Last May, fans of The CW’s sitcom, The Game, were upset to learn that the sitcom had been cancelled after three seasons on the air. Though there was some resolution in the last episode, it was hardly satisfying enough for devoted viewers. The web has recently been abuzz with news that the show is coming back but can you believe it?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of the long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, and Barry Floyd.
Even before the show was cancelled by the CW, there was talk about the possibility of Black Entertainment Television (BET) picking up the show for a fourth year. The cable-channel has been playing the sitcom repeats and the show fits in with their other programming.
In July, Mowry told TV Guide, “[BET chairman and CEO] Debra Lee is trying everything and anything to make this happen. The Game gets higher ratings than BET’s original programming, and we’ve heard there would be a huge marketing campaign. So I personally believe the show would be taken to another level.”

Unfortunately, there’s been little word of any real progress since then. Last week, rumors started circulating that a deal had been struck between BET and the show’s studio, CBS Television. Unfortunately, they turned out to be false.
Last night, Mowry put the rumors to rest. Via her Twitter account, she wrote, “I am so sorry to tell you this, this whole THE GAME thing getting picked up is NOT true! After talking to agents lawyers etc it is not true.” A deal may still happen but, for the moment, there isn’t one.
When or if a new deal is made, it remains to be seen how it would work. The contracts for the cast and creatives have lapsed so new ones would have to be negotiated. Because BET has less money to spend, they’d likely have to take pay cuts.
On top of that, some of those involved with the show have also moved on to other projects and may not be available. Hall is working on CBS’ new sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, Mowry has several projects in the works, and Akil is part of ABC’s new Cougar Town comedy with Courteney Cox Arquette.
What do you think? Would a fourth season of The Game be worth watching if the budget had to be cut and not all of the principals were involved?
I love this show please bring it back!!!
I am dissappointed shows that contain black stars and revolve around some aspect of black life seem to be diminishing. It is discouraging and it leads me to ask many questions. The Game as well as Girlfriends was the buzz in my neighborhood. Theses sitcoms depicted hardworking, professional, dedicted african-americans. This showed America a different side of black life. I guess someone will pick the show up when we put more guns, hoes, and videos in them. That will show everyone the real side of black living…huh?
I have enjoyed watching the game from the very first season.. I hope there is a 4th season becuz I dnt feel it was truly finished, I feel like there’s still more to know… well ill be praying… with all the stupid shows they have out here, this show needs to make it..
yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss! were back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Game is a really good show. It is my favorite show on television. This show is too good to cancel. I am looking forward to seeing more of the show. Please don’t cancel it.
YES YES YES…. I love thTHE GAME TV Show and would love to have an 4th Season. I have been in some the the situations that were aired on the Show and we have an limited amount of Black TV Shows anyway. God Bless and I am looking forward TO WACTCHING.
I am a Senior citizen who only watched news on tv, but I just fell in love with “The Game”. It was so funny and so entertaining. I hope they bring it back!!
The CW Network is trippin by cancelling THE GAME that was the best show they ever came up with. They rather play them lame sitcom shows and stuff that’s not worth watching at all. I hope BET pick up the show for more than just the forth season. I know they will have much success with the show they should just have faith…
Please some1 save this show. This is the only show I am into. And with all this reality t.v lately, the game is the only real true show. Save it.
Please bring the game TV show back on.. i really think that was a dumb move to cance a great show. PPL like me finanly have a good show we can relate to. and u idiots go and cancel it. I am really thinking about starting a Save The Game Group! If you guys dont want to bring the game on then maybe we should stop watching CW or maybe we should stop buying the products on the commercials. B/c the commercial are big $$$$ for the network. so if ppl stop supporting the Network and commercial then maybe you… Read more »
I have watched this show from the beginning and its a postive show for everyone not just the African-American community. I unfortunately missed the end of season 3 and I have been trying to see it as they play the reruns. From what I’m told this show has far to go still. I think that if this show airs again it will still have fans watching. If BET does pick it up, I think it’ll be more of a success as it will lead to more loyal fans. Keep the cast and start season 4!!!!!
please do not but my name on there please…
the show has officially been saved; the fourth season will begin filming immediately in atlanta & the season starts early 2010
@niaaaa: Unfortunately it hasn’t been saved yet.
The game wouldn’t be the same without the same cast! all of the actors owe it to the fans to stay!! I love this show!! It’s so unique an different! and there aren’t any other shows like this! This show has everything comedy, drama, hott talented well known actors!! If BET continues to keep this show on the air, it will help them out alot!! They would get more viewers then ever before. Some people only watch BET for the tv show the game.
The Game was a wonderful show, I just hated the fact it had to be canceled. I can’t wait until it hits the DVD.
