible, they won’t regret it. The tv show The Game deals with real topics and keeps viewers waiting for the next show. The show has touched many peoples lives including mine. BET picking up the show would only make sense. I am a fan of the show and I would hate to see it end. Please being the show back for a fourth season BET!

I think it would a “wise” decision for BET to pick up the show! Due to high ratings of the show I’m sure BET will make plenty of money from the show. So, BET don’t let a “GREAT” opportunity pass you by…. bring the show back!
Hello, I didn’t watch The Game when it first aired but picked up the reruns and loved it. I found myself watching every episode not to mention such an attractive cast. However, you made it real that even people like this have major issues in life. Not to mention race I’m a white viewer and thought the show was great and their needs to be more shows representing positive black people just like the show girlfriends. I think this is pretty ridiculous…there are no longer any “black” shows on televison. I don’t mind mixed casts as I am very much a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and the like, however I think that majority black shows can hold their own just as well as any other show. The CW cut this show and brought back Melrose Place…seriously. Further, I see why ratings dropped when the show wasn’t advertised as are the other shows on the network and they were on better days. They should have left it on Sunday’s where it was the season before.

Are you serious. The Game is one of the most noteworthy shows out here to date. We can do without the reality shows and keep the meaningful ones on. There has not been a more entertaining series like this one since Martin. My friday nights revolve around “The Game”. I hope BET wise up and pick up the fourth season.

Yes, please please bring the GAME back!!!!!!!!!!!!! I Love the show. I find myself watching the reruns repeatly on Saturdays. Each of the guys make me laugh soo much. I love Derwin, Malik, and Jason. Don’t change any of the charatcters. I think the rating may have droped from previous seasons due to the night and time slot. I truly hope BET picks up the seris.
I love The Game and I dvr episodes that I miss. I remain hopeful that more episodes are coming soon but I am growing impatient. Come on BET, don’t live up to the hype that black people can’t do anything in good time. If a deal isn’t made soon you are going to miss out on a diamond mine and it will be your fault. If you want this program prove that you have what it takes to after it and get it.
I find it terribly disgusting that we can have shows representing all other aspects of negative African-American life but when a show with a great cast and great writing are available it is amazing that it gets cancelled. If the show is on in a better time slot and a better network…. Perhaps others would appreciate it as well. Gossip Girl, 90210 come on give me a break. Just like “Girlfriends” a great show is now gone! Bring it back!
i dont remember watching a show as interesting as THE GAME. Not to mention all the fine actors it has. Thats what makes a show very interesting, anyone can play the characters, but what makes it special is the people who play the characters, and who ever chose these actors made a great choice. All the actors in this show make me wanna watch the THE GAME over and over and over. Please dont take it off the air.
I love The Game and miss watching it each week. I was sad to see the series come to an end last season and would love to see where the characters would pick back up. I wouldn’t want different actors/actresses on the show; it just wouldn’t be the same. Please, BET, pick up the game and put a good sitcom with a majority African American cast back on the air!
