Last May, fans of The CW’s sitcom, The Game, were upset to learn that the sitcom had been cancelled after three seasons on the air. Though there was some resolution in the last episode, it was hardly satisfying enough for devoted viewers. The web has recently been abuzz with news that the show is coming back but can you believe it?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of the long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, and Barry Floyd.
Even before the show was cancelled by the CW, there was talk about the possibility of Black Entertainment Television (BET) picking up the show for a fourth year. The cable-channel has been playing the sitcom repeats and the show fits in with their other programming.
In July, Mowry told TV Guide, “[BET chairman and CEO] Debra Lee is trying everything and anything to make this happen. The Game gets higher ratings than BET’s original programming, and we’ve heard there would be a huge marketing campaign. So I personally believe the show would be taken to another level.”

Unfortunately, there’s been little word of any real progress since then. Last week, rumors started circulating that a deal had been struck between BET and the show’s studio, CBS Television. Unfortunately, they turned out to be false.
Last night, Mowry put the rumors to rest. Via her Twitter account, she wrote, “I am so sorry to tell you this, this whole THE GAME thing getting picked up is NOT true! After talking to agents lawyers etc it is not true.” A deal may still happen but, for the moment, there isn’t one.
When or if a new deal is made, it remains to be seen how it would work. The contracts for the cast and creatives have lapsed so new ones would have to be negotiated. Because BET has less money to spend, they’d likely have to take pay cuts.
On top of that, some of those involved with the show have also moved on to other projects and may not be available. Hall is working on CBS’ new sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, Mowry has several projects in the works, and Akil is part of ABC’s new Cougar Town comedy with Courteney Cox Arquette.

First off i wanna say I absoutly love LOVE the game!!!! .. I really do cry and laugh alot, i really do get into that show it drives me crazy where it last endin, mainly because of Kelly she was left with such a heartbreak,and what derwin was sayin about love in the last eposide that killed me I was crying my eyes out. I loved this show. I was immediately hooked and that breaks my heart to find out they don’t have the sense to continue it. When you see some of the other things that they do save, its heart breaking… Best of Luck to the Cast.. and I guess I’m just grateful for the great entertainment I did get! Thanks..
i am so hurt that they stopped the show. i dont like to watch any shows other than ones that come on lifetime but when i saw the game for the first time i was in love with it. melanie and derwin are exactly like me and my partner and i related to them so much and it gave me hope on my on again and off again relationship and the pitts are just like my sister and her husband its a show that i can and many people can relate to and it is just so devastating that they… Read more »
I think it is very sad that a show, which has so many positive successful black men and women on it would be cancelled. That being said if the network has to eliminate characters and story lines because of the budget cuts the show would not be worth watching anyway.
The Game is a great show because it has the perfect blend of comedy and drama. It is the main reason why I watch BET. I just saw the Mo’nique show to find out and they completely skipped out on the question (asked during previews)……. “Is the game coming back?” I hope BET does pick up the show………with the same cast of course.
It would be nice to have the Game to retun with new shows, but do cut no one out. if the do not come i think you for what you gave us. i hope yout can bring the game back on. Thanks, Kaylynnejay
Oh, man do u understand how real this show was. All of the characters had a story to tell and that is real. How could this happen in a day and age when all the channels are playing reality shows I was happy that we finally had two good shows to watch. Girlfriends and The Game, but somehow just like the matrix they are both gone. It would surprise me if one African American show stayed on the air other than BET. I really agree wit the person on top.the show reflexed me in so many ways it thought me how I should manage a relationship and other sistuation in life. For the game to b off air BET wouldn’t be the same I think u should really think about it and make a season 4….STRIGHT….
I honestly do not commit myself to watching televsion shows religiously, but after I watched the game the first time I was hooked. I will sit there and watch all the re-runs over and over again. It truly is a show that is filled with things people can relate to. It truly does make me laugh, cry, and ticked off at the same time. There aren’t too many “good” sitcoms out there now. The Game was and still is a good watch. I never truly understood how networks decide when to discontinue televison series. Akil, is a very good writer. I enjoyed both Girlfriends and The Game. I hope that the BET network can find the money to continue this show. However, it would’nt be the same if Akil and the original cast did not return.
i lave the game it can’t just end like i need to see what is going to happen the to me is like the young and the restless . i hope they came back for good. i need to know what happened after they got married and after the baby was born hurry back..

I absolutely love the show!!! It is the only black show with real issues that isn’t a reality show!! I can relate to every character or know someone who can! The show is awesome! If BET stop paying for all these reality shows that are about people that ain’t even famous or have anything productive to talk about(Frankie and Neffe …yeah they could have kept that show, Tiny and Toya…why do we care about these two??) they can pay the cast for the game and keep it on!!! It should of never been cancelled!!! Lets get it back on BET!!!!
