Between the competition from other channels and start time delays due to sports programming overruns, CBS has some real challenges on Sunday nights, particularly in the 10pm timeslot. Both The Mentalist (ended) and CSI (possibly cancelled) struggled this season. How’s newcomer Battle Creek been doing? Will it be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
Battle Creek revolves around two mismatched law enforcement officers — Detective Russ Agnew (Dean Winters) and FBI Special Agent Milton Chamberlain (Josh Duhamel) — who have polar opposite views of the world and end up being partners. The rest of the cast includes Janet McTeer, Kal Penn, Aubrey Dollar, and Edward Fordham Jr.
The series got off to a poor start with a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.92 million viewers. That was a lower demo number than either CSI or Mentalist had hit this season. The viewership was pretty bad for a CBS show too.
In week two, the ratings for Battle Creek fell to a 0.83 in the demo with 6.93 million, a decline of 17% and 13% respectively. The numbers have gotten even worse in subsequent weeks — falling as low as a 0.7 rating and 5.58 million viewers.
Based on the ratings, there doesn’t seem to be any reason for CBS to renew Battle Creek for a second season. The numbers are just too low.
On the positive side, there are four episodes left after tonight’s airing. It looks like the network will let them air with the finale currently set for May 24th.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Battle Creek TV show on CBS? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Is it a better show than what the ratings seem to indicate?
Keep it! It’s getting good. I DVR the show as well…. so I’m unsure how they actually can tell who watches this show. I’m enjoying it and will keep watching it.
I DVR this show and love it and I’m not in the target audience. Much older.

This is the best tv so far.
please, keep it.
I love it. It will be the next “HOUSE”.
Always watch this show. Didn’t at first, got off to a bad start, poor scripts, lighting, sets, But: each week has been consistently better. If they would have used some of the later shows sooner,it would jave been a hit immediately.
please please KEEP Battlecreek.
yo fanboys, remember to turn the lights off and lock the doors when you leave, cause this party was over even before it started
I like this show and would like to see it renewed for another season. Why? Well, it is different and I would like to see a real friendship and trust develop between Josh and Dean, not to mention the cast. I like the fact that it is not too violent and there seems to be questions that have to be answered. I think it deserves a second season.
Yes! Battle Creek is an excellent series with great writing. Please renew this.
Yes, Battle Creek is one of the few new shows that my wife and I actually enjoy. We also like Scorpion, Elementary, Hawaii 5-0, Blue Bloods, and the late departed Mentalist. The NCIS shows are generally good as well (especially the original one). Most of those (except for Scorpion and NCIS) are apparently on the bubble. Very sad. I truly wonder if the ratings capture all the people who DVR shows (we do). All of these shows have good characters, good plots (generally), good actors, and (generally) some intelligence in the dialogue. Of course Elementary and Mentalist are tops in… Read more »
Check out Death in Paradise, Pascel aand Diazel, George Gentley , PBS, BBC; for a refreshing intelligent look at cops and robbers. Not the usual Harrywood tripe. I like the Mentalist ad Elementary, but the fact a show carries quality of craft and an intellect rating above age 9 leaves it open to certain death.
“The fact a show carries quality of craft and an intellect rating above age 9 leaves it open to certain death.”
Now, that was a funny line! Sad that it is close to the truth!
I enjoy the show Battle Creek. I’m curious to know if the REALLY know how many people watch a show? Is it just based on random Nielson ratings? Since I DVR the show wouldn’t providers like DirecTV be able to collect DVR data and give it to the networks? Even in secret? It’s hard to imagine they can’t track what you record on their device that’s connected to the internet and their satellite?
For shows like this on free OTA TV though, they can never truly know how many out there are watching.
