As fans of Hawaii Five-0 may already know, the CBS TV series isn’t having a great season. Is it on the chopping block to be cancelled?
The third season premiere brought in just a 1.8 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic, way down from the 3.4 rating from the start of season two. It looked like the poor debut might be a fluke but the three subsequent episodes haven’t performed much better. The fourth episode of the season registered a 2.1 rating, a lower number than the show had seen any time during seasons one or two.
Still, I don’t think the show is in danger of being cancelled. At the end of season three, Hawaii Five-0 should have about 70 episodes. That’s roughly enough for a syndication package but another season of 23-24 episodes would make a better one. CBS produces the series and they’ve already sold off-network rights so TNT can start airing it beginning Summer 2014. With CBS having financial incentive to keep the show going, I suspect Hawaii Five-0 is safe.

Here are the CBS season averages as of Thursday, November 1, 2012:
CBS non-scripted TV shows |
18-49 demo rating (actual) |
Viewers in millions |
Ratings pages |
---|---|---|---|
Survivor: Philippines | 2.9 (2.89) | 10.34 | cycle 25 ratings |
The Amazing Race | 2.6 (2.56) | 9.42 | cycle 21 ratings |
60 Minutes | 2.5 (2.52) | 13.22 | season 45 ratings |
48 Hours | 1.0 (0.96) | 4.67 | season 26 ratings |
These charts incorporate the daily final CBS show ratings (reported by Nielsen) and are sorted by the 18-49 demographic. Network advertisers typically prize those viewers most and so will pay more to reach them. There’s lots of information that the networks take into consideration when cancelling or renewing a TV series but the ratings are the biggest factor. The higher the ratings, the better chance that the show will be renewed. And yes, they take it into account when a show airs on a Friday or Saturday night.

Hawaii 5 0 is one of my very favorite shows. My family watches it religiously every week. Y he show has very good characters and character development. Please do cancel it!
Why is the show doing so badly compared to the original — which ran for twelve years? The answer is that the original show used solid story lines. The stories hold up over time. The characters are solid and believable. The background music was always based on the theme song, which gave thematic continuity. Today’s H50 depends way too much on special effects, general razzledazzle. The plots are too thin, and too much goes on per show. The producers need to examine the original for what worked and incorporate it into the new show. ¶ Apparently, the fourth season is… Read more »
It’s hard to believe that any show survives against Monday Night Football – hooray for Tivo! I enjoyed Chin’s kidnapping. I love Will Pun Lee; his character is a royal pain but you want to ‘root’ for the bad guy. Danny has a little romance and then ‘poof’ – nothing. Adam has an evil brother – what happened to him? I want to see the ‘bad-ass’ Steve, like we saw in the pilot. Forget about all the romance, give me some suspense. Lead me to the end that I’m so sure I have it figured out and you knock me… Read more »
I love it and hope its renewed for a fourth season and give wo fat more episodes
“It is a bad show , weak plots and very poor acting.”
Seriously KARI….either you don’t watch or this show has to much testosterone for you….
CSI Miami was one CSI to many and good riddance…..
Competition is fierce….Hawaii 5-0…..Revolution…Castle….ANNNND Monday Night Football is a major force also. New time slot may help…..still the best show out of the three…The November 12th show about terrorism and the 9-11 tie-in was the best of the series….IMHO..
I think the producers should have stayed with the premise in the the original Hawaii5-0…there was none of the “cutsy” banter back-and-forth all throughout the show in the original with Jack Lord & Co. Much better show than this remake….which has rather mediocre acting and stories.
Revolution has decimated this hotly contested slot (mostly between Castle and Hawaii Five-0) the same way Grimm did to the ultra-competitive (in terms of genre programming) Friday 9pm time slot. It’s really sad. There are entire hours/days I won’t watch broadcast television, while other slots are packed with shows I love.
I love this show! Apparently I must have bad taste in tv because it seems the stuff I like gets cancelled. I’m just not a fan of reality tv and comedies like Big Bang Theory and Two and a half men just don’t do anything for me. If they put on one more dancing or singing show, I think I will lose it!
It is doing well in the live+7 rating, it is now 3.0 so what is the problem?
Episode 4 about 400.000 more viewers than episode 3 almost 12 million.
It increases every week. It is a great show, but most people prefer DVR, commercial
free indeed.
I really enjoy Hawaii 5-0, but Monday at 10:00 p.m. is the hour to DVD not watch live for a large number of viewers, especially in the Eastern time zone. Revolution (on NBC) stole a lot of viewers for the first two months, but its viewership is steadily declining. I taped Revolution and watched, but my interest waned quickly. I just wish that the writing on Hawaii Five 0 would improve (hello and thanks writers of Person of Interest and Elementary!) It’s good, but not great (sorry). That being said, the actors on H50 are fantastic – love the Danno… Read more »
The poor debut was not a fluke . What happened is that last season the show got a lead in of 7.7 demo from 2 Broke Girls and that was the only reason it got a 3.4 demo in the last season premiere. And actually that 3.4 demo after a 7.7 demo lead in was bad, the drop was huge. The numbers were inflated last season until Christmas because of 2.5 man. If not this show would had bombed earlier. It is a bad show , weak plots and very poor acting , that got very lucky for 2 seasons… Read more »
I don’t think the show is in any danger at all. I do feel that if it was on earlier, 9:00 pm rather than 10:00 pm, it would have a larger “live” viewing vs. a dvr viewing. I, for one, never miss it and dvr it also. It’s the best show out there. I’m amazed at the amount of crap shows and reality shows that have survived, so being hoping they get rid of them before even thinking about H5-0.
I usually tape it too. Do they count that? Or do you have to watch it while its on for more ratings. I will be sad if it gets cancelled. I love that show.
we DVR the show and watch it the next night. Commercial free.
