Last night, The L Word finished its six year run on Showtime. It was announced 12 months ago that the series was coming to an end so many viewers were expecting the series finale to be well-crafted and satisfying. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be what they got.
The L Word revolves around the loves and lives of a group of gay, bisexual, and transgender friends who live in Southern California. Over the years, the series has featured a large ensemble cast that includes Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey, Laurel Holloman, Mia Kirshner, Katherine Moennig, Pam Grier, Rachel Shelley, Daniela Sea, Erin Daniels, Marlee Matlin, Rose Rollins, Sarah Shahi, Dallas Roberts, Preston Cook, Lauren Lee Smith, Jon Wolfe Nelson, and Cybill Shepherd.
Debuting on January 18, 2004, L Word proved very successful for the pay-per-view channel. In 2007, Robert Greenblatt, Showtime’s President of Entertainment, called it “a signature franchise for us and one of our most popular series.” The final season was announced in March 2008 and, unlike previous seasons, only eight installments were ordered, bringing the series total to 70 episodes.
The sixth season began with the death of Jenny Schecter (Kirshner), one of the series’ central characters. After a short introduction, the story shifts to three months prior and moves forward in time from there. As the episodes progress, several people become upset with Jenny and appear to be possible suspects in her murder.

Showtime promoted that the murder mystery would be resolved by the end of the series finale. Unfortunately, viewers weren’t given an answer. What we do know is that apparently Jenny fell through a missing railing on Bette and Tina’s stairwell. Was it a simple accident, a suicide, or a murder? We may never know. There were no alternate scenes or endings filmed.
Frustrating as this ending is, it doesn’t come as a total surprise. In January, after the episode had already completed, series creator Ilene Chaiken told the LA Times, “There are ways I could still answer [the mystery] if the need were to arise. But I don’t actually feel compelled to answer it. The show is about character and relationships, and I used this story to deeply explore those relationships. It’s a risk not to solve a mystery, admittedly.”
The open-ended mystery may be part of a bigger plan. A pilot has been shot for a spin-off series called The Farm. It stars Leisha Hailey as Alice and takes place in a women’s penitentiary. It would seem that Alice has been charged and convicted of Jenny’s murder. But, did she really do the deed?
According to EW, Chaiken created the murder-mystery storyline before the spin-off was conceived. She said, “If the new show goes on the air, it will be connected to the Who-Killed-Jenny? storyline, and I would say that that’s what Alice is in prison for. I don’t know that she actually killed Jenny…”
What we do know is that actresses Melissa Leo, Laurie Metcalf, and Famke Janssen all filmed roles for the potential series. Leo and Metcalf play prison officials, while Janssen plays a fellow prisoner. There’s no word if any or all of them would be series regulars if The Farm goes forward as a series.
Showtime has yet to decide if the spin-off will get a greenlight. If the spin-off series does get made, hopefully Chaiken will come to her senses and reveal who or what caused the death of Jenny Schecter before it ends.

I beleive that Jenny fell off the banaster and was an accident. Think about how many time that Bet and Tina stated that the banaster wasnt finished and then they never showed the banaster at the end come on fans. No one killed Jenny….. I know that it stinks that the show ended and they made Shane really a stupid person in this season. But i love Shane in her new role in Three Rivers……
WOW I HAVE YET TO SEE THE 6 SEASON….BUT I AM ALREADY DISAPPOINTED, IN THE 5TH SEASON MOLLY AND SHANE BROKE HER HEART (JENNYS)…HER SO CALLED ASS ADALE, JUST TREATED HER AWFUL!!! THATS THE MOST HATED FROM ME! NOW IN THE SIXTH SEASON YOU KILL HER OFF. WHO WRITES THIS STUFF. THEN YOU DONT TELL US WHY JENNY’S DEAD. I have been a die-hard fan of the L-word. I was so excited for the 6th season to come out and when it did I payed 60 bucks just to get it one day early. ANYWAY, what the hell! I am petrified by the nerve that these mother fu*king writers have; just to leave devoted fans hanging with no ending. What?, now I have to watch a whole other series (the Farm)just to find out how stable Bette and Tina’s railing is? BULLSH*T I’m so upset, I waited SIX years for this and I get NO ending. What happened to… Read more »

