For years, some people have been asking, “When is Smallville going to end? Isn’t he Superman yet?” Well, the series ending is now in sight. But who’s decision was it?
When Smallville began, it revolved around Clark Kent (Tom Welling), a high school student who was discovering his super powers. As time has gone on, he’s learned how to use his abilities and is now balancing his heroics with his work at the Daily Plant newspaper. The show’s current cast includes Allison Mack, Callum Blue, Cassidy Freeman, Erica Durance, and Justin Hartley.
Last season, The CW network moved Smallville from its usual Thursday night timeslot to Fridays. The ratings understandably dropped quite a bit but the network still renewed the show for a 10th season. The renewal had supposedly been hinging on whether or not Welling wanted to keep doing the series.
The decision has now been made that season 10 will be the show’s last. The network was supposed to make an official announcement at the upfronts but Welling jumped the gun and told HollywoodLife at an event on Tuesday night. The actor also reflected on what he’s learned by playing Clark Kent for so long. He said, “Once you think you have perfected things, you’ve got to keep practicing. There is always something to learn! It works for me and it will work for others.”

It remains to be seen who made the decision to end the show. Did the network decide to cancel it or was the choice made on the production side? Unless Welling (who’s now 33-years-old) decided that he’d had enough, it likely comes down to a mixture of the two and simple economics. The show will have been around for 10 seasons, has gotten more expensive to produce, and doesn’t bring as much ad revenue anymore.
On top of that, there are certainly more than enough episodes to keep the show running in syndication for a long time. By the end of the show’s run, there will be enough installments for a station to play once a day for seven months without repeating.
By announcing the ending a year in advance, the network can promote Smallville’s season 10 as the last and the producers will have ample time to plan how they want to wrap things up.
What do you think? Are you glad that Smallville’s coming to an end or should it keep going? Anything you’d like to see happen? Perhaps Lex Luthor’s return?

Omg! I’m only 14 & I love smallville!! I don’t want it to end. Tom Welling is an awesome actor & a New Yorker just like me. He’s done really great job as Clark Kent. I hope hes given more opputunities as an actor. Good luck 🙂
I dont want to see smallville end, its a great show. There are enough lose ends that they could have an 11th season. Such as Lex coming back and running for president which has been foreshadowed for quite some time, and with Martha being the Red Queen there has to be something there. Or where Lana went after leaving Smallville and Clark behind. Speaking of which we haven’t seen him in his uniform yet and he hasn’t mastered the ability to fly. They still haven’t had the wedding for Clark and Lois and now that Chloe and Oliver are married… Read more »
I don’t wanna Smallville to end, because this is one of my favorite show, I grown up with that show and this is one of them that makes me remind where I come from. I think this show should never end. And I guess the cast loves to act on this show, I’m pretty sure they don’t wanna Smallville to end either.. Hope someone will see that! X0x0
Smallville needs to keep going of season 11 because it not fair that Clark Kent does not fly yet also clark kent needs to wear the superman cape also he needs to fly and kill the Darkseid also kill lots of bad guys also they need to show us in season 11 with other superhereo’s like Batman, Green Latern, Wonder Woman, and other superhero also the bad villians.
I love Smallville and am so sad to find out that it’s ending! It’s been my favorite show for the past 10 years never missing an episode! I wish they would reconsider and continue Smallville. Love LOve LOve it!!!
I would love for Smallville to continue for years to come. I would like to see Superman become Superman. Fly, save people, fight crime, encompass all that Superman has been in the past. Bring back Lex. Do more with the Justice League characters. More Chloe also. Tom Welling should be the main character, he is Superman.
i think it should keep it going for at least two or three season more the quit ending i would to see more of clark kente and lois lane.
i think it should keep going but not with tom welling the main person he should hand it over to justin hartly and allison mack
Wish smallville was not endimg…..enjoy watching it every week with my family. It os just a story that can just keep on going
Look I have been following this series for ten years and it seems to me that when thing get really good they pull the plug on us. I mean i can’t take it anymore, they do it to us all the time. they took away Charmed, Angel, and Birds of Prey, the least they can do is coninue with the superman adventures. Stop taking the good shows away from us!! If I am not mistaken there is a lot of people out there that would love to see this perticular show continue on, there are plenty of superman fans, you… Read more »

I personaly would love for it to keep on going, I mean there is alot more to superman than what we have seen these past ten years, even though it was a great show we don’t want this to tun into a lois and clark after the 10th season and I have heard rumors of a show called metropolis it would be nice to tom interpreting superman in his full glory, also for Michael Rosenbaum to return and keep that lex vs superman we’ve always wanted to see. but we can only dream I guess, but it would be very… Read more »
I just got my kids started watching it and they are 22 & 26. 1 has bought all the seasons and the other 6 of them. Dvd sells are still going strong. Yes this is disappointing to a few of here on my home front. The new Superman coming out should have had Tom Welling in instead of someone that we havent been watching for all this time. It is upsetting to see it go. I thought it was really starting to get good.
