Tonight, The New Normal finishes its season on NBC with the marriage of Bryan and David, as well as the birth of their son via surrogate Goldie. Will the sitcom be cancelled or will it be back for a second season so viewers can see how this family continues to develop?
The New Normal, as you’ve probably heard, revolves around a pair of gay men (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells) who want to start a family. They hire a surrogate (Georgia King) who helps them fulfill their dream, while they help her realize her own. The sitcom also stars Ellen Barkin, NeNe Leakes, Bebe Wood, and Jayson Blair.
With strong lead-in support from The Voice, The New Normal debuted on September 10th to a 2.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.88 million. The pilot had already been released online so that may have tempered television viewership for the debut.
The following night, NBC aired the second episode and the ratings held steady. Considering the state of the rest of NBC’s sitcoms, a 2.5 demo rating was very good.
Unfortunately, that didn’t last. The sitcom’s ratings declined over the next several weeks. And, once The Voice completed its fall season, New Normal’s numbers really collapsed. Two weeks ago, the series reached a new low — registering a meager 0.7 in the demo and just 2.11 million viewers.
Last week, thanks to the return of The Voice, New Normal’s ratings bounced up 86% to a 1.3 in the demo with 3.32 million. Though the percentage gain is impressive, the show’s ratings are still terrible — even by NBC standards.
Though NBC has few bright spots on its schedule, its clear that the peacock network has no ratings incentive to renew The New Normal for a second season. Thankfully, the cast and crew seem to have given the sitcom’s storylines some sense of closure in tonight’s finale.
What do you think? Would you like to see The New Normal return for a second season or should NBC cancel it to make way for something new?

The show is funny and sweet. The stories have a message and every one of the actors brings a great point of view.
Please, please, please re-new!!!
Please, please give this show a second season. It’s a great show and ratings and money are not the only measurable signs of a great show. This show helps people see how many different loving families there are and this is an important message.
Best show I’ve seen in a long time. It’s so real. Please keep it!
Come on keep the show of all the crap a person watch in television this at least is worthy.
Maybe it only needs a bit more of advertisement.
Love most of your shows, keep the good work NBC… I know NBC is probably not gonna see this but anyway… you never know.

At least give it a try…
If this show gets cancelled, I am through with NBC!!!!!!! This show is not just for gay people , it is a show for everyone! Funny, touching and showing more morality than most shows on TV.Great characters, writing et al! Also it is the FIRST show that doesn’t ***** fooy around with the relationship between two gay men. And yes, that includes Modern Family, which i also enjoy. And in response to Wayne Smith, yes, there are way too many Reality Shows, TRUE TRASH TV!!! Our societies mind set is really screwed up. Wife Swap??? All these inane dating shows???… Read more »
Please keep it for a second season, I love the show, they are truly a down to earth group of people that care about each other. We don’t have a lot to go by on television today and to take this one off would really hurt. Give it a chance to pick up the viewers
I loved watching this entire show. During every episode I would have a moment of “I love this show!” I believe the upbeat nature, mixed in with the awareness-spreading qualities, of this show is compulsory in a world that’s practically looking for a reason to fight and complain about anything. The New Normal is just a great comedy, and it’s willing to ask people to stop and think about what’s really important in life. Sometimes the most important thing is not worrying about who’s right and wrong but instead just being able to sit back, enjoy, and laugh.
please allow the show to continue and build it’s audience. the show has important things to say and the comedy is great. i agree that the little girl should be less of the show, what happened to the grandma?
loved living with these people for the past nine months-they’re charming, funny, quirky & kind-a real family!i I hope the show is renewed for season 2.
omg keep the show it is amazing and amazingly funny. i think it is a new show that tackles important contreversial issues that need to be pressed. love this show and all the actors i hope nbc renews atleast for 12 more episodes to give it more of a chance. love this show
Keep the show, ditch the annoying 9 year old girl
