Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

Completely disappointed. I thought it was just being held up by holidays or something. Finally looked on line and found it is completely gone. Very sad. I loved this show and recorded it each week. Its a shame we finally have a show worth watching and it gets cancelled for the shows that are stupid.

Are you joking, I used to love watching NBC because they had all the great show’s, now I only watch 2 show’s on the whole network and that is the News and Mercy…. I can not believe they cancelled Trauma, they only want to keep the shows that no one watches. The reason I know this is because everyone at work talks about what they watched the night before and I never hear NBC mentioned at all!!! I am disappointed that NBC is going down the tubes…. I mean seriously they really need to get their head in the game… Read more »
Im incredibly disappointed in NBC. Every time I get interested in a show and really begin to enjoy it- its taken off air. Trauma was never really given a chance. I watched Mercy a few times and it didnt catch my interest at all. If there were more shows like Trauma on air – children might show an interest in the medical or first responders fields- shows can really be used to learn.
I love Trauma my husband and I would watch this show every week and if we were not at home we would DVR it and watch later. This was the best show on TV. I can not believe it has been canceled I like so many have tried to watch Mercy but it didn’t prove to be worthy of my time. If I watch a show on TV it has to get my attention or I will not watch it. Can’t believe this. I wonder who makes the decisions? VERY SAD DAY
