Christian Slater just can’t catch a break when it comes to television. My Own Worst Enemy was cancelled by NBC in 2009 and ABC’s the forgotten was canned in 2010. Now, FOX has cancelled his new sitcom, Breaking In, after one short season.
Breaking In follows a team of misfits who run a high-tech security operation and take extreme (often questionable) measures to sell their services. The comedy stars Slater, Bret Harrison, Odette Yustman, Trevor Moore, and Alphonso McAuley.
The sitcom debuted on April 6th to a healthy 3.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.82 million viewers. Those look like solid numbers when viewed alone but are far less impressive when you consider that the series lost more than 50% of the lead-in audience from American Idol.

In week two, Breaking In lost 26% of its premiere audience, scoring a 2.6 rating and 7.79 million total viewers. Weeks three and four dropped as well. Last Wednesday’s episode scored a 2.4 in the demo and 7.07 million. That represents a retention of only 36% from the American Idol lead-in.
Despite the fact that Breaking In has a better average than already-renewed Raising Hope and Bob’s Burgers, FOX has decided to cancel the TV series after one season and seven episodes. It would seem that, despite what some may believe, lead-in retention does matter.
The remaining two episodes of Breaking In will air tonight and next Wednesday, May 18th. Hopefully Slater will have better luck next time — perhaps on a CBS series?
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a second season of Breaking In? Why do you think the TV series didn’t catch on?

I am truly pissed off that they cancelled this show. My 72 year old mother even liked it. I am really getting sick and tired of these networks cancelling shows before they even have a chance. I am so sick of reality TV! I live enough reality of my own I don’t need to watch anyone else.
It was a good show to watch and unwind too really really enjoyed watching it wish it wasn’t being canceled. It was nice to see something different for a change instead of the same old crap. Enjoyed every part Slater was wonderful.
Also, who cares if the people watching “Karaoke” Idol watch Breaking In or not? If they’ve got different tastes, then they’ve got different tastes, that’s all. At least I won’t have to watch the last minute of that lame show while waiting for Breaking In to start anymore.
I’m sad to see it go, I thought it had a fighting chance! But I’m not really surprised… Only one episode I saw (and I’ve seen them all) was really, truly as funny as a sitcom should be (genuine laughs from beginning to end). Still, despite the majority of episodes being unfunny, I’ve grown to love the characters portraying these situations. On a separate note, My Own Worst Enemy was a better show and it got canceled. Really sad. I watched The Forgotten, too, and it was all right. I think I really enjoyed this one (Breaking In) more, especially… Read more »
[…] Christian Slater decided to try a sitcom on FOX. Though many liked the series, it’s now been cancelled […]
I really really enjoyed this show and I am really pissed that Fox didn’t give it more of a chance =(
FOX just repeated history again. 3 Years ago they canceled Back To You, another great show with an A list cast, and know they just did it again.. who the **** makes these decisions…. I don’t get it, how did Fringe and Bobs Burgers get renewed, but this show gets canceled… WHAT THE ****!!!!!!
This sucks! I just got into it and just like most other shows, it got canned. I loved Dutch:(
I only watched one episode of this but I thought it was very original and rather well-scripted. I didnt know what night it was on so I kept missing it. This is a shame. Poor Slater.
This one I am really pissed off about. Ive supported Slater since the cluster**** network NBC canceled the brilliant My Own Worst Enemy. The Forgotten was good but not great, but Breaking In was fantastic, second to MOWE. Im sad to see this go.
I like that guy who was on Reaper and Grounded for Life, so I almost watched it…. but then I saw that it had Christian Slater, who always seems to act the same no matter what he’s in. I just couldn’t get myself to watch it. The fact that I won’t watch Karaoke Idol didn’t help, either.
And yet they renew “Bob’s Burgers?” I don’t get FOX programmers….
I’ve been watching this online, as I live in Thailand, but never really got into it. I absolutely love Christian Slater but this show just didn’t do it for me, so no, not a huge surprise it was canceled. Sad for him though 🙁
I thought about watching this show, but you know it was on Fox and I was like, “This is going to get canceled no matter if it is good or not”. Good thing I listened to myself and didn’t get to liking it.
I’m pissed. This show was FUNNY and original…they always cancel the good ones!
