There was speculation that The Middle might be coming to an end because contracts were up and Charlie McDermott signed on for a CBS pilot. Well, with or without son Axl, The Middle is coming back for a seventh season on ABC.
Taking place in Orson, Indiana, The Middle revolves around the Heck family. It’s headed by Mike (Neil Flynn), who manages a local quarry, and Frankie (Patricia Heaton), a dental assistant. Together, they do their best to make ends meet, have a relationship, and raise their three very different kids (McDermott, Eden Sher, and Atticus Shaffer).
Season-to-season, The Middle performed about the same in season six, averaging a 2.01 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.64 million viewers. It remains a solid performer for ABC.
McDermott has made a comedy pilot for CBS called Super Clyde. If it doesn’t become a series, it’s expected that he will return to The Middle full-time. If the project does move forward, we’ll be seeing far less of the eldest Heck son on ABC.
What do you think? Do you like The Middle? How long should it run? Would you miss McDermott if he wasn’t on the show?
I love this show! Recently became fan via syndication – as with any ensemble cast, they all work together and make the show work. McDermott is just as important as any other cast member; in fact he’s my favorite – at the very least 1/2 the season? If possible? Also, can’t get enough of Moms co-worker at the car dealership…….he’s like what Saul was to the Breaking Bad series!
Needs to be cancelled has become boring
I will be devastated!! I absolutely love Axl because he reminds me of my younger son and he Is hilarious. I hope he stays with The Middle and I hope there is a new season. I love the show please keep it on the air! All the characters are hilaaaarious 🙂
I’ve lived in China since 2003 and only recently returned to the U.S. and have discovered “The Middle.” Actually I first discovered “Everybody Loves Raymond” and it was natural, I suppose, to then start watching reruns of “The MIddle.” I love ELR and equally love TM. Eden Sher is hilarious. I really don’t know for sure if it’s still active or not. I think this article says it’s been renewed for 2016 which is good news.
I sincerely believe The Middle is the best TV show depicting family since “Father Knows Best” which ran in the 50’s. Writers for The Middle are outstanding! They have captured with humor and courage the contemporary middle American family brilliantly! The five principle actors are fantastic! I’d like to personally thank all five of them along with the writers!
We live in Australia and absolutely love love love The Middle. we stream the latest shows as we cant wait for them to air here. Hope it goes on for many more seasons. Absolute crack-up; we can’t stop laughing.
Really really enjoy The Middle! Would love to see Sue end up with Axels friend, who they have in college. They made a great couple, both naive and yet sweet. Would love to see that relationship blossom!! Axeel is real good cause you want to smack his disrespectful atitude. No doubt he would be missed but Brick, Sue and the parents could carry it. Maybe holidays they could bring Axel back if the other show takes off.
Axel is just annoying and sue is going to need to grow up. I think the writing or something has changed, can’t quite put my finger on the difference this season. It has always been one of my favorite shows till this season.
We’ve watched The Middle since episode one. There have been a lot of hilarious episodes and some that should have never aired. As much as we are fans of the show, it should have wrapped up at the end of Season Five. Season Six was a tough one to take. So many episodes seemed to have had their scripts crammed into the “done” box. Lots of wasted air time. Too much meaningless “fill”. We actually thought that the Season Six finale was going to be the Series finale. Maybe it was designed that way, since there was talk about expired… Read more »
I have to disagree that The Middle is slowing down. I think they’ve been very creative with their characters and have remained on course for the feel of the show. Last night’s episode will become one of my favorites. Each of the children had a funny story line. Axl comes back with something to do and it was hilarious! I loved the scene between Brad and Sue and how The Middle handling Brad coming out. This is one of the best shows on tv and I hope it survives season after season. As long as they are on, we will… Read more »
I love this show. It would be a total loss without all of the current characters. Axl is really funny and reminds me a lot of my own son. Sue is hilarious and Brick is very interesting. The parents are really great.
I have seen every episode of The Middle. The first two episodes of this new(and should be last) season have not been funny at all. Especially the 2nd episode of Sue at college. Frankie and Mike show they are truly lousy parents by their lack of parenting for last-at-home Brick. They couldn’t even make dinner(a joke in the Heck house of fast food meals) for Brick because they are “parented out”. Brick should have gone next door and moved in with the Donohues. This show is wearing thin. Carl Reiner was so right in the ’60’s when he said that… Read more »
Agree totally !
It’s one of my favorite shows. Axl is good on the show but I would still watch it if he left. One thing I like about the show is the writing. They don’t make middle class working people look like idiots or losers like many other sitcoms. They treat the viewers and the characters on the show with respect and still manage to be very funny. Most sitcoms have gone stale and become unfunny after this many years but this show is still as funny as the first couple of seasons. At this point in a typical sitcom’s life cycle… Read more »
I love th middle and believe it is one of shows on TV I will miss axle but I still want to watch the middle
Love, love, love The Middle. Writing is GENIUS!!! Axl is an integral part of the show s is each and every character. Our family would miss the show soooooooooooooooo much. Please keep it going, its as good as Seinfeld, Every ody Loves Raymond and Two and a Half Men before Charlie left. Rare to come across a sitcom that is an instant classic, but The Middle fits the bill!
