Though FOX clearly said that last night’s episode of Wayward Pines was the series finale, there’s still talk of bringing the show back for a second season.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
Regarding the possibility of a second season, showrunner Chad Hodge didn’t have any news to share but didn’t rule out a renewal either. He told THR, “There is no official season two yet, no talks yet. Nothing to report on that front.”
Hodge shared more information with TVInsider and said, “There is some talk, but there’s nothing official. When we wrote that ending, it wasn’t necessarily so that we could have a Season 2, it was just to show that history repeats itself. Obviously it seems like it leaves a window to a Season 2, but that wasn’t the reason we did it. Right now, I’m focused on the new pilot [TNT’s Good Behavior] that I’m doing with [Wayward Pines author] Blake [Crouch].”
Meanwhile, executive producer M. Night Shyamalan is a bit more hopeful. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with Deadline (SPOILERS AHEAD):
DEADLINE: With Charlie Tahan’s character waking up in a rebuilt and seemingly safe town at the end of the finale, it looks and feels like Wayward Pines is perfectly poised for a second season. The numbers are there, the inclination from Fox is there, so are you, Chad and Blake going to head back to Wayward Pines?
M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN: We’re super surprised, excited, humbled by the reaction to Wayward Pines, and I did ask Blake to come over to my house, which he did. We did sit down for a few days, and we talked about all kinds of things, and we both felt very good about our time together. We both made a pact saying if we did decide to do something more here that we would approach it with a very high level of integrity and not let the opportunity dictate it because we’re both happy to walk away.
DEADLINE: Sounds like you are diplomatically saying a Season 2 is in the cards, am I picking that up right?
SHYAMALAN: I’m actually not being diplomatic, I mean, I’m being somewhat diplomatic, but I’m genuinely being as open as I can. The one thing I’m fearful of television is its open-ended nature. I’m such an end backwards kind of filmmaker, storyteller, and that’s what I loved about doing these 10 episodes. I knew where I wanted to go. I knew I wanted the fences to come down. I knew where we were heading for the finale and so we could architecture the 10-episodes in that manner.
So, I am happy to walk away, especially with such a wonderful reaction and all that stuff. But honestly, Blake and I do have an idea.
DEADLINE: And that idea for a Season 2 is? We now have both Matt Dillon and Toby Jones’ characters dead in the finale but could any of the other major actors from Season 1 return?
SHYAMALAN: We have an idea we’ve discussed. That’s all I’ll say.
Will there be a second season of Wayward Pines? For now, according to FOX’s press materials, the series is over.
Could the show be resurrected for another run? Given the success of the first season and FOX’s current ratings struggles, it seems like a very real possibility. As always, we’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Would you like to see Wayward Pines return for a second season? Would you watch it as part of the regular season or would you prefer another summer season?
I am not the kind of guy to write anything about a show being cancelled or anything else for that matter. But my wife and I really enjoyed season 1 and were so disappointed to hear it will not be coming back for a season 2. I hope they will rethink this and make another run.
Please let wayward pines continue. I absolutely loved the first season
Wayward pines is a really go show.an I think there should be a 2nd season
Please let there be a 2nd season. I would hate to see such a great show end so short.
Truly enjoyed wayward pines….it needs another Season!!!!!!!!
Finally a show that’s not reality nonsense…….bring Wayward Pines Back!!!
Yes, I would like to see what Ethan Burke started finally completed. The town was controlled like a death camp. Let everyone finally have the life that’s possible and not controlled. Who wants to live under big brothers rule.
Please do not cancel another good show
They didn’t show him being blown up, they even said the First Gen was upset with him and dealt with him then showed him Hanging in the Town Square.
It would be great to see a season 2, this show as great, and unique. There is so much junk that gets renewed. It would be nice to see a good one return!
This show is way too good not to have a season 2!! There is so much crap that is being renewed, it would be nice to have a good one make the cut.
I really liked this show and to be honest I usually do not watch these types of shows please bring it back for a second season!!!!
I have been a Wayward Pines fan from day one. I have absolutely loved the show. I have also read the book trilogy. Was so excited when I saw that it was going to be made into a TV show. My only issue is that the TV show did not end the same way that the book did. The book ending left me very frustrated and wanting more. For anyone that read the trilogy books I’m sure they understand what I mean. There are endless possibilities that could be season 2 season three etc. I agree with a lot of… Read more »
This is my Favorite show on Thursday Nights!!!!!! Please do a Second Season, Sad that Matt Dillon was shown Hanging at the end, hoped he survived, but Expected he was going to Die from the Beginning of the Show, too big of a Star for TV to tie during Prime Filming Season Fall and Winter!!!!!! Love the Premise of this show, still Don’t have ALL the Answers!!!!!! Keep it GOING!!!!!!
Sad that Matt Dillon was shown Hanging at the end,
How was that Matt Dillon, his character was blown up 3 years earlier?
I can’t imagine a second season without Matt Dillon. He was killed off at the season finale. It was obvious since he was sitting in the elevator holding the bombs.
I guess I’m not in age range you want but this show is so good its the only TV show I watch at time of showing. Cant wait to watch after it shows with DVR.
