As Tom Kane continues to try to keep a grip on his city and life, the Boss TV series struggles to attract an audience. Will Boss be cancelled or renewed for a third season of Starz? That’s an even bigger challenge thank Kane’s.
Airing on Friday nights, Boss revolves around the Mayor of Chicago (Kelsey Grammer) who’s recently been diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disorder. Determined to remain in charge, he conceals the disease from everyone around him except his physician. The Starz TV show also features the talents of Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson, Troy Garity, Rotimi, Jonathan Groff, and Sanaa Lathan.
It’s no secret that the TV series struggled in its first season. Despite sporting some top talent, the viewers and ratings just weren’t there. Luckily for the cast and crew, the show was renewed for a second season weeks before the show even premiered. Had the cable channel waited to see how well Boss would perform before making a decision, it’s hard to believe we’d be seeing a second season now.
Last month, at The Television Critics Association press tour, Boss showrunner Farhad Safinia said, “I am completely aware of what the numbers are, and I’m heartbroken… It’s one of those things where you’d like more people to see what you’re doing… I do hope the audience comes to see it so we can tell the entire story. I think we just have to work on that assumption that we will get to do it.”

The ratings were so low for the first season of Boss that they’re often very difficult to locate. We do know that Boss premiered last October to 659,000 viewers and by the middle of the run had fallen to 250,000.
Season two certainly hasn’t been bringing any better ratings. The August 24th installment drew just 229,000 viewers and the season has averaged only 310,000. Earlier this year, the second season of Spartacus averaged 1.35 million on Friday nights in the same timelot.
It seems highly unlikely that Starz will be bringing back Boss for a third season. These numbers are just incredibly small for an expensive scripted drama.
On the positive side, Safinia has indicated that they plot each season like a movie so that each has a beginning, middle, and end. While it’s very likely that Boss will be cancelled, at least the show’s loyal viewers will be given at least some kind of resolution by the end of the season. Season two wraps on October 19th.
What do you think? Do you like the Boss TV series? Why do you think it hasn’t caught on with a bigger audience? Should it be renewed for a third season or cancelled?
The unfortunate side of Boss potentially being cancelled is that it shows how ignorant we as a nation have become. When award winning television is unimaginative at best, excellent scripted dramas like Boss fall by the wayside due to lack of interest by the general public. Read a book America, and stop watching mindless garbage. Eschew it from your life and watch quality television, not the mindless dribble that pass for entertainment.

DON’T CANCEL BOSS! Love that show. I too was shocked there were no Emmy nominations. Kelsey Grammar has made me forget he was ever Frazier.
This is the BEST show on TV bar none. I think Kelsey Grammar receives less attention in the hollywood community than others because he’s a conservative (politically speaking) He doesn’t flaunt it but in H-wood, word gets out fast. I fully expected this show to be nominated for an emmy award, but too many libs probably wouldn’t give Grammar his due. It will be so very sad if this drama is not renewed. The story line and acting talent are superb.
Too bad this show was not on HBO. It is the most interesting drama on television and I am saddened to hear that it will not be picked up for further viewing. The acting is superb and I was quite shocked it was not nominated for an Emmy. The entire cast and writing is far beyond what else is offered on any primetime station. Kudos to this fine cast and crew, you will be missed.
I honestly believe this show is the best thing on television. I am completely hooked and am saddened that it may not return. I can’t help but feel Starz has failed in its ability to attract the kind of audiences that other shows of this caliber are attracting on other networks. I feel that if HBO, Showtime or AMC were to pick it up, this show could really take off. Every aspect of this show is so top notch, it just seems that many people haven’t even heard of it!
I’m actually surprised that they would cancel this show, but at the same time I’m not
Surprised, lets face fact, “Boss” isn’t filled with sex and blood, it’s more thought prevoking and doesn’t cater to the kind of people that watch Spartacus, people short attention span, and like to see fake boobs sex and sword fighting in their underwear.
Please don’t cancel “Boss” ratings have been going up,slowly but surely.
Love the show. My husband and I watch it on-demand Sunday with our morning coffee. Please bring it back for more seasons. It’s one of the only shows we watch together besides sports, food and home improvement shows. Most everything else on tv is crap!!!
Fabulous. Takes an educated audience to appreciate this ver fine program
I’ve never been so invested in a tv show and its characters. BOSS is amazingly written, produced and directed. People don’t get moved anymore by television. I didnt know it was possible to get jolted. BOSS jolted me… it moves you…you feel something after watching every episode! If there was something the fans of BOSS could do, to keep this show on air, you better believe we would do it. NONE of us want to see this show cancelled. Please!
Great show — clearly one of the best on TV. Would love to see a season three!
I only have starz for the boss series. Great show. Maybe it should be moved to a differe.nt night
Love love love it!!!! So smart, so well done…..please renew for a 3rd season!!!!!
I agree it should be on a regular channel. Many people don’t have Starz. I’m born and raised in Chgo And I don’t know how or where they get their info but it’s very factual. If it’s pulled I bet Mike Madigan had something to do with it. (Dem. Speaker of the house) He and Daley pulled all the strings. C,mon CBS,NBC andABC
An excellent drama
How could you even consider cancelling this show. IT IS AN OUTSTANDING drama with
excellent acting.
I’m from Chicago, and had this series been around during Dailey’s 20 years in office, it would have been far more relevant. However, the new mayor a born bred I-Banker who is running Chicago like finely tuned assembly line and he will make cuts where necessary regardless of passed considerations or relationships. Moreover, there can be only room for one Chicago show and it’ll most likely be “Chicago Fire”, especially since the pilot had Rahm Emanuel cameo as mayor himself. I love the show “The Boss”, and it comes a very near 2nd to “The Chicago Code” who for some… Read more »
