At the FX portion of the TCA press tour, network head John Landgraf announced the renewals of three comedies; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Louie, and recent entry Wilfred.
Starring Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Fiona Gubelmann, and Dorian Brown, Wilfred is based on an Australian TV series of the same name. Paired with the season two return of Louie, the show debuted on June 23rd to a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.55 million viewers. That represented the best premiere numbers for a comedy in the cable channel’s history.
The ratings held up well for episode two but then dropped by more than 30% for episode three. Fortunately, they didn’t stay at that level. This week’s episode hit a series low with a 0.6 demo rating and 1.40 million viewers but that’s understandable considering it aired opposite the return of Jersey Shore.
Thus far this season, Wilfred’s been averaging a 0.8 in the demo and 1.75 million. That’s significantly better than the cable’s other Thursday night comedy, Louie, which is benefiting from the Wilfred lead-in. FX is reportedly very happy with the pairing.
There’s no word on how many episodes FX has ordered for a second season but another 13 episodes seems likely. Louie’s been running during the summer months so if they continue linking the two shows, season two of Wilfred will probably debut next June. The season one finale of Wilfred is set to air on September 8th.
What do you think? Do you watch the TV series? Are you glad that Wilfred’s been renewed for season two or would have rather seen it be cancelled?

I watched about all the episodes of the first season. I liked it, I thought it was funny enough to watch. When I watched the previews before the series started I thought it was going to be stupid, but when I watched a few episodes it started to grow on me. I even seen a few episodes on IFC channel that I never seen on FX.
Wilfred is ******* amazing!!!!!!!!
Best show on tv today
I really like this show is not like any other it has a dark sense of humor, I specially love the quotes at the starting of each episode and the music suits the ambiance of the scene, I hope to continue seeing many more seasons to come and thank the creators along with the actors for their hard work of such a interesting show, thank you!
I love Wilfred – fresh and original. For those of you who only watched a few episodes, go back and watch the entire season. It’s well worth it. Glad to hear FX is renewing.
Wilfred is the best show ever and if they cancel it I will become very depressed
I keep watching for Elijah Wood. The show is getting better, it has it’s off episodes, but some are plain hilarious! And the season finale was great, is he nuts, dead or what? Yay Elijah wood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve watched every episode of Season One and I think the show is brilliant as well. I wish more people knew about it because I think it is quite clever. I have enjoyed every episode. I’m a 53-year-old woman but I am not typical of my age group and often enjoy things that people my age or gender would not watch. I am glad that FX gave it a second season and I hope they will give it many more seasons. Wilfred has a message to impart and it makes me both think and laugh when I watch it. It… Read more »
I have watched the first season, and I think the show is BRILLIANT. I was skeptical based on the previews, but I’m very glad I gave Wilfred a chance… as I am that FX gave it a second season.
The show is equally hilarious, and at times painful to watch due to the discomforting subject matter – watch the episode with the mom from Malcom in the middle and you will get my drift. In my opinion it may be the best half hour show on TV as it makes you wonder beyond the 30 minutes. My measure of a good program is how fast it seems to go by and this show makes you want for more very quickly.
At first we weren’t too excited about Wilfred, the first episode didn’t give the show justice. But, as each episode comes on we have loved them more and more and now we look forward to the next episode.
boring show should have been canceled
This is by far the best show on television since two and a half men
I’m not sure exactly why, but I LOVE Wilfred. In fact my wife and I both are enjoying it. (And we’re in our 40’s.)
I can’t say that it’s a great show, but there’s something sort of compelling about it. Just can’t put my finger on what that is. Elijah Woods is always great, but the guy playing the dog is awesome. And after the previews I didn’t think I would like him at all. He definitely grows on you. (His humor is so low key and snarky — and he’s very unpredictable.)
From the previews I was really looking forward to this show. I watched all of the first episode but only made it through about 10 minutes of the second one. I guess I’ve just gotten too old for these types of series because I didn’t like this at all.
