For the most part, FOX has really been struggling this season. When it comes to new shows, Empire is a hit and Gotham’s doing okay but Utopia, Mulaney, Gracepoint, and Red Band Society were dismal failures in the ratings and have already been cancelled. How’s Backstrom doing? Will it survive to see a second season?
On Backstrom, an offensive, irascible yet brilliant detective (Rainn Wilson) is brought back from exile to run Portland Police Bureau’s Special Crimes Unit. The rest of the cast includes Genevieve Angelson, Dennis Haysbert, Kristoffer Polaha, Page Kennedy, Beatrice Rosen, and Thomas Dekker.
With American Idol as a lead-in, the series debuted on January 22nd with a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.98 million viewers. That was an okay start but there wasn’t much serious competition on the other networks.
In week two, Backstrom had to start competing with Scandal on ABC and the ratings dropped more than 30%. In week three, NBC’s The Blacklist moved to Thursdays at 9pm and Backstrom dropped another 30% or so once again, falling to a 1.0 in the demo and 3.64 million.
In week four, the FOX series bounced back to a 1.2 in the demo and 4.39 million. Last week’s installment took another big tumble and Backstrom landed at a 0.9 in the demo and 3.54 million.
It’s pretty clear that, while Backstrom may have some devoted viewers, it’s not priority viewing for most people on Thursday nights. It’s pretty consistently in fourth place in its 9pm timeslot and is now FOX’s lowest-rated drama.
With numbers like these, it’s hard to imagine that FOX will renew Backstrom for a second season. FOX has some serious schedule problems but this show doesn’t seem to be a solution. There are eight episodes left in the season (only five are scheduled) so Backstrom has some time to prove itself with better ratings. This seems unlikely but sometimes miracles do happen. Backstrom could certainly use one.
But, what do you think? Do you like Backstrom? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew this series for a second season? Would you change anything to attract more viewers?
LOVE BACKSTROM!!! Don’t cancel it!! The chemistry is great and the story line is getting much better. Give it a chance please!
Backstroke is not your cookie cutter drama and it’s not the garbage reality shows that America seems to love. Sadly that’s why critics down it. It is a great show with good characters and storylines. Let’s keep this show on and give good shows like this there due. It’s time for real TV again and not these carnival barker shows that make up reality TV
I love this show too:-) let’s give it another season!
Fox Fox Fox
plz don’t cancel Backstrom!!!!!! You can see this great show had a very passionate following. If the ratings aren’t good enough could you put it on at different time??? I’ll bet through the history of TV, some shows that started off “slow” became big hits??? Backstrom is special please give it another season!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Die Backstrom! Die!
I’ve been a fan of whodunnit/police procedural shows since the days of Johnny Dollar and Sam Spade…ON THE RADIO! And I can tell you this IS going to be considered a classic, one day! If Fox is stupid enough to dump it, someone else will snatch it up…it’ll be a monster hit…and the Fox exec who axed it will be the program director of an AM radio station in Omaha!
Love this show. Please keep it.
Please keep it on. I love it!! It’s awesome!!
Please leave this show we love it
Keep!!!
I LOVE Backstrom. It is just starting to gain fans. I am spreading the word. Everyone I know who has seen it LOVES it. It will grow. KEEP IT ON TV!!!!!
Great Show, there’s no other cop show like it on TV. His character makes the show.
I really enjoy the show. Its different from other cop/detective shows. Every character has its place and doesn’t just focus on the main character all the time. I would renew the show as I feel there is potential in Backstrom.
Me too! Does watching it on Hulu count? Backstrom is my favorite new show.
Good show love the dialog
Keep Backstrom on tv! It’s the best show on now and the only one I look forward to watching. I stream it on hulu every week.
