As Tom Kane continues to try to keep a grip on his city and life, the Boss TV series struggles to attract an audience. Will Boss be cancelled or renewed for a third season of Starz? That’s an even bigger challenge thank Kane’s.
Airing on Friday nights, Boss revolves around the Mayor of Chicago (Kelsey Grammer) who’s recently been diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disorder. Determined to remain in charge, he conceals the disease from everyone around him except his physician. The Starz TV show also features the talents of Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson, Troy Garity, Rotimi, Jonathan Groff, and Sanaa Lathan.
It’s no secret that the TV series struggled in its first season. Despite sporting some top talent, the viewers and ratings just weren’t there. Luckily for the cast and crew, the show was renewed for a second season weeks before the show even premiered. Had the cable channel waited to see how well Boss would perform before making a decision, it’s hard to believe we’d be seeing a second season now.
Last month, at The Television Critics Association press tour, Boss showrunner Farhad Safinia said, “I am completely aware of what the numbers are, and I’m heartbroken… It’s one of those things where you’d like more people to see what you’re doing… I do hope the audience comes to see it so we can tell the entire story. I think we just have to work on that assumption that we will get to do it.”

The ratings were so low for the first season of Boss that they’re often very difficult to locate. We do know that Boss premiered last October to 659,000 viewers and by the middle of the run had fallen to 250,000.
Season two certainly hasn’t been bringing any better ratings. The August 24th installment drew just 229,000 viewers and the season has averaged only 310,000. Earlier this year, the second season of Spartacus averaged 1.35 million on Friday nights in the same timelot.
It seems highly unlikely that Starz will be bringing back Boss for a third season. These numbers are just incredibly small for an expensive scripted drama.
On the positive side, Safinia has indicated that they plot each season like a movie so that each has a beginning, middle, and end. While it’s very likely that Boss will be cancelled, at least the show’s loyal viewers will be given at least some kind of resolution by the end of the season. Season two wraps on October 19th.
What do you think? Do you like the Boss TV series? Why do you think it hasn’t caught on with a bigger audience? Should it be renewed for a third season or cancelled?
Absolutely my FAVORITE show. Bring it back again. I even host watch parties!
I am also shocked that ratings are not wonderful. It just goes to show that a bunch of
ignorant reality show seeking watchers don’t appreciate a mentally challenging drama filled with all the qualities that mature thoughtful adults wish to find. Keep the series to continue what has started an addiction for true entertainment at its best!
I look forward to seeing BOSS every Friday. It’s the only thing on tv right now that keeps my full attention. I love this show. It is breath taking. I think the show does not get enough advertisement. Maybe consider better marketing strategies. Please bring back a third season. I need to see this show every week.
I live to watch “BOSS”, every is Friday evening. Kelsey Grammer is delicious in his role as Tom Kane, Mayor of Chicago! It’s easily the best series on TV. Renew the series for Season 3!!! “It’s logical”, as Spock might say. (Star Trek) Star Trek was NOT renewed, years ago, and that angered many fans! Don’ t let this be the next Star Trek, to be carelessly cancelled…another great Season is in order! So let it be written, so let it be DONE!
We agree! Our Friday nights are planned around Boss. Some of the best acting on any show. We watch every show at least twice just to be sure we soak up every juicy tidbit.
Lest I remind the “annointed ones”, who decide the fates of TV Shows, that Cheers was 75 in the ratings, after season 1. Season 2 wasn’t spectacular, if I recall, but the show ‘took off’ after that & was a huge hit! Please have the wisdom to renew for Season 3. Kelsey Grammer is spectacular, intense, and moving in his role. The rest of the cast is electric. The script is awesome. All other aspects of the show are first class. More advertising needed, and start showing Season 1 on broadcast TV outlets, (ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. Don’t quit on… Read more »
Please keep Boss! It’s the best show on TV! Give it a chance to keep picking up viewers!!
Please, please, please. It’s too good to not return.
This is the best show. Watch it if you haven’t. PLEASE RENEW FOR A THIRD SEASON
I watch most of my television online. Early in the morning before the family is awake, before the phone begins to ring is when I watch Boss on my laptop. It is so detailed and and draws you into the story, you just don’t want to be disturbed. Are you counting the online viewers? The people that watch when we get the time? This show is much too good to be cancelled. I think your audience just might be larger than you think. Television will soon be the dinosaur in the room. I seldom watch anything on television because, it… Read more »
PLEASE RENEW FOR THIRD SEASON
This is by far one of the best shows on TV. Maybe it needs to be marketed better. It should not only be renewed for a season 3 but for a season 4, 5, 6, etc. Get the idea. Love the characters, the story, the acting, the writing. If you can’t extend it on cable put in on a network where sponsors will help finance it. Either way, don’t let it die. It’s a winner!!!!
The most awesome show ever! Definitely rooting for season 3
Please keep BOSS! Everyone who has watched it, can’t get enough. Boss is so superbly acted, written, and directed, it should have been won every Emmy award out there. Please do not disappoint fans this early. Just promote it and watch millions of viewers grab on for the ride. Absolutely the best show TV has to offer, and much better than most theatrical movies in recent memory. Hopefully awaiting season three!
Im shocked to learn that the ratings are low. I have several series that I watch every season. Two of my absolute favorites are, Sons Of Anarchy and of course BOSS. Also Boardwalk Empire, Justified, Newsroom, Magic City and I watched from start to finish and really loved Damages. If there is any way to keep Boss on the air, I really, really, really hope they figure it out. There is so much to watch for in a season 3. We have to know what happens after the governors goes to zajak. And we need to see Kane get at… Read more »
It is GREAT! I’ve seen nothing like it!
This is one of if not my favorite show I can’t believe the numbers are so low the show truly is gripping an I hope that even though the ratings are low it gets picked up for a third season. If not ill watch the seasons over again.
