Well, there’s one singing competition that won’t be back next season. The Sing-Off has been cancelled after three seasons on the NBC.
Hosted by Nick Lachey, this TV series seeks to find the most-talented a capella singing group in America. Judges have included Ben Folds, Shawn Stockman, Nicole Scherzinger, and Sara Bareilles. The judges decide who advances to the finale and the final winners are determined by viewer votes. The champs take home a Sony recording contract and $200,000.
The Sing-Off began in December 2009 as a short-run series with just four episodes. It did reasonably well — averaging a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.9 million viewers — so the peacock network brought it back for season two.
It returned in December 2010, expanded to five episodes, and the ratings rose 26% — to an average of a 2.9 in the demo with 8.6 million viewers.

NBC decided to take another chance and give The Sing-Off a two-hour timeslot on the fall schedule with 11 episodes. That gamble didn’t pay off and the ratings were much lower. By the end of the season, The Sing-Off averaged a 1.5 in the demo with 4.56 million.
On our NBC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of TV shows on the network, The Sing-Off has an “C-” grade. The network has now cancelled the show.
NBC could have brought it back for another limited run, perhaps over the summer or in December but were likely hesitant to flood their schedule with yet another singing/talent competition. America’s Got Talent has been very successful for them over the summer months and NBC plans to run two cycles of The Voice next season. There just wasn’t a place on the schedule for The Sing-Off any longer.
What do you think? Do you think NBC should have kept The Sing-Off, perhaps run it in December? Are you sorry to hear that it’s been cancelled and won’;t be back for a fourth season?
WE LOVE Sing-Off! Those people have actual talent!!!!! It takes a lot to be able to sing a capella! Limited viewing over the holidays would be better than nothing!!!!!!!
Booo…. I have to echo previous comments. Quality, family friendly entertainment. Way better than anything they have on America’s got talent.
BRING IT BACK
Don’t blame NBC. The ratings weren’t there and that’s what they base decisions on.
I believe the Sing-Off was the most enjoyable and it’s talent outstanding, but it apparently isn’t something that appealed to the mass TV audience and that’s what keeps shows on the air, not the level of quality or sophistication.
It would be great if one of the many cable or satellite channels would add it. I’d even tune in for reruns or to see the same singers that were featured last season doing more!
The Sing-Off featured great talent and brought a fresh and unique style to current TV “musical talent competitions”. Unfortunately, most TV watchers didn’t tune in or didn’t care for it. I”m very disappointed by the news, and hope someone offers to pick up the show and allow this quality entertainment to return
Having sung in a acappella groups, I really loved it and wish it would be started up again! A cappella showcases TRUE talent — no band or orchestra to cover up shaky parts.
My family really liked this program. We would like to see NBC bring Sing-Off Back.
Shorten the number of episodes would have been better than cancelling.
I love the sing off and was looking for another season I wish they kept it and got rid of american idol. The judges were fun and polite and the singers were really good
I loved the Sing Off. It was truly a family show with outstanding talent and polite judges.
NBC should definitely air this versus some of their other horrible programming.
The Sing-Off was the best music show on television. What is wrong with NBC? I hope another network picks it up and it blows up and becomes number one AND makes the other network a WHOLE lot of money. That show exhibited real singers and true vocal gifts and talents. I guess any show that is family friendly won’t last in America. What a shame. (Shaking my head.) Hopefully, America can put up enough fuss and get the show back on the air on some other station. The Sing-Off was the only show I watched on NBC, so now I… Read more »
The decision to cancel Sing Off most definitely was a true setback for great family musical entertainment on so many levels! Quality reality programming is such a rarity…it’s an utter shame that NBC s judgement was so shortsightedly BAD. I , my wife and our friends will not easily forget or forgive this horrendous decision and will base our future TV viewing accordingly. GOOD BYE, NBC.
I am so disappointed. I don’t get in to reality tv but was so hooked. I just deleted last season’s recordings to make room for this season. It was so awesome!!! Boo on NBC!
By the way…it was good clean fun for the family…no cussing, critics were polite and no one showed major cleavage!!!!
I am so disappointed that this show has been cancelled. This show always presented such awesome talented. I wish NBC would re-evaluate this.
I’m very disappointed that The Sing-Off was cancelled. What an awesome show this was.
The sing off was the best show followed by the voice.I would rather like to American idol gone and Americas got talent off. Or new management at NBC
I loved the sing off. Was looking forward to another season. I’d much rather watch it than “the voice”!!
