Last May, fans of The CW’s sitcom, The Game, were upset to learn that the sitcom had been cancelled after three seasons on the air. Though there was some resolution in the last episode, it was hardly satisfying enough for devoted viewers. The web has recently been abuzz with news that the show is coming back but can you believe it?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of the long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, and Barry Floyd.
Even before the show was cancelled by the CW, there was talk about the possibility of Black Entertainment Television (BET) picking up the show for a fourth year. The cable-channel has been playing the sitcom repeats and the show fits in with their other programming.
In July, Mowry told TV Guide, “[BET chairman and CEO] Debra Lee is trying everything and anything to make this happen. The Game gets higher ratings than BET’s original programming, and we’ve heard there would be a huge marketing campaign. So I personally believe the show would be taken to another level.”

Unfortunately, there’s been little word of any real progress since then. Last week, rumors started circulating that a deal had been struck between BET and the show’s studio, CBS Television. Unfortunately, they turned out to be false.
Last night, Mowry put the rumors to rest. Via her Twitter account, she wrote, “I am so sorry to tell you this, this whole THE GAME thing getting picked up is NOT true! After talking to agents lawyers etc it is not true.” A deal may still happen but, for the moment, there isn’t one.
When or if a new deal is made, it remains to be seen how it would work. The contracts for the cast and creatives have lapsed so new ones would have to be negotiated. Because BET has less money to spend, they’d likely have to take pay cuts.
On top of that, some of those involved with the show have also moved on to other projects and may not be available. Hall is working on CBS’ new sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, Mowry has several projects in the works, and Akil is part of ABC’s new Cougar Town comedy with Courteney Cox Arquette.
What do you think? Would a fourth season of The Game be worth watching if the budget had to be cut and not all of the principals were involved?
Everyone in my office has The Game on The Brain!!! Recently there have been marathons of the show coming on and for one whole weekend I could not move until I had seen all of the episodes. I was dissappointed to learn that this indeed was not a new show, but I was looking at old episodes; after the marathon I was left wanting more. When I got home from work last night, I was so excited to see 4 episodes I had not seen before, and I’m going home tonight hoping to catch the same thing. I know if… Read more »
I’m a “The Game” fan as well and wishing and praying that BET or anyone would pick up this Greater than Great show. I Love this show and would like for all of the characters to remain the same for they are truly what makes “The Game” the show. I, as others have mentioned, watch the reruns over and over again. This “is/was” the best shows ever. Please bring it back. WE are begging……………….you no!
I do love “The Game” I really do hope that BET picks up t his show. It is a great show and as veiwers can see many people love it as well. And I can’t say I watch any other show on BET as much as I watch The Game.
I love the show very much, and the actors are great at what they do. It gives you an insight on relationships with the players. I never seen a show with alot of drama and compassion for what they do in there lives. The show iss different than any other show that I watch, and I love TV. I hope that they will continue on with the show.
I love this show it needs to come back with the same cast……..Please I hardley watch tv anymore there is nothing else to talk about when it comes to tv watching
The Game needs to come back for forth season…. I am not one who writes on any blogs but I am writing because I feel that it’s the only show besides Entourage that’s worth watching. Love it and hope and look forward to watching forth season on whatever network !!!!

I and my entire family love The Game. We have watched every episode except for the very last episode. We laugh, we cry and we even say some of their sayings (like Tasha Mack). Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee dont take it off the air
yes a budget cut is worth making a forth season.. please please continue the show
I liked the game it is a shame that no one would put them up.
I WAS VERY UPSET THAT THE GAME WILL NOT COME BACK. THE WAY THEY ENDED IT WAS NOT RIGHT. YES MELONIE AND DERWIN GOT MARRIED BUT DO WE KNOW IF THE BABY IS HIS. HOW ABOUT IF JASON GETS BACK WITH KELLY. THEY JUST LEFT HER IN THE COURTROOM. I AM GLAD RICK FOX CAME BACK FOR TASHA BUT DOG, IT LEFT ME WANTING MORE. IF THEY NEED GOOD WRITERS, I WILL TAKE THE JOB.
AWWW I love the game I will so miss it
I love the show its so funny and refreshing. I find it hard to believe that ppl would rather have dumb reality shows on then good entertainment. This happened to the geroge lopez show a couple of years ago they pulled it to put the stuipd cave man show on that didn’t even last a season. Why mess with a good thing.
Ok I have been waitng for the return of The Game and I am very disappointed and saddened by the CW’s decision to drop the show. Ratings fell because it was placed on Fridays the busiest night for the younger demographic. I love The Game because of the genuwineness of the characters that were displayed on the show. I never understood why it didn’t get changed to an hour long anyway!!! This t.v. show had such a diverse cast for a change and the fluidity of the show was amazing!! The show was realistic with out being ghetto and portrayed… Read more »
It’s really no big surprise that the Game got cancelled. It’s how all our good sitcoms get treated. They build up a nice following then they move the day it shows, stop advertising and eventually get the plug pulled. Plz, these networks claims they are trying to be diverse by airing our shows then pull the plug to bring back garbage. Melrose, gosip girls, 90210, give me a break. I’d rather watch Archie Bunker…
