Last May, fans of The CW’s sitcom, The Game, were upset to learn that the sitcom had been cancelled after three seasons on the air. Though there was some resolution in the last episode, it was hardly satisfying enough for devoted viewers. The web has recently been abuzz with news that the show is coming back but can you believe it?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of the long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, and Barry Floyd.
Even before the show was cancelled by the CW, there was talk about the possibility of Black Entertainment Television (BET) picking up the show for a fourth year. The cable-channel has been playing the sitcom repeats and the show fits in with their other programming.
In July, Mowry told TV Guide, “[BET chairman and CEO] Debra Lee is trying everything and anything to make this happen. The Game gets higher ratings than BET’s original programming, and we’ve heard there would be a huge marketing campaign. So I personally believe the show would be taken to another level.”
Unfortunately, there’s been little word of any real progress since then. Last week, rumors started circulating that a deal had been struck between BET and the show’s studio, CBS Television. Unfortunately, they turned out to be false.
Last night, Mowry put the rumors to rest. Via her Twitter account, she wrote, “I am so sorry to tell you this, this whole THE GAME thing getting picked up is NOT true! After talking to agents lawyers etc it is not true.” A deal may still happen but, for the moment, there isn’t one.
When or if a new deal is made, it remains to be seen how it would work. The contracts for the cast and creatives have lapsed so new ones would have to be negotiated. Because BET has less money to spend, they’d likely have to take pay cuts.
On top of that, some of those involved with the show have also moved on to other projects and may not be available. Hall is working on CBS’ new sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, Mowry has several projects in the works, and Akil is part of ABC’s new Cougar Town comedy with Courteney Cox Arquette.
What do you think? Would a fourth season of The Game be worth watching if the budget had to be cut and not all of the principals were involved?

I love The Game. I never even knew about it till it started playing on BET. I cant get enough of it. Me n my girls talk about the show as if we know the people, lol. It would be a great addition to the station, and we need more. They just got married, what happens next withe the baby, and with Kelly n Jason. The show is way 2 good to just end, and yes we need the same cast.
I don’t understand how they would do something like that if the fans what something why can’t people just be loyal and bring the show back there is ways of getting money for a show. That’s why we have all these business people doing these jobs. Please bring the show back you will be letting down a whole lot of fans.
The Game was one of the best tv shows I’ve ever come in contact with, I would love to see the show come back for a fourth season! But only if it was with the same cast members as before. I love that show and a lot of others do too! Please bring that show back!!!
I would LOVE to see The Game back on.
When The Game TV Series aired there was so many commericals within three minutes that kept this show alive, where are all of the sponsors now and why is it always such a problems to keep Great Black Entertainment alive and well. Please let our voices be heard and keep The Game TV Series alive. Thanks.
I would love to see The Game back on for a new season. I tuned in late once the re-runs were on BET and I was devastated to find out the show was canceled. So how I see it is: If these networks find money and air-space to broadcast these repetitive reality shows, I’m sure they can find the resources for this show. Come on BET make us proud, bring back The GAME!
I want to see,”The Game” come back on for a 4th season! But with the same cast members as before with the same chemistry as before that the show had! If the cast members changed i think so would the flavor of the show! Please make a way to bring back the show as it was before!!! Signed a loyal fan of, “The Game”!!!!
i dont care. just bring the show back
For all the people out there that don’t watch the Game are missing out on some good stuff and they have to watch the episodes from the first, second, and last season
I love the game and every person that plays in the show. I know the times that its on BET everyday and make sure I watch it even though I have seen every show millions of times but I still can’t get enough. Please bring it back with the same people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was disapointed and hurt to hear the sitcom “The Game” was cancelled. This sitcom had the most stellar acting from all actors and actresses I have ever seen in a long time. In such a depressed economy filled with such sadness, it was therapeutic for me to come home after a long chaotic day or week at work and sit to an episode of The Game. What in the world were the Powers-that-Be at CW thinking when they cancelled this sitcom? I would rather not believe the cancellation was due in part to race, but one can not help but to think again that race played a part in what appears to be an act in allowing some to reach their true potential while stunting the growth of others. Since the cancellation of “The Game,” I have tried to entertain other sitcoms. However, the new sitcoms simply do not capture or maintain my attention like The Game – quite frankly the acting is poor. I continue to watch the re-runs of The Game on BET with great hope that Debra Lee will finalize the licensing agreement with CBS and bring this masterpiece of an art back to the fans who all yearn and hope that even when the future looks bleek, some people can and will do the right thing and bring this sitcom back to people who enjoyed it and allow the actors to continue warming our hearts. Hopefully, there is a silver lining at the end of the tunel. We have all waited too long! BET please bring this agreement to fruition, not just for the fans, but because there is no doubt this will be a lucrative venture for the organization.
