Bones aired its series finale last night after 12 seasons. But what about a revival? Recently, creator Hart Hanson spoke with Deadline about a possible reunion for the FOX TV series.
The long-running crime drama followed the partnership between Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan (Emily Deschanel), a part-time novelist and a highly-skilled forensic anthropologist, and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz). The cast also included Michaela Conlin, T.J. Thyne, Eric Millegan, Tamara Taylor, Michaela Conlin, John Francis Daley, Patricia Belcher, and David Greenman.
In the interview, Hanson said a Bones reunion would be a lot of fun:
You never know what people will say yes to, and getting everybody together again, getting the band together would be a lot of fun. I’ll say this: There are no big personal things to get over. To get together again, and I would be the last person to speak for everyone, but in a couple years or something, it might be a lot of fun to get the band back together again and see what we could do.”
He later mentioned that if there were a reunion, it might be something like a movie:
I imagine it would be…well, you just don’t know, do you? We just don’t know. I have no idea, but I’m going to say right now it would seem more likely that a one long-form thing would happen. But, again, you just don’t know, and by the way, there may be no appetite for it. You know shows…
And what would the revival be about? Hanson said he doesn’t have a specific idea but he does have notes from over the years:
I don’t have that, but I have what the writers and most of the people on Bones know I refer to as my bin. I have a bin with stuff in it, but no, there’s no script, there’s no story idea.
There’s notes and notions in a bin that you just keep over the years. It’s like having a shoe box full of scraps of paper that you write down ideas on, and it’ll be put away on an external hard drive — I won’t look at it unless someday someone says, do you have anything, and then I’ll go and see if we do, or we’ll come up with something new because you just don’t know. You just don’t know.
And they may never ask. You know, you know as well as I do there are shows that are big and noisy and popular, and then they go off the air and it’s shocking how quickly they drop off the map, and we don’t know if we’re one of those or not.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Bones? Did you enjoy the finale? Would you watch a reunion?
For the past few weeks, I have been watching Bones all day Monday through Wednesday on We tv and BBC America. I am loving this!!! It’s definitely time for a reboot.
Thanks so much for making this retired civil servant’s days now. Please get the gang back together for a trilogy!!
I love bones…compared to other showed that are aired now..2020 I don’t even watch any of them I watch all the bones series… I bought the pack …I wish they would come back with many more seasons…I am a fan..
Fox needs to put this back on…
I have the entire 12 season box set and still continue to watch it. I’ve never come across another show like this as much as I enjoyed Bones. I wish Fox would’ve kept it going. Even if it was like a Bones mini series of each character. Like ‘Bones – Brennan, Bones – Hodgins’ etc.
I don’t think there was a huge amount told about the characters. I think they just gave a snippet of each.
We have watched every episode and would love to see them comeback in a series or mini serie
We miss them all ,like family there’s nothing like them anywhere . Come on Mr. Hanson give us some good news throw us a Bone(s).
I miss them all so much. My husband and I would look forward every week to get to watch the next episode. There’s not another show that compares. Please do bring them all back.
Now you’ve done it! I will spend all my time waiting for a revival or maybe better yet a movie with the gang! Please make it happen..
I loved the show and would watch an incarnation that comes along
I would watch a movie, reunion or the show on another network! I love agent Booth!
Tempie and Seeley and squints together again, oh my, yes!!
Perhaps an annual tv movie would be the best way to revisit. It would not be Bones if the anchor actors were not available. Now is the time to get everyone to commit to an annual movie, before they make other commitments. Even Boreanaz might be open to this approach.
I loved the show and was a faithful fan, but was very disappointed in the series finale. It felt lame to me–i.e. Brennan has a brain issue which “miraculously” cleared up on its own? Really? Seemed like a device to allow the interns to “solve” the crime using her techniques and give them screen time. I wanted to love the finale, but just didn’t. Nevertheless, I would watch a reunion, but as someone else has said, David B. is not big on reunions for any series.
It was pretty good. If you wanted lame, Castles did that last May, the worst ending for a show ever.
we would definitely watch a reunion… we miss the show already
I say YES to reunion. It would be interesting to see what storyline they would come up with, and what characters would be willing to come back, barring any commitments they may already have. Put your thinking caps on writers.
Well plan on doing a reunion without Boreanaz. He has stated that if a Bones reunion was to occur, he would not participate. He believes in going forward and not back.
