NBC had big hopes for their all-drama Thursday night schedule. Unfortunately, the ratings have been dismal and now the network has cancelled their new drama, Allegiance, after five episodes.
On the Allegiance TV show, Katya and Mark O’Connor (Hope Davis and Scott Cohen) and their daughter Natalie (Margarita Levieva) are part of a dormant Russian sleeper cell that has just been reactivated. Their mission is to turn their son Alex (Gavin Stenhouse), an idealistic CIA analyst, into a spy. Others in the cast are Morgan Spector, Kenneth Choi, and Alex Peters.
The series debuted on February 5th to a dismal 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.98 million viewers. Then the numbers got even worse after that, hitting lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.32 million viewers.
NBC’s eight-episode mini-series The Slap has also been doing very poorly and recently relocated The Blacklist has been taking a beating opposite Scandal on ABC and with no lead-in support.
The network has now decided to pull the plug on Allegiance. They’re moving The Slap to 10pm for the remainder of its short run and will fill the 8pm timeslot with special editions of Dateline NBC.
It’s unclear how many episodes of Allegiance will be left unaired or when/if they will see the light of day. Whatever happens, it looks unlikely that the show’s relatively small audience will get any kind of closure.
What do you think? Did you like Allegiance on NBC? Do you think that the network should have cancelled this series? Should they air the remaining episodes?
I saw 11 epidodes, I want to see the resolution. It was a great series!
Allegiance is such a great show! I cannot believe you would pick the slap over this! I still can’t believe 2 broke girls is on and a show like this is cut. How can this happen?
Agreed! Such a classic, yet original, and intense show … finally! Then it’s canceled! 🙁
One of the best shows on TV period. This is the only reason I watched anything on NBC, other than sporting events. Guess I need to go back to my tried and true networks (all cable) that have excellent programming. Amazing, such lack of vision, not that surpring really, it is NBC after all…………..
I am very disappointed . I loved the show and I agree with the other that who ever is making these decision do not know what they are doing. Leaving reality show but canceling show like this one I absolutely STUPID. At least aire the remaining episode and give the viewers a closure. If not on nbc at least in Netflix .
It’s available on Hulu. The freeHulu, even. All 13 episodes.
It’s unbelievable this show was cancelled. The time slot may be why it didnt get the audience. It was well written and a very select cast, each one riveting. It has been compared to The Americans but that is only because it is close in subject matter. Kerri Russell is no Hope Davis.
I was disappointed when I realized Allegiance was abandoned after grumbling about the missed scheduling for several weeks. Fortunately I was able to watch the remainder of the first season on NBC.com. Now my hope is that TBS or AMC will resume its second season if it doesn’t work for NBC I do enjoy the Blacklist and am grateful that it will remain. I’m also enjoying American Odyssey, but its remaining episodes are dwindling. I’m grateful for getting some closure through your website, and that will be some consolation for future “failures” that seem like worth-whiles to me. Life goes… Read more »
People just don’t get how TV works or what every single show is made to do. Network television programming is created for ONE reason only – to make a profit. How does it do that? Primarily (though not exclusively) through selling advertising air time. What gets advertisers to pay for that air time? Viewers. It’s simple economics. The “quality” of the show is irrelevant to the equation – as evidenced by the number of viewers that total crap programming still pulls in. A quality show does not command a premium for its advertising. A show with huge viewership does. As… Read more »
You are exactly right. But also, these advertising rates are set based on ratings from Nielsen. Nielsen has come under scrutiny for being highly inaccurate, they sample a very small percentage of viewers and only viewers of their choosing. Some Nielsen participants actually have electronics connected that track what they watch, but most are simply sent a notebook and asked to log everything they watch and only what they watch in real time (Not DVR). So we get to watch whatever the Nielsen participants watch. People know something is wrong when great shows get canceled one after another and yet… Read more »
Hah, you bring up a great point that I was just actually wondering aloud about with my SO the other day – if the networks still make their decisions by “Neilsen Families” or if they’ve finally progressed to the point where DVR and other time-shifting views (including “illegal” torrenting) into consideration. Sadly, I suspect it’s still mostly the old-school approach. Given how many people are “cutting the cord” these days and going to solutions such as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, “On-Demand”, and other such modern solutions, it seems to me that any network still relying on Neilsen data is pathetically… Read more »
Sad to hear that NBC decided to cancel the show Alligance. This drama premiere was worth the anticipation of waiting a week to watch. I hope the network reconsider it decision and caters to the audiences desire to have the show back next season.
They should definitely make the remaining episodes available, even if through Netflix or something like that.
Imagination is a powerful thing. Alligence was a wonderful show comperable to the blacklist. It made you think like the divinci code and provide a thrill ride like Indiana jones. The missing link is what happens to the family and the extended family. With that the network has a goldmine. Unfortunately it seems lack of patience rules. I do hope the executive that dreamed this up is fired for lack of imagination and what is possible. Even we adults been an escape.
Great show. Do not cancel
Seriously? at least they shouldn`t let us see the happy end , I mean how can this awesome show less audience than Walking Dead ( a stupid serial reapeting the same action in every ******* season) or Game of Thrones ( another stupid serial with dragons and *****) I mean why the hell people wants to see only SciFi ?
Allegiance is great. And so is Blacklist! C’mon!
I greatly enjoyed Allegiance and its suspenseful episodes and am disappointed that the show is cancelled. I shall be left forever in a cliffhanger :((
I thought Allegiance was a great show and like many of your other viewers think that cancelling this kind of show but continuing stupid reality shows is a reflection of the idiots that watch that type of garbage but you continue to feed it to them and deprive your intelligent viewers of good drama shows. Ratings are overrated on many shows.
