While it’s looking less and less likely that the CW will renew The Game sitcom for a fourth year, series creator Mara Brock Akil is apparently interesting in changing the show in order to score a renewal. Is it a winning strategy?
The Game is a spin-off of the Girlfriends, the once successful sitcom that ended abruptly last season. Premiering in 2006, The Game revolves around Melanie Barnett (Tia Mowry), a first year medical student who gives up her school plans to follow her professional football playing boyfriend Derwin Davis (Pooch Hall). Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Hosea Chanchez and Wendy Raquel Robinson.
In its first season, The Game averaged 2.3 million viewers each week. For season two, the ratings dropped to 2.07 million and a .96 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This season, CW execs have stranded the series in a little-watched Friday night timeslot. It’s fallen to an average of 1.68 million viewers and a tiny 0.7 rating in the demo.
Along with fellow sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, The Game hasn’t exactly been a ratings powerhouse. It looks very likely that Chris will be cancelled in May but will have 88 episodes, enough for a syndication run that’s scheduled to start on Nick at Nite this Fall. In contrast, The Game will only have 64 episodes.
A renewal for The Game would create a programming conundrum for the CW. With no other half-hour programs in development, they’d have an orphan half-hour in their timeslot to fill.

The Hollywood Reporter says that one possible solution would be to turn The Game into an hour-long dramedy. The change wouldn’t be a big stretch since the sitcom doesn’t use a studio audience and already mixes comedy with drama. Akil is expected to pitch the idea to the network sometime this week.
The plan is considered a longshot at best considering The Game’s weak ratings and the fact that it doesn’t mesh well with the network’s upcoming slate of dramas. Switching time formats could also cause a problem in syndication, unless each of the hour episodes could be cut into two 30 minute installments.
If the CW network ultimately passes on renewing The Game, the show could still continue. In February, the BET cable channel signed a syndication deal to air the first three seasons. At the time, Barbara Zaneri, BET’s Executive VP of Acquisitions, told Variety, “This [show] is something I went after the minute I got to BET. Not only does it have really fresh African-American stars, but it has a great lineup of guest stars. People like Robin Givens and Vivica Fox — these are people who are regularly on our network.”
It’s been reported (and Mowry recently confirmed) that BET execs have discussed with CBS the possibility of funding a fourth year. The deal would likely entail some cost-cutting to make the deal affordable for the cable channel but it’s in CBS’ best interests to make it work.
Will the show get some “extra innings” or is The Game over? We’ll likely have to wait until May 21st to find out for sure.

It would be absolutly rediculous for them to cancel the gam. I mean it is bad enough that it comes on friday nights. Knowing that this is the night that most of its young viewers like myself are out to happy hour, getting ready to go out for the weekend or just chilling out; dugh its the egining of the weekend. I feel terrible when I miss the show due to weekened obligations(or shall I say socializing) however I always catch up on the website. DONT CANCELL THE SHOW. IT IS THE ONLY THING GOOD ON TV NOW ADMIST ALL… Read more »
I love this show. This is my favorite show on TV right now. They cancelled Veronica Mars what more do they want. If they cancel The Game it is no reason for me to watch CW anymore. CW is looking a little racist to me. I mean every show on CW has a has a all white cast but The Game and Everybody Hates Chris. Oh lets not forget 90210 with the one black boy. They need to consider cancelling the other shows on the network and leave The Game alone.
This show cant be canceled!!!! I’ve been loving this show from the first season…if yall cancel it the viewers would be left curious about what would happen next…I would also love The Game to be on BET…I love this show and Derwin is SEXY!!!!
KEEP THE SHOW…IT IS WONDERFUL
Either way it is unwanted on the network it is currently on. They have no respect for the show and I wish Mara Brock Akil can get her own network that continues to do shows like this in a positive light. The Game is one of the best shows since the Cosby Show and A Different World and we need to see more of the same by a network that respects the work of such a talented writer.
This is crazy!!!! The Game is the best sitcom on TV right now. The characters are all great actors. I also plan my Fridays around the show (any true fan would). Yes I would love it if the show became a hour long drama, but no matter how long it is or isn’t it’s a great show. If the CW decides to cancel the show I hope BET or TBS picks it up and kill them in the ratings. You see they cancelled the Tyler Perry show and TBS picked it up and it’s the #1 show on cable. They… Read more »
So sad that others show get time to fail rather they have good ratings or not ie “Reaper” “Aliens in America” and “One Tree Hill”. It seems that when its ‘us” they tend to want to cancel it. Must folks arent home to watch TV on a Friday night anyway so they sould move it back to Sunday or Thursday. Whatever you do do not cancel another show featuring us. We will have none left!!!!
Keep The Game and bring back Girlfriends to fill the other half hour!!!
I watch the Game faithfully every Friday’s at 8:30 and the repeats on Bet but I figured that when the show was moved to fridays when most of viewers are beginning there party plans I knew soon it would be off the air. The game is a great show but most black series do not stay on the air long.
This always happens! Friday is NOT a good time slot. Please put this show & “Everybody Hates Chris” back on Mondays or Thursdays where it was. The ratings were good then. You can also give us the closure finale for “Girlfriends”. Must we have two more shows leaving us hangin’?
While I’m on a roll, Arsenio Hall’s show is disappointingly unfunny. He should return to late night talk/host show–which is/was his best work–especially since Jay Leno will be on @ 10pm. Arsenio could beat Letterman & Kimmel with his eyes closed! “Woof, woof, woof, woof,…”
please dont cancel the show…i fell in love with the plot and the characters..the writer is brillant
It me again Leandrea I really need yall to move your time to 8:30 please because my boyfriend like to watch his wwe westler on the same time yall is but it come on at 7:00-8:00pm and yall come on 7:30 and me&my boyfriend can’t not watch t.v at the same time as the wwe westler come on . I love yall please do that for me
Thank you
This has been my all time favorite sitcom since season 1. However, it seems that has of recent the episodes aren’t has clever or funny. I did some research and it looks like there has been new writers for the last 2 episodes. Please bring back the original writers so the show can go back to being as hilarious and clever as it once was. Also I definitely can’t wait for season 4. I hope there will be a new love interest for Tasha. I loved when she was with Rick Fox, you could tell that he really loved her… Read more »

I love this show. Please find a way to keep this on the air. It would be extremely great if the show is revamped for one hour. This would give me a whole hour to be entertained by Melanie, Tasha Mack, Kelly, Derwin and the rest of the gang. PLEASE FIND A WAY TO SAVE THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!
