It’s been quite awhile since NBC had a successful drama on Sunday nights. Will American Odyssey change that and become a hit in the ratings? Cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
On the American Odyssey TV show, an international cover-up explodes when the lives of a female Special Forces soldier, a disillusioned corporate lawyer, and a political activist from a privileged family unexpectedly collide. The cast includes Anna Friel, Peter Facinelli, Jake Robinson, Jim True-Frost, Sadie Sink, Omar Ghazaoui, Nate Mooney, Elena Kampouris, Daniella Pineda, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Treat Williams.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
6/30 update: NBC has cancelled the series after one season.
Final season averages: 0.54 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.96 million total viewers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the American Odyssey TV series? Would you like to see it cancelled or renewed for a second season?
I’ve lost confidence after the cancellation of Revolution, Allegiance, and State of Affairs. Not wasting anymore time on dramas with NBC. They’re just going to cancel it anyway.
This is one of the few shows my husband and I both watch. Please keep it on the air or switch to one of the other stations TBS, WGN, FOX, TNT.
I think this is by far the best show on TV. The BEST and I have over 200 channels
I think the show is great and very well done. Just the fact that it stimulates such debate as above is a testimonial to it’s acting and writing. Television needs many more shows of this ilk for those of us who believe that television is now the best medium out there to enjoy in the context of presenting interesting and convoluted story lines that actually have a plot worth following put forth by producers who understand the medium and hopefully by networks that actually care what they broadcast to serve a more sophisticated audience. This is the only way to… Read more »
It’s a good show, but NBC will cancel, which is why they don’t get the best of ratings. No one wants to waste their time watching and liking a show when they know NBC will cancel it on them. Horrible time slot.
I love the show! It’s like reading a good book where many characters are included, yet all are a necessary part of the whole story. My adult son who hates how stupid television is, likes it- I had him watch and now he’s hooked. I would like to see it given a chance on another night. It’s hard to get the audience on 10pm Sunday night. Please give this show a chance.
The many layers of the plot line, I think, work somewhat to the detriment of American Odyssey. Some viewers would be lost trying to keep up. Having said that, I believe most patriotic Americans want to see Odelle reunited with her family.
I agree with you. I find it distracting to jump between so many storylines. They’ve turned this show into a sort of pulp fiction – albeit with the storylines being more cohesive. Still, having to advance four different storylines, all within an hour, progresses each one too slowly, IMO.
American Odyssey leaves much to be desired.
The story line could be good however I find it
convoluted. The acting is weak and dialogue
dull. I am plodding thru just to see if it will get
exciting! A waste if renewed.
I really like this show. I think the characters are interesting. It is suspenseful and relevant in today’s world.
I agree. I discovered it while on vacation this week and have watched 6 episodes. It is well done, acting very good and suspenseful. Hope they have a 2nd season!
Agree. It’s well acted, and I don’t think it is too complicated if you watch the few couple of shows. Suspenseful and hope to see a second season. I would recommend a different time other than a Sunday evening before school and work the next day.
Renew!! Story lines are plausible. There is probably a lot of reality in the plot. It is also topical. The characters are believable.
I think the show is good.
I’m still watching it, but I will tell you that there are many shows I used to love, and have quit watching because of Hollywood’s fanatical agenda to push acceptance of the gay lifestyle down the audience’s throat.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that great drop in viewership comprises many evangelicals. You can say, “Well, good riddance to those bigots! We don’t need them.”, but, like it or not, Hollywood needs them for shows like this to survive because this is the type of show that they (the “right”) would otherwise be attracted to.
