Though ABC didn’t have much luck with their Eastwick drama, the network is trying another kind of supernatural series, The Gates, for the summer months. Will this one make it to season two?
The Gates revolves around a big city cop who moves his family to a quiet gated community where many of the residents aren’t exactly what they appear to be. The ensemble cast includes Rhona Mitra, Colton Haynes, Frank Grillo, Janina Gavankar, Chandra West, Luke Mably, James Preston, Marisol Nichols, Skyler Samuels, Travis Caldwell, Victoria Platt, and Justin Miles.
The series debuted on Sunday, June 20th, to an unimpressive 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.78 million viewers. Considering all of the network’s promotion, this was a disappointing start. The premiere ranked first in the demo and second in total viewers for the timeslot.

In week two, viewership for The Gates dropped by about 30%. The demo fell to a 1.1 rating and total viewership came down to only 3.24 million. That put the show in second place in the demo and in third place for viewers.
Though ABC has lower expectations for this summer show, the ratings do not bode well for the show’s future on the network. Unless more people start watching, it’s hard to imagine that we’ll be seeing season two.
For now, let’s hope they show all 13 episodes of season one. The Gates is expected to run until September 19th but, with ratings like these, it’s not hard to imagine the network replacing them with something else.
What do you think? Is The Gates worth watching or would you just cancel it already? (Want to know how Scoundrels is doing? Go here.)

Unfortunately, when Hollywood sees something that becomes as successful as Twilight, they overdo it, trying to pump out one thing after another just like it, and oversaturate the market. Then what happens – people get sick of the genre quickly and don’t give any show or movie in that genre a chance, even if it’s any good. I’m a huge vampire/paranormal fan, and this show is really great for people like me. I think this may be a problem with ABC picking shows like this though, when really, I don’t think this is the right network for it. It was… Read more »
I like this show ! I hope it stays on ! The whole wolves, witches, and vampire thing is interesting!
I love it! I’m hooked! Why does if only have to fit one night?? Example..there is not one show worth watching on a Wednesday night…..I buy movies to watch on Wednesdays. Also, too many reality shows you have to skip over to find a decent show, drop some of those and keep The Gates!
I ACTUALLY LOVE THIS SHOW. I DONT THINK THERE IS A SHOW LIKE THIS OUT THERE. THE CAST IS BEAUTIFUL, THERE ARE TONS OF INTERESTING TWIST ..I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT….PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL!!! I DONT KNOW HOW THEY DETERMINE WHO WATCH THIS SHOW OR NOT, I WATCH IT ONLINE, DOES IT COUNT. MY TV IS BROKEN RIGHT NOW 🙁
ABC is the king of spending big bucks on sedate programming in prime time during the summer to fill their schedule… look what happened to Defying Gravity and Eastwick. Shows like these need to be started in January on a Wednesday to get people who are not trudging through the frozen tundra at night to watch. But no, ABC has got some kind of blind fold wearing through the darts over your shoulder mantra going on when it comes to scheduling because it wants to protect its precious football revenue. While I do enjoy watching this show, I fully expect… Read more »
What an unbelievably derivative series. Really, ABC, another vampire show? Really?? The nets need to take a chance, stop insulting our intelligence, and put something INNOVATIVE on the air. Get our attention, stop phoning it in, and please stop degrading your brand with nonsense like this.
My wife and I watched it and we can use one word to describe it…………..boooooooooring!
I’m tired of networks telling me what stays & what gets cancelled. It frustrates me. And it makes them look lazy… Like they didn’t put any forethought into the show. Maybe the network’s expectations concerning ratings are unrealistic?
I’m with Victoria! Happy Town was unique and funky. And had no stupid vampires. Enough with the trying to be Buffy. Let’s think of something new. Bring back Happy Town!
Do you think there are enough Vampire shows and movies yet. I do. Loosing this one won’t really be a loss. Toss it.
Cancel this and bring back Happy Town.
OH Yes I loved Happy Town, just when i got right into it they canceled it!
Where is episode 3 and on? Let’s get with this summer series. There is nothing else to watch.
So MANY good shows got canceled or seem to be getting canceled these days. I swear by the time you get comfortable with a show or even in some cases HEAR of it the network takes it down. Give some room and time development!
so tired of the vampire shows! that movie twlight is lame too! enough with it already!!
Yeah but I am tired of all the Hospital and Cop shows , how many of THEM are there?
They’re running some commercials saying “one of the best new shows this summer” or something; then again, just because the show is good, doesn’t mean it has to have followers.
We’ll see, I guess. So many vampire and supernatural shows out there, it’s not really anything special.