i watched 6 seasons of the l word in one month. My life revolved around the show i was so disappointed of the ending. i don’t know what to do with my spare time any more, i need more, i crave it now.
Hi, I have yet to see season 6 and I hope it’s not that disappointing. But even if I’m left a little wanting, I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in the show, it was bloody fantastic, not just because it was a Iesbian show and the actresses were super hot!, but because it made me laugh and it made me cry, the story lines and the acting were amazing. I don’t think we should boycott the spin off ( if they make one) we should support it, then hopefully The L word and The Farm… Read more »
Hi! I am from the Philippines, and my girlfriend (of 17 years) and myself have been watching L Word which we ADORE so much. Actually we missed the last episode in Season 6 where Jenny was killed, but we’ll definitely get ourselves a copy of all the seasons and don’t mind a bit to watch it all over again. WE LOVE THE SERIES SO MUCH and we were really hoping that it won’t end this soon (=,o)
I didnt like the whole last season. It was like they had already decided to kill of Jenny so they needed to figure out a way for that to happen like it was an afterthought. I dont think the writers of the show did a good job of making the story seamless. The whole season was running up to the death of Jenny and the writers took short cuts to get to the conclusion of the first episode. It just seemed like a story written by a little kid where they want something to happen so they make it happen… Read more »
I DON’T WANT TO VOTE! I NEED TO KNOW! WHO KILLED JENNY? WHAT THE HELL? I MEAN SERIOUSLY…IF I WANTED TO PUT THINGS TOGETHER FOR MYSELF, I WOULD BE DOING MY HOMEWORK (FOR MY 21 CREDIT HOURS!) INSTEAD OF WATCHING THIS SHOW RELIGIOUSLY!!! I’D JUST “USE MY IMAGINATION” EVERY WEEK! BUT I DON’T!
…and on a side note… Does Shane end up with Molly?
someone…for the love of lesbians…give me some damn answers!
I watched the L word religiously for 6 seasons and was completely let down in the 6th season. Although i agree it was short, and left a bad taste in all of our mouths, everything played out the way it should. Alice and Tasha are back together, Shane is single again and free to live her life w/o crazy jenny, Bette and Tina are moving and starting everything over,Kit has a man that likes her for her,Helena saw Dylan for what she was and is STILL RICH AS HELL and JENNY IS DEAD!!!! I think that the whole mystery thing… Read more »
L Word ending was not what I was expecting. Not Happy…
I am going to start by saying I friggen love this show, i’m so sad its done.. i almost cried at the end, not because of jenny or the sweet messages everyone had for bette and tina, but because the show is over! This show was so much more that sunshine and lillipops like everything else on TV it showed the reality of a group of girlfriends, gay or straight i’m pretty sure that part doesn’t matter. Anyhow.. I think they should actually come out with a movie and call is ‘Lez Girls’ instead of a spin-off. Just so they… Read more »
mmm I only have my opinion, and all I can say is that though I did think that 8 episodes were very little to have in a final season, I did love it and this are my reasons: I loved the fact that by the end almost every important character had a word in the video including Carmen I didn’t mind that the last season was all about Jenny because dispite the hate that we all felt for her at one point or another I do remember that I started watching the series Because of her!! and the main story… Read more »
Please…..it was an awful way to end it all. We were dedicated to the show from day one – we disucssed it’s many merits, the twists and turns – clubs across North America set aside evenings for the show’s faithful followers. What a let-down. Negotiate a season 7……I’ll even add my PR abilities to this. It’s a disservice to the thousands and thousands of women who watched this show religiously. Ilene, you have a chance to fix this and give it another chance.
Kyle XY deserves a better series finale than that!
