Are you ready for more of the Mikaelsons? The Originals TV show on The CW has been renewed for a fifth season. The fourth season of The Vampire Diaries spin-off kicked off on March 17th and is still ongoing. The show was on the cancellation “bubble,” so this renewal obviously comes as good news for the fans.
The Originals stars Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, Phoebe Tonkin, Charles Michael Davis, Yusuf Gatewood, and Riley Voelkel. Claire Holt and Leah Pipes guest star. The CW supernatural drama series follows the Mikaelson family, the world’s first vampires, as they battle to reclaim New Orleans.
The Originals: A Look at the Ratings
The fourth season of The Originals is averaging a 0.34 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 972,000 viewers. Compared to season three, that’s down by 9% and up by 6%, respectively.
When we sort by the demo ratings, The Originals ranks tenth among the 16 CW TV shows we’re tracking. Sorting by average total audience size bumps it up to the ninth position. This season five renewal makes sense, since it will help beef up The Originals‘ syndication package.
As previously reported, Michael Narducci is departing as showrunner and series creator Julie Plec will take over. Leslie Morgenstern will also executive-produce.

The Originals must continue! Not everyone has cable tv I wish the CW would recognize that in the ratings.

I am SOOO excited to see this show continuing! As huge fans of both TVD and The Originals my Mom and I travelled from Western Canada to visit some of the regular filming locations back in 2014 – to our surprise and delight we quickly discovered that this awesome show is not only one of the best on t.v., but has the warmest, most welcoming and talented cast and crew around. Thank you CW for allowing us to enjoy another entertaining season of excellent story telling – The Originals definitely deserves a better time slot.
*groan* they are gonna let julie plec take over? The writing has been so good, and Julie has proven she can’t write good television to save her life. im glad its getting another season but ugh julie

I couldn’t be happier. It was so obvious when the Original Family first came on the scene in TVD that they needed their own show. Now with TVD gone & only half of a season 4. There are so many things to get to and so many possibilities for a proper Series finale, whenever that comes. They also should move it to Wednesdays right after Supernatural. Instead of the show be on the show killer Friday night @8 PM slot!!!
