Though ABC didn’t have much luck with their Eastwick drama, the network is trying another kind of supernatural series, The Gates, for the summer months. Will this one make it to season two?
The Gates revolves around a big city cop who moves his family to a quiet gated community where many of the residents aren’t exactly what they appear to be. The ensemble cast includes Rhona Mitra, Colton Haynes, Frank Grillo, Janina Gavankar, Chandra West, Luke Mably, James Preston, Marisol Nichols, Skyler Samuels, Travis Caldwell, Victoria Platt, and Justin Miles.
The series debuted on Sunday, June 20th, to an unimpressive 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.78 million viewers. Considering all of the network’s promotion, this was a disappointing start. The premiere ranked first in the demo and second in total viewers for the timeslot.

In week two, viewership for The Gates dropped by about 30%. The demo fell to a 1.1 rating and total viewership came down to only 3.24 million. That put the show in second place in the demo and in third place for viewers.
Though ABC has lower expectations for this summer show, the ratings do not bode well for the show’s future on the network. Unless more people start watching, it’s hard to imagine that we’ll be seeing season two.
For now, let’s hope they show all 13 episodes of season one. The Gates is expected to run until September 19th but, with ratings like these, it’s not hard to imagine the network replacing them with something else.
What do you think? Is The Gates worth watching or would you just cancel it already? (Want to know how Scoundrels is doing? Go here.)

KEEP THE GATES!!!!
Come on!!! this show is getting better and better with each episode. People should give a chance. It has an interesting plot and its awesome what it is happening. Give it a try
Networks should know by now that not all lasting shows start out of the gate, no punn intended, quickly. Some are slower than others as long as they have momentum in the story telling, it should be given a chance. Doesn’t ABC have enough work to keep them busy. Give the summer a chance, let “The Gates” continue to the end of the season and see where it goes. Hope the writers are reading these reviews and bump up the storylines. They have introduced alot of characters and stories. Now give some meat to the stew and surprise everyone with… Read more »
I Love This Show!!! ABC needs to give it a chance. They seem to let all the good ones go!
Since ABC cancelled Happy Town…I am sure that this show won’t last long until ABC pulls the plug on The Gates. I wouldn’t call The Gates the best show on TV but it keeps my interest
Keep the show. Got to give it a chance. And if they do cancel the show, PLS bring closure to it. Don’t leave us hanging with no future of a 2nd season!
keep keep keeep keeeeeeep The Gates
the gates is getting better as it progresses. ABC, please DO NOT take this show off the air as you did with “happy town”, and leave us dangling and once again disappointed. 2-4 million viewers a week in the summertime (or anytime…”true blood” rings in with 3 million viewers) is alot of people. please remember “seinfeld” had low ratings at first and then grew into 1 of the highest rated comedies of all time( on nbc , i think) so please , give rhona mitra and the rest of the cast of “the gates” a chance
It’s hard to imagine such a vampire show like this. I say cancel the Gates and replace it with another crime show.
There are too many normal crime shows out there. If you want another crime show, just go back to Law and Order or CSI.
Give The Gates a chance!
The first few episodes were pretty bad – pilot being the worst. I probably would have stopped watching if I hadn’t already set my TiVO.
It’s starting to hit its stride though, I think I’d like them to see the season out. There is some potential here, though it’s a guilty pleasure sort of thing. I like that there are werewolves, witches, vampires (and some other things I’ll spare you for spoilers) trying to co-habitate. We haven’t even gotten into the politics of it all. Again, the show has potential.
Well the pilot episode was actually pretty intriguing. After that, there wasn’t much focus or suspense that kept the show going forward. I think they have tried to do too much differing sci-fi too quickly. Vampires, werewolves, succubus, mystifying characters all introduced too soon. Honestly, I think they should have stayed close to the vampire plots, and very slowly introduced the other aspects as we were being reeled into the show. As weird as it is to say, it’s just not believable like other vampire shows on tv nowadays. No I don’t think vampires are real, but shows like True… Read more »
The Gates – This is a great show to me so far. I like supernatural / crime dramas. Ok, let’s imagine for a minute. Jack Bauer (24) retires from CTU, raises a family & get’s a job as police chief of a huge high-tech Desperate Housewives (seemingly perfect apple pie sharing neighbors) gated community. The community consists of humans and non-humans from Supernatural & True Blood. And the teens attend Mystic Falls High School (from The Vampire Diaries). The old police chief is found with a bullet in his head. Mysterious things are also happening, so Jack Bauer is on… Read more »
KEEP THE GATES.
Even though I said no more ABC, I am checking out the first episode now and it seems pretty good but I bet they are not getting watch because ABC can’t give anything a chance.
I noticed many of you on here think this show is mainly about vampires, that’s wrong. Granted, ABC started off with the teaser trailers of Rhona Mitra’s character (who is a vampire) biting a man. The show also was called a mix between Desperate Housewives and True Blood by the critics. Anyways, The Gates is more than a vampire show. In just the first episode we see werewolves, witches, and of course vampires. Other vampire related shows like True Blood went for almost their entire first season before introducing another supernatural being. The Vampire Diaries has yet to introduce something… Read more »
I tuned into this because I really liked Marisol Nichols in “Blind Justice” and “In Justice”, good shows (both also ABC, I believe) which didn’t last long. I gave it two weeks, but in the end none of the plot lines grabbed my interest and I found the whole thing dull beyond endurance. My vote is to cancel it in the hope that she gets recast in something watchable.
