The aliens came and, despite some ratings challenges, they are staying — for at least one more season. ABC has renewed the V TV show for a second season.
Like the original, the new V revolves around the arrival of aliens to the planet Earth. While the visitors profess that they’ve come in peace, their ulterior motives slowly become clear. The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Lourdes Benedicto, Laura Vandervoort, and Scott Wolf.
The series got off to a strong start in November with a 5.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 14.3 million total viewers. At the time, it was the highest rated debut of the 2009-10 season. Unfortunately, a large percentage of those viewers didn’t return for the second week. Episode two brought in a 3.8 rating and 10.7 million.
Week three dropped yet again, to a 3.1 in the demo and 9.26 million viewers. Thankfully, the ratings decline evened off from there. Unfortunately, due to some backstage issues, ABC put the show on hiatus for several months.

When V returned, the show’s ratings were understandably lower than they had been. Still, the drop could have been far worse than it was — attracting a 2.8 in the demo and 7.03 million viewers. The numbers later slipped to a low of a 1.9 rating and 4.87 million.
But now, in the final weeks of the season, V is starting to show a little growth. Last week’s brought a 2.1 and 5.37 million. This week attracted a 2.3 and 5.69 million. These increases seem to mirror the growth in its lead-in’s viewership (Lost) but they are increases nonetheless.
While it would seem that ABC should realistically cancel V, the network has a tradition of showing some faith in one or two struggling programs each year. It would seem that V is one of those shows. According to executive producer Scott Rosenbaum, ABC has renewed V for a second season of 13 episodes.
Will this gamble pay off? ABC has had mixed results in the past. Samantha Who? didn’t work out while Castle has grown nicely. With an ongoing sci-fi storyline, V isn’t exactly the type of show that’s inviting to new viewers. Perhaps the network has a plan. Time will tell.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that V has been renewed for season two? Are you surprised? What would you do to boost viewership?

V is a great show. ABC should not relly only on live tv viewers, since we live in a new age, where the internet plays a big role. I always watch my episodes through internet, and i’m realy enjoying this show.
Keep it comming, but don’t take too long…. (i’m dying here, to see the next season)
Cheers!
The New show does not have any of the thrill of the old one. The original had a feeling that the aliens were already invading, (Stealing humans as meat, and piping away the seawater). . This new one, is liking a bad CSI episode. It might look dated now, but at the time V was cutting edge, and well focused. To bad the new one, is a half hearted effort. One more season tops.
V is OK. I will watch it since I like science fiction – even bad science fiction. However, ABC desperately needs some new writers for the show – the plot is way too slow and too predictible. Maybe ABC could hire some high school graduates to improve the scripts.
This is one of the few (very few) Sci-Fi shows that doesn’t stink up the house when I have it playing.
It has it’s faults (like the bad actor that plays the priest), but for fans of the old V series this is an interesting storyline remade with better effects.
Keep it up!
Masterfully casted, I am absorbed by the people in this storyline! I am not a big fan of sci-fi, but the show has me hooked!! Because of the plot twists, characters, evolving story, you must see each episode sequentially to fully appreciate the challenges that face the characters. The writing, visual effects, and acting is top notch.
This is a great show. Keep it going please! This is much much better that the 80’s
Love it….and will miss it. Pizza and beer with Jack Bauer on Monday and ice cream and coffee with V on Tuesdays………(then I return to a healthy diet) ! Don’t understand low ratings. Glad they aren’t putting it to rest…..I keep spreading the word.
THIS IS AWESOME
More Facebook and Social Media campaigns could really help the V series. Try capturing the fate of the planet when V returns to the air…I loved the Facebook video where Anna addressed us, that was awesome
V stinks! Nothing new from the old V of yester year!
V is the best show even when I go out of town or out of the country i have to go online and watch it because I dont wanna miss one single episode….please keep more coming! I love it!
Love the show, but missed season finali because of cancellation due to election results. Will it be rebroadcast?
@jackie: Not anytime soon but you can probably see it on abc.com
Yes! Keep it on. V and FlashForward are the only things I watch, and it is on the internet, not on TV. I suggest that you don’t wait until 2011 if you want the show to survive. People forget. The momentum fades.
This is a great show. Keep it going please! The casting and plot line are top notch
I thought this was great It would be a travesty for this show to get cancelled. I thought it rocked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a great show !! keep on comming whit season 2 3 4 5 etc !!