Maybe you’re right, i don’t know. I guess the network does their market research and would probably have some idea about this. When i first read your comment, the part implying that the show was “shoving the gay lifestyle down the audience’s thread,” i was confused, not sure if i was reading comments on American Odyssey because i didn’t remember any gay characters in the show. i stopped and thought, and then i remembered the transgender character. Out of all the characters in the show, almost all are straight, so the “shoving down the audience’s throat” phrase seemed like an… Read more »
Judy, Quite a thoughtful response. First, let me say that I consider myself more of a Buddhist, in terms of my view on life, but I was, unfortunately, raised in an evangelical home. So, I was merely expressing a view that I am all too familiar with, but not completely reflective of my own view, as the possible reason for loss of audience. I wanted to address your statement, “I suspect many of the people who would think one transgender character in the show is having the gay lifestyle shoved down their throats …” It’s not so much that one… Read more »
It’s nice to see a thoughtful discussion like this. Ron, the GLAAD publication that you site says that, of all of the series regulars on TV this season, only 3.9% were lesbian, gay, or bisexual. Is this really an overwhelming number? Four out of every 100 characters? Based on my viewing, I would also say that very very few are even the main characters. Is this really a big problem? Apparently for some, it is. People who don’t like gay people are going to be offended by the mere mention of the word, nevermind the idea that these people should… Read more »
Jason, Thanks for contributing. You make an interesting point about the % of characters in a program that are gay. But, I feel that misses the point because you’re comparing LGBT characters to the number of the entire cast as opposed to the number of shows carrying a gay character. The latter addresses the point of, “can I watch ANY show without feeling like I’m being PC schooled?” Maybe you can relate if I put it in other terms. Knowing how the left froths at the mouth every time the name “Rush Limbaugh” or “Dick Cheney” is spoken, how would… Read more »
Ron, okay, so first off, your question makes some pretty big assumptions: 1. That all gay characters/people are clones of each other, all sounding the same with the same view. Really? That’s how you see them? The real gay people I know are not all the same by a longshot. 2. That I’m this big liberal. Actually no. I’m pretty middle of the road. To your first point about the percentage, let’s do the math. If gay/bi/trans characters make up 4% of the main characters on television shows and there are roughly 350 scripted series (between network, cable, and streaming… Read more »
(Post out of sequence because there’s no “Reply” after your last post. ) On your first point, no, I don’t see them as clones, which is why I do watch some shows with gays and others no. The main ones I rule out are the over-the-top flamboyant type whose behavior is in essence, “Hey, everybody! Look at me. I’ve arrived. Please everyone make me the center of your attention.” Think Ross the Intern on the former Leno show, or the Cameron Tucker character on Modern Family. A really well done gay character is Rusty Beck on Major Crimes. On your… Read more »
Ron, Jason, i too appreciate these thoughtful responses and exchange of opinions and information. i learned some things i didn’t know that interest me. Ron, thank you for clarifying that you weren’t referring to this one particular show but to the feeling that too many shows present gay characters as part of the regular or recurring casts, and that it’s not any particular show but rather the trend that feels as if exposure to it and encouragement to accept it is being shoved down the throats of those who don’t like it. I think i did understand that you meant… Read more »
Thanks Judy and Jason for a very insightful and respectful conversation. I must say that not only is society undergoing some pivotal changes, but my own views are forcibly undergoing some of the same throes. Now, obviously I am not averse to change. I have gone from evangelical to Mormon and finally to Zen Buddhist, over the span of 25 years. During all this time, my political views have remained conservative with a slight lean toward libertarian. I am not blind to how things are changing, and it pains me, as a conservative, to see that individualism will necessarily change… Read more »
This is like so l shows, no advertizing on them, the station works to get it on and then forgets it, this is becoming so common, they expect these shows to sell themselves. This show has potential but the writing is a little weak and no real forward motion is noticed, please don’t give up on this show
I agree with you and it’s sad that people are so judgmental I love this show and hope to see a season 2
Yeah, I know what you mean about people being judgmental. It’s just like all the people jumping all over the Duggar family over something as trivial as incest, which, within 50 years, will be accepted as normal as the gay lifestyle. People should just drop any sense of moral outrage and let the orgy begin. We don’t need no stinkin’ moral fabric of society. It’s a good thing that you and I are so enlightened and open-minded.
