In 2016, after more than a decade off the air, The X-Files TV show returned to FOX as a limited event series. Although the ratings landscape had changed drastically during this show’s off years, and the new installment only had six episodes, it topped all the other FOX TV series in the Nielsens. Can the 10 episodes of the 11th season meet or beat those figures? If Chris Carter and the cast are interested in making more episodes, will The X-Files be cancelled or renewed for season 12? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
Season 11 of The X-Files on FOX picks up immediately after the events of the season 10 finale cliffhanger. The sci-fi mystery thriller stars David Duchovny as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully. Mulder and Scully investigate unexplained or “X-Files” cases — which have answers involving paranormal phenomena. Returning in season 11 are Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Annabeth Gish, Lauren Ambrose, Robbie Amell, Veronica Cartwright, Chris Owens, and Dean Haglund. They are joined by newcomers including Barbara Hershey and Haley Joel Osment.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
3/22 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
For comparisons: The 10th season of The X-Files on FOX averaged a 3.19 in the 18-49 year old viewer demographic and a total viewership of 9.534 million.
What do you think? Do you like The X-Files TV show? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a 12th season on FOX?
*5/14/18 update: FOX isn’t planning on making a 12th season of The X-Files anytime soon.
Fox did very little to promote the show this time because they are selling out to Disney. Time slot was awful. Carter was on acid ( or maybe needed to be tripping). Still, there were 5 excellent shows this season and it will make money in other countries now. Bring back DD and let GA pout a little more…she never got over the boys shunning her when she became pregnant season 2…at least this is what I have read. She’s great but the show must go on. Lastly, x files typically lasted 45 minutes. The new seasons barely make 40.… Read more »
does anyone think that William’s father is Knowle Rohrer?
Not happening people it over main character done reprise actors stupid.
I want to believe in ….. SEASON 12 !
With Anderson leaving I doubt it will be renewed
I love the X-files! One of my all time favorite shows! Thrilled about it’s resurgence, but this season (11) had some STUPID episodes, so far off the storyline! Forehead sweatEpisode 7 and the twins episode insulted my intelligence. Episode 8 is back on track. Please Chris Carter, stick to what we LOVE about the show. I desperately want the show to continue. Thank you! Sincerely, Carrie Hillman, Life Long Fan.
Love it! Keep it!
Good old Spectrum raised my TV rates and dropped Fox off my cable, so I’ll have to wait until I can stream. As for myself, the non-conspiracy shows are far better.
Spectrum, my scissors are ready to cut the cable. Good going.
I watched the first episode then turned it off since then, whats wrong is Chris Carter decided their was only a government conspiracy some of the time. No pictures of Obama at anytime as being part of the government. X-files is nothing more then a propaganda tool for democrats now.
Pictures of Obama wouldn’t be visible now in government offices because he’s no longer in office. When a new President takes over, the old Prez pic comes down and the new Prez pic goes up. Always been that way.
I am speaking of video or still clips of past presidents. Clinton and Bush was there and NO OBAMA
It has always been that way Dean. You must have not been an avid X-Files watcher in the 90s. When Bush Jr became president, they made a joke of it, by playing the x-files tune when the camera shot an image of Bush on picture frame, inside the FBI headquarters. Republicans have always been made fun of (and sometimes for good reasons) in the 90s. Personally, I’m so sick of old fashioned partisan wars in America. It’s complete bs to me. But sticking to topic, X-Files (and many other shows on national television, except Fox News) has always been left… Read more »
I had no problem with them taking shots at Bush, while they at least thru in images of Bill Clinton here and there. But they specifically exclude any indication that Obama was part of the Government conspiracy. I did tune out after the season premier and haven’t watched another episode, I only come here to see what the ratings were
You really believe that? Wow you must live an x file!
What’s really went wrong with the ratings of The X-Files on FOX? Let’s see:
1) Wed. 8 p.m. is the wrong time for X-Files.
2) Very bad promotion. No one knows that the new season is back on Fox and still so many people doesn’t.
3) Two-years hiatus after such an epic cliffhanger
4) Belated announcement of the date of return – just ONE month before the premiere!! That’s nonsense!
5) Negative response from fake-Philes and ordinary viewvers after the first revival season.
That’s all is an epic fault for FOX marketing team. And they don’t care about it anymore.
Avid X-Files fan, disagree with everything you just said. 1. It’s the perfect time, The X-Files is event television if people were interested they would come. 2. Everyone I know who watched it last time knew it was on, most have just chosen to give up 3. Not an epic cliffhanger 4. Who care’s when they announce it – The Cloverfield Paradox was announced an hour and a bit before it was released 5. You can’t cry fake fans for when people lose interest in a show FOX have given a lot of love, to a man willing to flog… Read more »
I always loved when the X-Files was on Friday nights. But I don’t care if they just stream it on Netflix going forward, I’m gonna watch!
pls, just DON’T cancel the serie…if scully will not come back, than let reyes and doggett do it !!!!!!
If Reyes and Doggett are the choice, I say let it die. Lol
Too many characters and slow moving. Let Mulder & Scully carry the show with their interactions and more outdoors far out X Files like the past. Too much political wrangling killing the stories.
I’m trying to like it as much as the original, but this show seems to have lost it’s identity. The last episode about the Mandala/Mingele effet was definitely the best yet, as user Why Watch, has pointed out, before me.
Please, someone, where is the original X-files gone?
11-04 was a major disaster , i am starting to understand why Gillian A. no longer want to be a part of this show of the 90’s
The past two weeks when conspiracy theories take a back seat were great. Last night’s episode of the Mandala/Mingele effect was the best of the past two seasons.
bring back the monster of the week segments of the show chris. and kill the smoking man already
Bring in Season 12, 13, 14, 15 …
