Last May, fans of The CW’s sitcom, The Game, were upset to learn that the sitcom had been cancelled after three seasons on the air. Though there was some resolution in the last episode, it was hardly satisfying enough for devoted viewers. The web has recently been abuzz with news that the show is coming back but can you believe it?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of the long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, and Barry Floyd.
Even before the show was cancelled by the CW, there was talk about the possibility of Black Entertainment Television (BET) picking up the show for a fourth year. The cable-channel has been playing the sitcom repeats and the show fits in with their other programming.
In July, Mowry told TV Guide, “[BET chairman and CEO] Debra Lee is trying everything and anything to make this happen. The Game gets higher ratings than BET’s original programming, and we’ve heard there would be a huge marketing campaign. So I personally believe the show would be taken to another level.”

Unfortunately, there’s been little word of any real progress since then. Last week, rumors started circulating that a deal had been struck between BET and the show’s studio, CBS Television. Unfortunately, they turned out to be false.
Last night, Mowry put the rumors to rest. Via her Twitter account, she wrote, “I am so sorry to tell you this, this whole THE GAME thing getting picked up is NOT true! After talking to agents lawyers etc it is not true.” A deal may still happen but, for the moment, there isn’t one.
When or if a new deal is made, it remains to be seen how it would work. The contracts for the cast and creatives have lapsed so new ones would have to be negotiated. Because BET has less money to spend, they’d likely have to take pay cuts.
On top of that, some of those involved with the show have also moved on to other projects and may not be available. Hall is working on CBS’ new sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, Mowry has several projects in the works, and Akil is part of ABC’s new Cougar Town comedy with Courteney Cox Arquette.
What do you think? Would a fourth season of The Game be worth watching if the budget had to be cut and not all of the principals were involved?
I love The Game!!! I loved watching the love romances between the characters- I feel cheated as a viewer- need a conclusion to their lives!!! Please bring it back (better than many of the shows out there).
I would love to see the game come back only if all the cast members return.
i love this show. So much better than watching those dang reality shows please dont take it off the air.
I love the show
the game was one of the best sitcoms I ever watched. I never could really get into girlfriends but there show was cancelled and brought back plenty of times, why not do the same thing for the game. Maybe if they can keep there current fans and gain new ones, the fifth season could probably bring in more money.
BRING BACK THE GAME!!!!
It is a great show and I’m always watching the mini marathons on BET..
They won’t regret it if they bring it back!
i love Med school!
This show was the best an i watch alot of tv lol bring it back i want jason n’kelly to get back together hehe i love the GAME!!!! Alot of girls go through those crazy but real situations love it!
I DO NOT watch television, but i saw ONE episode and was HOOKED!!!!! It was the BEST SHOW ON T.V!!!!!!!!! “Darwin, I am gonna miss you.”
The CW and every other major network is always cancelling a show if it’s not catering to the majority.(which we already know what that is)BET needs to bring this show back.It gave you every emotion from fear, hope, love, sadness. You just don’t have shows like that anymore and everyone could relate from one point to another. Instead of showing that ghetto trash (yes I said “ghetto”)with Lil Waynes baby’s momma and TI’s baby’s momma and not to mention Keyshia Cole’s dysfunctional and disgusting family. Show something that has values and can make us really feel like we know these characters and can relate.… Read more »
I loved the Game, it was my favorite show, in fact I thought is was way better than Girlfriends (which hasn’t been the same since Tony left). If they have to suffer budget cuts than BET just can’t afford to have the show on the air in the first place. The Game was too good a show to accept anything less than what they were already making, that is an insult. Perhaps if the CW wasn’t racially motivated then the Game could have lasted. Check out the CW’s fall line up….Most of their shows are predominantly Caucasians, not that there’s… Read more »
The Game was a great show!!! I saw one episode and I was hooked. Unlike many other tv shows on the air right now, this one touches on real life situations more than any other show. Dealing with cheating spouses, feeling insecurities in your relationships, trying to make a marriage work with real life problems, etc. It doesn’t sugarcoat anything and every situation didn’t have a happy ending…just like in real life. I am so dissappointed to hear that it’s been cancelled.
THE GAME IS ONE OF THE FEW SHOWS THAT I WATCH OVER AND OVER. WHY DOES BET HAVE DEGRADING SHOWS ON SUCH AS TINEY AND TOYA ,THE RIDICULOUS FRANKIE AND NEFFIE AND COLLEGE STUDENT SHOWING THE WORST BEHAVIOR FOR SO CALLED EDUCATED STUDENTS? TAKE THESE SHOWS OFF AND SAVE ”THE GAME”.
I am hoping they will continue to show The Game ! I have truly enjoyed the show. I really don’t understand why they cancell shows when they are doing so well and the viewers like me really enjoy them. They should asks the viewers what they think before cancelling it would make a difference!!!
i LOVE the game. my mother,my lil brother and my whole family enjoy watching it ,it has real life events and give you a overlook on whats going on in the football field i LOVE it please keep it around.
The Game is a show that trully captivates the audience’s attention and it is plain cruel to cancel it. I personally believe that with so much potential, the cast should be given an opportunity to continue to grow. This show is very realistic and funny, many viewers have made it clear that they enjoy watching this show and are devestated that it is over. It is unfair to take this show off the air because in the end, shouldn’t tv be for the audience?