Ron, what does homosexuality have to do with the Duggar family? i don’t know much about that situation but doesn’t it have something to do with the molestation of children? Why would acceptance of gays as normal people who live their lives and mind their own business, who are attracted to the same gender instead of the opposite gender and would marry and raise families, work at their jobs, enjoy their leisure time with cooking or gardening or going to sports events, owning pets, etc etc, and contributing to the moral fabric of society by treating others respectfully and kindly,… Read more »
I think you’re missing my broader point. Once one perversion is accepted as normal, the bar keeps lowering. So, now that gay relationships and marriage are “acceptable”, would it be acceptable for two adult brothers to have a sexual relationship or marry? You really can’t respond with a reason other than those used by traditionalists to repudiate gay relationships among those not related. You can’t use the “ick” factor, or it’s unnatural, and you can’t use the excuse that inbreeding might result. So, I guess you must be ok with that, right? And, if you’re ok with that, why not… Read more »
Years ago, people of different races weren’t allowed to marry and opponents made the same arguments against mixed race marriages and felt they were perverse. “Where will it stop?” I guess they are okay with you? Because you are married to someone of mixed heritage? Seems like a big double standard.
It’s great that you have a gay friend who married you and your wife. Have you told him that you think his love is perverse? Have you told him that marriage is for you but you’re against him being able to be marry someone he loves?
Difference is, marriage between man and woman is natural, including between races. So, you’re comparing apples to oranges. Because you blur moral equivalency, and you have no boundaries, I’m sure the distinction eludes you. As for my gay friends, they know what I think. I am a believer in, “love the sinner, but hate the sin”, just as I would with any friend who is an alcoholic or drug addict. BTW, do you tell all your addict friends that you think their lifestyle is perverse? Have you told them, it’s ok to have your sugar addiction or whatever addiction you… Read more »
By the way, Jason, even Dolce & Gabbana have come out against all of this: http://fortune.com/2015/03/16/dolce-gabbana-marriage-equality-debate/
So, my view is not just the view of the “bigot”, but is shared by many gays themselves.
When this thread began, I thought you were someone who was capable of a rational discussion but it didn’t take long for the same old tired discrimination talk to come out. Sad. Conversation with you is pointless.
Btw, I didn’t call you a bigot but clearly you have no problem wearing the title.
I notice you didn’t address any of the points, but simply repeated my line back at me about “conversation with you is pointless.” Great wit there.
I didn’t bother responding to them because there was no point. You seem to be very comfortable in your beliefs and are condescending so there’s no point in wasting my time further. Thankfully for the majority of us, you’re in a dwindling minority with your beliefs. Gay characters are here to stay. Gay marriage will soon be nationwide. In time, gay people will have full equality. And happily, there’s nothing you or your kind can do about it so, “conversation with you is pointless.”
Btw, thanks for the compliment on my great wit.
Because “there is no point” or you have no valid points to make? Please, I would love to hear if gay relationship/marriage between two consenting adult brothers is ok with you? Why or why not? It’s a simple question, unless the answer exposes a hypocrisy in your beliefs.
I agree 100% with what you said. People who don’t see this blatant agenda are flat out blind. It has infiltrated every…single…show. I am sick of it. I have NOTHING against LGBT, but shoving this agenda into each and every thing is enough already. Art is supposed to be a thing of freedom of creativity, not forced to use for agendas and “inclusion”. For a group of people who make up less than 5% of the population they sure do think they deserve alot of attention and promotion. Where is the goth and metal heads or other”alternative” lifestyle people in… Read more »
“I have NOTHING against LGBT” (people as long as I don’t have to see them, hear about them, think about them, etc.).
“I have NOTHING against LGBT” (people as long as I don’t have to see them, hear about them, think about them, etc.).
Nothing Ehhh ??? sure seems like “EVERYTHING” to me !!!
SAD !!
Start cancelling those crappy reality shows! There are such few great shows with substance these days that reality tv is taking over. This show is awesome and needs to stick around!
I like this show. I like the actors and their characters. I think people quit watching because the critics were saying it was going to be cancelled. Perhaps if networks kept shows on that had substance, people would quit turning to reality TV. On the other hand, I think people are tired of watching shows that end up cancelled, so they watch reality TV. I now think of shows as long movies and enjoy them for as long as they last.
Very good show. I love it.
