It may be hard to believe but The Good Wife is one of CBS’ weakest shows when it comes to the 18-49 demographic. Despite having devoted fans and the love of critics, the series averages a 2.2 rating in the all-important demo category. With the exception of the Friday night line-up, The Good Wife is the lowest-rated scripted series still on the network.
Not to worry though, its looking like a sure thing that The Good Wife will be back for a third season. CBS hasn’t announced it yet but the Julianna Margulies drama will be on the schedule for 2011-12.
Alan Cumming recently signed a new deal that locks him in as a series regular for seasons three, four, and five. Though this is no guarantee that the series will go on that long, CBS wouldn’t bother to make a new long-term deal with him if they weren’t going to renew the show for next season.
In addition, Josh Charles just told AOL TV that he and others in the cast are going to attend CBS’ advertiser upfronts session next week in New York. As the actor notes, “I’m imagining they’re not inviting us to tell us we’re not picked up, you know?”
The CBS upfronts will be held next week, the afternoon of May 18th. You can bookmark our CBS cancel/renew list to keep up.
What do you think? Do you want The Good Wife to return next season? Would you like to see anything change? Why do you think it’s not getting better ratings?

“The Good Wife” is the only network show that I view including commercials. It is well written, well acted and full of interesting plot twists. My phone is off, children put to bed and my full attention is focused on this sophisticated drama. CBS, I am in the desired demographic…so please, please let the pick up for season 3 be true. We need more thought provoking television as opposed to mindless programming rot.
Well said Jean
I don’t think of it being to techy as I do the fact that it is up against another show that has a lot of followers, is why I DVR the other. I found out last wkend. My Mother-in-law watches it, it really surprised me but I am happy. I am very happy the show is being renewed, I LOVE THE GOOD WIFE… As for changing up the story line, it is time to make the Alicia & Will storyline come alive “FINALLY”. As for Peter, well he needs a real reality check. As far as anyone thinking he has… Read more »
Lynx above, ditto,ditto,ditto!!
I’m not in the 18-49 demographic (older) I enjoy this show and look forward to it every week. What is it……older than 49 doesn’t count. We watch TV too!
It would be nice if it did get renewed. It can be very confusing sometimes and I have no idea where they are planning to go with it, but I think that it would be nice to find out.
I am so pleased that it looks good for the Good Wife. I thinking the writing and acting are top notch.
I love this show! I am so pleased it is not going to be canceled. I am not sure why more people do not watch it. I think most people do not like to “think” they want instant gratification, this show is about character development, the law, morals, values, things most people do not want to think about. Maybe it needs a bit more romance and more about the relationships between the characters and less in the court room scenes. Love it I find the show smart and sophisticated. I love Julianna, and I cannot imagine for a minute that… Read more »
Nooooooo! Don’t renew The Good Wife!
I want to spank, oops, I mean see “The Bad Wife”.
This is one of the best shows on TV! I absolutely love this show and I am actually surprised that the numbers aren’t up higher. Glad there will be another season !!!
I am thrilled that it seems like The Good Wife isn’t going to be canceled. It’s a very good show and most of the good shows are being canceled.
I am not a lawyer, and I have never been to law school. Cheryl D. – many fans of the show have never been to law school. The show is NOT that complicated. My 78 year-old mother-in-law can follow the show just fine, and she has a high-school diploma. This is a must watch for me, for my husband, and for my mom. I am in the 18-49 demographic. I find the show smart and sophisticated. I love Julianna, and I cannot imagine for a minute that CBS would allow this show to end. Considering the crap they try to… Read more »
I completely agree with you Mary Ann. I am not a lawyer either; imagine that…I can understand the premise of the show and not get lost…..geez! I have not missed an episode since it began thanks to my DVR. I too am in the 18 -49 demographic and agree the show is smart, sophisticated and so well written.
I am so pleased that The Good Wife is looking good for season 3. I think the reason behind not more people watching the series, is because it gets too technical. Being a law student, I totally understand what they are portraying, however, the average Joe, will not understand, and I think they get frustrated so they quite watching. You have to speak down to the regular crowd, not the lawyers in this country. Also, I would like to see more romance for next year. That would go a long way to see more of that. Everybody loves a good… Read more »
The Good Wife is the only show on my current must-watch list that hasn’t been renewed or isn’t ending its run. I’m glad it’s pretty much a lock for at least another season. I don’t think the ratings will improve, however. I’ll enjoy its genius for as long as CBS sees fit to air it. Can’t wait to see which shows get picked up next week (or THIS week the way things are going). Fingers crossed for any of the following: Prime Suspect, REM, Poe, Once Upon a Time, The River, Revenge, Suburgatory, Person of Interest or The Rememberer.
Not a bad show.
Well at leats a little good news in the TV world today. Mostly bad today.
I have watched from the start and will certainly watch next season. I love this show THE ACTORS ARE TERRIFIC. PLEASE BRING IT BACK.
