Bad news for fans of Underground. Variety reports WGN America has cancelled the TV series after two seasons.
The historical drama follows the heroes of the Underground Railroad who harnessed every bit of their wits, strength, and grit in order to escape slavery and live as free men and women. The cast includes Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Jessica De Gouw, Alano Miller, Christopher Meloni, Marc Blucas, and Reed Diamond.
The cancellation is not a huge surprise. Earlier, we reported that WGN America was moving away from original series and shifting towards cheaper programming and reruns. Not to mention, the ratings for Underground‘s second season marked a significant drop from season one.
Overall, season two averaged a .19 rating in the 18-49 demo and 567,000 viewers. That’s decent for a small cable network like WGN America. However, those numbers show a nearly 40% decrease in the ratings from season one, which averaged a .32 rating in the 18-49 demo and 993,000 viewers. It seems a large portion of the fan base didn’t continue watching beyond season one.
However, the show still has fans. Recently, we asked viewers if there should be a third season of Underground and 92% said “yes.” Sadly, it looks like WGN America went in another direction.

Loved underground. I loved that it showed the heroism of the characters. Shouldn’t be cancelled.
This series represents “history”, not reality TV like the Kardashian’s but HISTORY!!!!!
If WGN America doesn’t know the power this show will do to continously educate our youth and some adults for that matter, then ask executives of OWN to back the series.
I havent seen or watched a series with such magitude since Roots, real actors, real issues.

This hurts, what happened to Rosa lee and the baby? This shouldn’t happen, the show is so good. Maybe advertise harder or something but the show is amazing and should never have been canceled. This is so sad
I can’t believe that they canceled Underground. I love this show and i think they should bring it back for those of us who loved it.
No great loss. I tried to watch this series but I just could not get into it. Too many music interjections that I could not stand. Story was not very good either. Lots of times I’m really bummed on some shows getting cancelled. Not this one.

I JUST! found out that Underground was cancelled!! I am in shock, and so disappointed!! Characters are complex and believable, and the writing is excellent. I really hope a network picks it in the fall.

What a shame. Fantastic show, although it did not measure up to season one. Weren’t you enthralled by the episode (really a one-woman show) with Harriet Tubman. A tour de force, worthy of an emmy.
This is a wonderful, informative show with lots of history and I love the action. What happen to the Macon 7 and did Mama ever catch up with the rest? To hell with cable. I hope a local station like Fox can pick it up or even try AMC. Come on suits, executives, find another way to continue this show. At least a series finale! Cancel all these stupid super natural shows, like Preacher or American Gods that don’t make sense. It was so refreshing to see some real American History.
