Though FOX clearly said that last night’s episode of Wayward Pines was the series finale, there’s still talk of bringing the show back for a second season.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
Regarding the possibility of a second season, showrunner Chad Hodge didn’t have any news to share but didn’t rule out a renewal either. He told THR, “There is no official season two yet, no talks yet. Nothing to report on that front.”
Hodge shared more information with TVInsider and said, “There is some talk, but there’s nothing official. When we wrote that ending, it wasn’t necessarily so that we could have a Season 2, it was just to show that history repeats itself. Obviously it seems like it leaves a window to a Season 2, but that wasn’t the reason we did it. Right now, I’m focused on the new pilot [TNT’s Good Behavior] that I’m doing with [Wayward Pines author] Blake [Crouch].”
Meanwhile, executive producer M. Night Shyamalan is a bit more hopeful. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with Deadline (SPOILERS AHEAD):
DEADLINE: With Charlie Tahan’s character waking up in a rebuilt and seemingly safe town at the end of the finale, it looks and feels like Wayward Pines is perfectly poised for a second season. The numbers are there, the inclination from Fox is there, so are you, Chad and Blake going to head back to Wayward Pines?
M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN: We’re super surprised, excited, humbled by the reaction to Wayward Pines, and I did ask Blake to come over to my house, which he did. We did sit down for a few days, and we talked about all kinds of things, and we both felt very good about our time together. We both made a pact saying if we did decide to do something more here that we would approach it with a very high level of integrity and not let the opportunity dictate it because we’re both happy to walk away.
DEADLINE: Sounds like you are diplomatically saying a Season 2 is in the cards, am I picking that up right?
SHYAMALAN: I’m actually not being diplomatic, I mean, I’m being somewhat diplomatic, but I’m genuinely being as open as I can. The one thing I’m fearful of television is its open-ended nature. I’m such an end backwards kind of filmmaker, storyteller, and that’s what I loved about doing these 10 episodes. I knew where I wanted to go. I knew I wanted the fences to come down. I knew where we were heading for the finale and so we could architecture the 10-episodes in that manner.
So, I am happy to walk away, especially with such a wonderful reaction and all that stuff. But honestly, Blake and I do have an idea.
DEADLINE: And that idea for a Season 2 is? We now have both Matt Dillon and Toby Jones’ characters dead in the finale but could any of the other major actors from Season 1 return?
SHYAMALAN: We have an idea we’ve discussed. That’s all I’ll say.
Will there be a second season of Wayward Pines? For now, according to FOX’s press materials, the series is over.
Could the show be resurrected for another run? Given the success of the first season and FOX’s current ratings struggles, it seems like a very real possibility. As always, we’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Would you like to see Wayward Pines return for a second season? Would you watch it as part of the regular season or would you prefer another summer season?
If you weren’t going to bring the show back for another season I wouldn’t have started to get involved in it in the first place. The show kept you wanting to see more and more, very interesting.

My son called me up and asked, ‘are you watching Wayward Pines’ and I said YES. It is awesome. Please bring back a second season.
Absolutely loved the series and would love another season and the summer was awesome as it gave me something great to watch in my off season to other shows. There are NO good shows in the summer. I wish there were more great shows on in the off season. Too many good shows on when football is on.
Yes I truly hope there is a season 2 and more it’s great and so different from other bs on TV . I would be thoroughly disappointed if not. So disappointed it just can’t be.
