ABC has cancelled one daytime series and renewed two others. Fans of General Hospital can breathe easy, at least for a little while.
The network has confirmed that The Revolution, their ratings-challenged talk show, will go off the air on July 6th. The TV series debuted in January and took the place of One Life to Live. Hosted by Tim Gunn, Harley Pasternak, Ty Pennington, Jennifer Ashton, and Tiffanie Davis, The Revolution has been a ratings disappointment and has been averaging about 1.3 million viewers according to Deadline.
Meanwhile, both General Hospital and The Chew have been renewed for the 2012-13 season. While General Hospital’s viewer numbers have come down over the years, the ratings have shown signs of improvement. In late March, GH averaged 2.3 million viewers while The Chew drew 2.2 million. The Revolution pulled in just 1.3 million.
Katie Couric’s new talk show, Katie, is slated to premiere on September 10th and will air at 3pm on most stations. Until that happens, ABC will fill the timeslot with an hour-long afternoon version of Good Morning America, tentatively titled GMA in the Afternoon.
While the alphabet network hasn’t said as much, they are obviously still searching for low-cost programming to fill their daytime hours. While the renewal of General Hospital has ensured that the venerable soap opera will reach its 50th anniversary — on April 1, 2013 — there’s certainly no guarantees beyond that.
What do you think? Did ABC make the right decision to renew General Hospital? Do you think it will reach its 51st year?

I know it is cheaper to have reality shows than soaps where actors get paid. But your canceling All My Children and One Life to Live was a huge mistake. Do Not do this to General Hospital. I don’t need Katie Couric and ABC Afternoon, it just a repeat of more morning stuff. I don’t know who does your planning for what’s hot and what’s not, but they need to listen up to the people who watch your ABC or they shall be in the unemployment lines.
[…] 50th year on air in 2013, is the longest-running soap opera currently in production. The show was renewed for the 2012-13 season back in April. QUICK TAKE CHECK-IN TO ABC’S “GENERAL HOSPITAL” ONE HOUR EARLIER […]
BIG MISTAKE to cancel soaps and The Revolution just to ultimately make way for Katie Couric. Channel 2 did the right thing by getting rid of Katie and you’re doing the wrong thing by trying to replace Oprah with Katie.
I am a soap fan who watched All My Children and One Life to Life since its beginning. I watch Chew and I think it is good. Not thrilled with Revolution. Totally disappointed with ABC cancelling my two favorite soaps and wish they would come back.
I love Jason Morgan and Sonny and his sons Michael and Dontae but I hate the new Kristina, Maxie, and I just hate Heather. But hey keep the men and Carly and I am hooked for life and I am only 27 so we have sometime.
My husband and I have watched General Hospital since it started. If you take it off the air We wont watch television .Its bad enough you take all the good shows off the air for stupid reality shows, and taking off the closer was bad also. keepup the goodwork and nobody will watch T.V.
I have been watching All My Children, One Life to Live, and General Hospital all my life. After the cancellation of All My Children & One Life to Live, I made sure to officially set up my series recording for General Hospital. I have made every effort not to watch a single episode of The Chew or The Revolution. I would deliberately change my television and have begun watching Days of Our Lives !!!! Although, The Chew and The Revolution were great ideas for television shows. I honestly probably would have watched them at any time, besides during my All… Read more »
I cant believe they took off something I looked forward to when I retired. I planed my day around the soaps. I never have watched the chew or reveloution because I was so mad. If they ever cancel General Hospital I will never watch abc in the afternoon again. what happens to that stupid Dr Oz show?
I watched AMC and OLTL for years and HATE ABC for cancelling them. The chew only ranks up with AMC because they wrote the show down before it cancelled. I even stopped watching it. A couple years before that the show was awesome! OLTL was my favorite show and I am still very upset that it is gone. ABC needs to stop looking for a cheap way out and bring back our guilty pleasures. I am fearful to even start watching GH for the fear of cancellation. If that show goes down your really going to have a HUGE problem… Read more »
I was very disappointed when AMC and OLTL were cancelled but I gave The Chew and The Revolution a chance. The Chew isn’t terrible but can’t compete with the shows on the Food Network. I am a huge Tim Gunn fan after watching several seasons of Project Runway but even he couldn’t make The Revolution worth watching. I think it was a smart move to cancel the show. I’ll give Katie a chance but I long to see OLTL return.
I watched less than five airing of The Chew and The Reveloution. I must say, it didn’t get my attention. If you want to contine to keep your viewers attention, keep General Hospital cause it’s gr-reat!!
I WANT KEEP PLEASE RETURN ONE LIFE TO LIVE AND CONTINUE AIRING GENERAL HOSPITAL KEEP NOT FAIR CANCEL I WANT KEEP RUN VERY GOOD ACTOR GREAT MANY YEAR
The Chew sucks! Thanks to that stupid, googly-eyed Carla Hall who is a total moron, rude to her co-workers, and is constantly trying to upstage the others.. Shame on Mario, and Michael , who are classy great chefs. Why havent they fired her skinny ass already. I’m only one person, but I hope she disappears soon, then I may start watching The Chew again.
General hospital is a great old show, Please keep it going, when One Life to Live and All my Children were taken off, I stopped watching alot of television. I like the shows that replaced the soaps by tv just isnt the same… I grew up with those soaps, and General Hospital is the only one I have left… Hell yes Im gonna keep weatching!!!!!
I hate the Chew and the revolution. Please bring back One Life to Live and continue airing General Hospital.
I hate the Chew and the revolution dump them both. Please bring back One life to live and keep General Hospital on the air.
