Well, there’s one singing competition that won’t be back next season. The Sing-Off has been cancelled after three seasons on the NBC.
Hosted by Nick Lachey, this TV series seeks to find the most-talented a capella singing group in America. Judges have included Ben Folds, Shawn Stockman, Nicole Scherzinger, and Sara Bareilles. The judges decide who advances to the finale and the final winners are determined by viewer votes. The champs take home a Sony recording contract and $200,000.
The Sing-Off began in December 2009 as a short-run series with just four episodes. It did reasonably well — averaging a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.9 million viewers — so the peacock network brought it back for season two.
It returned in December 2010, expanded to five episodes, and the ratings rose 26% — to an average of a 2.9 in the demo with 8.6 million viewers.

NBC decided to take another chance and give The Sing-Off a two-hour timeslot on the fall schedule with 11 episodes. That gamble didn’t pay off and the ratings were much lower. By the end of the season, The Sing-Off averaged a 1.5 in the demo with 4.56 million.
On our NBC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of TV shows on the network, The Sing-Off has an “C-” grade. The network has now cancelled the show.
NBC could have brought it back for another limited run, perhaps over the summer or in December but were likely hesitant to flood their schedule with yet another singing/talent competition. America’s Got Talent has been very successful for them over the summer months and NBC plans to run two cycles of The Voice next season. There just wasn’t a place on the schedule for The Sing-Off any longer.
What do you think? Do you think NBC should have kept The Sing-Off, perhaps run it in December? Are you sorry to hear that it’s been cancelled and won’;t be back for a fourth season?
This is a travesty! We were looking forward to season 4. All of the other music shows are similar when compared with each other, American Idol, the Voice and X-Factor. Really? They decided to get rid of the only show that was actually different because it required a group to work together to sing difficult and original arrangements of classic and current song alike. Why not get rid of Simon Cowell or Randy Jackson since these shows actually stink! Bring back the true talent that requires only a microphone and the group itself. I’d love to see a group of… Read more »
The show had a unique take on the standard singing competition the network in it’s infinite wisdom cancelled the unique and kept the carbon copies. Way to go NBC another of my favorite shows drops off the map.
this show is much better than the other singing contests and way better than america’s got talent. they are the truly talented people in the world on the sing-off! bring it back please even if for a short time
I loved that show! I wish you would bring it back. It is much better then The Voice. The people are more talented.
Bring It Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This makes me really sad. I was less impressed with the format of the show this past year, but still LOVED the performances and groups. I’m thankful Pentatonix made it on to win before the show got cancelled. I really think it’s a shame… this show did such a great job of showcasing genuine talent in a respectful environment. Drama might sell, but it also grows old quickly – same as Christina Aguilara’s cleavage. One round of the Voice is more than I can take personally.
Just checking to see WHEN it would be back, only to find it cancelled. This show has musical integrity as well as entertainment.
BRING IT BACK!!!
I have stopped watching ABC totally when they cancelled All My Children and One Life to Live. I have not waivered, no ABC at all since January. I may have to do the same with NBC. When a network would rather put on fluff or slapstick comedy instead of showcasing talent every chance it can?, why should I watch? The Voice is okay, but 1 season a year is enough. I have season 2 and 3 on dvr and watch them often, not for the eliminations now, just for the musical pleasure. It appealed to all ages and was unique… Read more »
Worst decision ever!!! Finally a show where the judges treat each other with respect AND the contestants actually have talent, and it gets canceled. Shame on the public for not watching and supporting a program that displays good taste just because it doesn’t provide shock value. A bigger shame on NBC for canceling good taste just because it doesn’t get the highest ratings. They would rather promote the lowest common denominator than encourage viewers to appreciate something finer. How sad is that.
Please oh please bring this show back. It was one of the best shows EVER an I so looked forward to that show each week. Much prefer this over America’s Got Talent!
WELL THAT DOES IT FOR ME THEN. THIS CANCELLATION IS THE FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN. I PUT MY TRUST INTO NBC TO DO WHAT’S RIGHT, TO PRESENT IT’S VIEWERS WITH ENGAGING ENTERTAINMENT, AND WHAT DO THESE MORONS DO, THEY CANCEL SHOW AFTER SHOW BECAUSE THE FRIGGIN “RATINGS” NUMBERS ARE NOT HIGH ENOUGH OR SOME OTHER LAME AZZ EXCUSE. THEY CANCELLED HARRY’S LAW, AND NOW THIS. I”M DONE. I’M A BIG SUPPORTER OF AMERICA’S GOT TALENT, BUT I WILL NOT, AND I REPEAT, I WILL NOT WATCH ANYMORE PROGRAMS PRESENTED ON NBC. BREAKS MY HEART TOO AS THE SUMMER OLYMPICS… Read more »
I can’t believe it won’t be on. I could not wait every week. MY children and I loved it.
I really think that the talent of the singers were awesome. I listen to the sing-off songs
on Pandora Internet Radio. I like to listen to the songs. Put it back on!!!!
That seriously is the worst decision EVER! It was one of the best shows that we as a family have been able to enjoy. It was always a family night with great excitement to see how the groups did each week.
This was the only show that display real singing talent.
Put it back on!!!!!! At least this was a good show unlike so many others…..
