While Mr. Selfridge has supposedly been renewed, BBC1 has pulled the plug on The Paradise. There won’t be a third season for the period drama.
The Paradise revolves around the people who work and shop at the first English department store. Set in 1875, castmembers have included Emun Elliott, Joanna Vanderham, Elaine Cassidy, Sarah Lancashire, Matthew McNulty, Peter Wight, David Hayman, Stephen Wight, Sonya Cassidy, Ruby Bentall, Finn Burridge, and Patrick Malahide.
Of the cancellation, a BBC spokesperson said, “We are incredibly proud to have made two successful series of period drama The Paradise for BBC1. However, in order to make room for new dramas to come through, The Paradise won’t be returning.”
The show airs on PBS here in the US and only the first season has been shown. That ended in November and there’s been no word of airing the second season yet.
What do you think? Have you seen The Paradise? Would you watch season two? Are you sorry it’s been cancelled?
I wish the paradise hadn’t been cancelled. A lot of women can relate to Denise. I loved this show. It was a poor decision to pull the plug on it.
I am watching Mr. Selfridge and am enjoying it but I so miss The Paradise. I loved the show and was anxious to see how the main relationship went. The second season can be seen online if you can find it.
Ahh big bummer. I too think The Paradise is better than Mr. Selfridge.
PLEASE, PLEASE – SHOW SEASON TWO OF THE PARADISE IN THE USA. LOVE THE CHARACTERS, THE WRITING, EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SERIES IS FABULOUS. THERE IS VERY LITTLE ON TV ANYMORE WORTH WATCHING SO PLEASE DON’T LET US DOWN PBS – WE WANT TO SEE THE SECOND SEASON !!!
Love, love love Paradise. My sister and I cannot believe season 2 won’t be aired.
I wish BBC would reconsider. It would be such a waste!!
I am very upset that PBS is canceling The Paradise,
only after two seasons. I also loved Mr. Selfridge but,
if I had to choose, I would have to go with The
Paradise. I hope PBS will air the second season and
reconsider cancelling the series. This has been a
banner year for PBS, when you add in the success of
Downton Abbey and Sherlock Holmes, as well as Silk.
There is more programming than ever on television now,
but 90% less QUALITY programming. Please, please,
bring back The Paradise. —-Susan Hart
I absolutely agree, Susan, but it is the BBC (the British Broadcasting Corp.) that has made the decision. PBS is not to blame.
I watched both “The Paradise” and “Mr. Selfridge”. I think “Paradise” was the better of the two, in any category possible. I will not be watching the “Selfridge” season which PBS is beginning in March 2014, indeed, I quit watching it mid-way through last season. BBC1 backed the wrong horse this time.
I really enjoyed watching The Paradise…I was looking forward to season 2.. Hope PBS chooses to air season 2
I was slow to warm up to The Paradise but, when I did catch fire, I was totally consumed by the show. I really think that BBC1 has made a mistake in discontinuing this series. I’m looking forward to season 2 (hint, hint, hint PBS!) and wish that there were more seasons to come.
I love The Paradise and would have definitely watched a new season!
SORRY i’ts at an end!!
I haven’t been so tied up to some serie for a very, very long time or maybe even never! This lovely, funny, beautiful serie with gently colours, fantastic characters, from Denise and Moray, Clara, Sam and Mr Dudley to even Katherine.. Myrtle, Jonas, Susy.. everybody! There are some much material left to shoot and to make a story out of it, I really want to watch more episodes..
The reasons the BBC gave for cancelling ‘The Paradise” are ridiculous. With the “Save The Paradise” facebook page, the petition created, the complaints made to the BBC, and comments posted to various message boards indicates that the show has a very strong following. I wonder if the “powers that be” considered the ratings in the U.S. and other countries all over the world when considering their decision. A little voice in my head tells me they didn’t. “The Paradise” has a very strong fan base and should be brought back.
Sorry I meant Lark Rise to Candleford.
I love The Paradise and would have definitely watched a new season! There are so many unresolved story lines. Just like in Mark Rise to Candleford they are leaving fans hanging and very upset. They could at least have a “special” program to tie up the terribly loose ends.
I loved it and was looking forward to the next season. I would . Most definitely watch!
I am so gutted about the decision to cancel the paradise I loved it so much please reconsiderbbringing it back it is such a lovely show 🙁
