Last May, fans of The CW’s sitcom, The Game, were upset to learn that the sitcom had been cancelled after three seasons on the air. Though there was some resolution in the last episode, it was hardly satisfying enough for devoted viewers. The web has recently been abuzz with news that the show is coming back but can you believe it?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of the long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, and Barry Floyd.
Even before the show was cancelled by the CW, there was talk about the possibility of Black Entertainment Television (BET) picking up the show for a fourth year. The cable-channel has been playing the sitcom repeats and the show fits in with their other programming.
In July, Mowry told TV Guide, “[BET chairman and CEO] Debra Lee is trying everything and anything to make this happen. The Game gets higher ratings than BET’s original programming, and we’ve heard there would be a huge marketing campaign. So I personally believe the show would be taken to another level.”

Unfortunately, there’s been little word of any real progress since then. Last week, rumors started circulating that a deal had been struck between BET and the show’s studio, CBS Television. Unfortunately, they turned out to be false.
Last night, Mowry put the rumors to rest. Via her Twitter account, she wrote, “I am so sorry to tell you this, this whole THE GAME thing getting picked up is NOT true! After talking to agents lawyers etc it is not true.” A deal may still happen but, for the moment, there isn’t one.
When or if a new deal is made, it remains to be seen how it would work. The contracts for the cast and creatives have lapsed so new ones would have to be negotiated. Because BET has less money to spend, they’d likely have to take pay cuts.
On top of that, some of those involved with the show have also moved on to other projects and may not be available. Hall is working on CBS’ new sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, Mowry has several projects in the works, and Akil is part of ABC’s new Cougar Town comedy with Courteney Cox Arquette.

I REALLY THINK THAT SUCKS, THAT WB/CW HAVE BOTH CANCELLED THE BEST TV SHOW THAT I SEEN SINCE THE COBSY SHOW. BOTH NETWORKS ARE SICK, THEY CANCELLED GIRLFRIEND AND NOW THE GAME WHICH ARE BOTH OUTSTANDING. I BELIEVE THINK THEY SHOULD RE-THINK THIS OVER AGAIN. HANDS UP TO BET FOR TRYING BRING THE 4TH SEASON ABOARD, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING THE OLD ONES.
I really love “the game”,its a good show. I think someone should make a 4th,5th,and 6th session..Everyone really loves this show. My whole family and co-workers thought a new session was coming and was all excited but i was only a rumor! come on BET lets pick this show up, it will be a huge success!!
It’s so funny because my 3 sisters an I started watching the game together an it actually made us closer. we keep waiting for the new shows an we just can’t get enough. I hop BET does pick it up it’s such a great show!
I l0ve The Game!!! We need more black shows on TV… Don’t get me wrong I love shows like th Gossips Girls but I would love to see more black people on TV…

Taylor what I meant and probably did not explain correctly it that although these shows exaggerate black life in some ways it also captures the part that is not often seen. Success, ambition, humbleness, religious sencerity. All the things that are not often seen associated with black people. Certainly, I understand that this show crosses cultural lines as far as the daily interpersonal interactions are concerned. this is the best show on tv! i feel connected to this show and the characters……
The more I watched this show the more I got into it. This show makes me laugh and cry, I can relate to a lot of the senarios and emotions the characters portray. I love this show it’s REAL and I hope BET picks it up. I was getting so into it!!!
This show is definitely worth bringing back. The writing is excellent and, once you take the time to get into the characters, you become completed invested. The problem was that the show never got the exposure it deserved. It was dismissed as just another African-American filler show. It is not that. Instead, it is a thoughtful, well-written show about young people trying to figure things out. MAN!!! I LOVE The Game the CW messed up when they aired it on Friday night. It took me awhile to realize it was still coming on. I ran a few stop signs in the past just to get home and catch the show so that I wouldn’t miss the first part please please please let a deal come through I LOVE the show and so do my friends. We call each other and talk about whats happening during commercials and right after the show. We use to do the same thing when Girlfriends were on the air!!! Bring both… Read more »
