Falling Nielsen ratings, rising costs, and perhaps a side of cast upheaval, seem to have taken a lethal bite out of an established daytime delicacy. ABC has cancelled The Chew TV show after seven seasons. Instead of season eight, the Alphabet Network has ordered an additional hour of Good Morning America — in the afternoon. Reportedly, the GMA expansion will not affect Live with Kelly & Ryan, which airs at 10:00am ET.
A cooking and lifestyle TV show, The Chew premiered on ABC on September 26, 2011, with original hosts Mario Batali, Daphne Oz, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, and Clinton Kelly. When the production did not replace Oz, who left after the sixth season, fans started listening for the kitchen timer of doom.
Then, during the first half of The Chew season seven, sexual impropriety allegations involving Batali (not show-related) came to light. After a brief investigation, the formerly celebrated chef and restaurateur was officially terminated from The Chew, in December of 2017. Once again, cancellation talk bubbled up — like yeast during proofing.
Symon, Hall, and Kelly have done their level best to fill the gaps at the host table, so perhaps this show has just reached its expiration date. According to reports, The Chew will finish out its regular seventh season production schedule. As with past seasons, new episodes will air throughout the month of June, with repackaged segments taking over until September.
No Season Eight — The Chew to be Replaced by Good Morning America
ABC News’ Good Morning America, will expand to three hours. The new third hour will air at 1 PM. EDT, noon CDT/PDT. The extra hour will replace ABC’s daytime food-themed program The Chew which, after seven seasons, 1454 episodes, multiple Emmy nominations and two Emmy Awards, will cease production at the end of this season but will continue to air as planned until September with all-new episodes airing in June.

“Over the past six years Good Morning America has solidified its place as America’s No. 1 morning show,” said Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks, and president, Disney|ABC Television. “We believe there is great opportunity for viewers and advertisers in expanding to a third hour.”
“While this is the right decision for our business, it is also bittersweet,” Sherwood added. “For seven years ‘The Chew’ has delighted audiences by delivering innovative food segments in an entertaining atmosphere. We applaud and thank Gordon Elliott, Aimee Householder, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly and the entire cast and crew for their great work and amazing run. And we wish them the very best.”
In telling his staff, executive producer and “The Chew” show creator Elliott saluted ABC’s move into a brand-new genre seven years ago. “Before ‘The Chew,’ no one had attempted a talk/food hybrid. Our hosts Clinton, Carla and Michael and the staff created television history executing the show as well as they did for all these years. I know I speak for all of the people who work on the show when I say it was the best television we have ever had the privilege to produce.”

“Good Morning America keeps finding new ways to inform and delight our audience. We recently expanded GMA through our social channels and a newly launched website. Now we will build a whole new hour of compelling content that is true to GMA;s spirit,” said James Goldston, president of ABC News.
Additional details about the program, including the title and anchors, will be announced in the coming months.
What do you think? Are you a fan of The Chew TV series? Do you think the Batali scandal and firing were the final straw, or was it time to end the show, anyhow? If it were up to you, would ABC have cancelled or renewed The Chew for an eighth season? Sound off in the comments.
6/15/18 update: The final episode airs. Should The Chew have been cancelled? Vote here.
ABC should have never cancelled the soap “All My Children.” The “Chew” didn’t last as long as the soap and never had a rating as high as the soap.
Please leave The Chew on the air and cancel The View. The Chew was entertaining and informative.
I hope ABC reconsiders cancelling The Chew. The comraderie between the three hosts now are part of why I enjoy the show so much. I don’t usually watch any daytime TV except for news but I will watch this show. I agree that no one needs another hour of GMA. Please reconsider
This is one of the worst cancellations I have ever seen ! The Chew audience deserves a choice of what we want and its definately not another hour of GMA. Personally I will never watch it and will think twice on all ABC shows. We need the Chew for many reasons for many people! I know there is a wide range of different ages that enjoys this show . PLEASE PLEASE SOMEONE DO SOMETHING!
I am so disappoint that the Chew is being cancelled. I love the recipes and have prepared many myself. Most of all I loved the humor the hosts brought to their program. I had planned to go to New York to attend the show. I hope ABC reconsiders and reinstates this great show. We don’t need another hour of GMA.
Well the last day I will watch ABC network is the last day of your show. Too many news and now another GMA. Good luck cast. Hope to catch Michael on more food network chanels
I really think it is a big mistake taking The Chew , off the air. The three remaining hosts, were extremely entertaining, with great recipes and most enjoyable. Several of my working friends, enjoyed the show during their lunch hour. I remember several years ago, ABC tried an afternoon GMA,with Josh Elliot and Lara Spencer and it was a big flop. If you want a third hour, why not take Rachel Ray off and move Live back an hour! I really hope you rethink this move. you are taking away a most enjoyable show. Thank you.
I’m so sad that The Chew has been canceled . I have recorded this show since it first came on the air. It was light, funny and informative show !!! I watch GMA in the morning but will not be watching the new show!
So sad to see The Chew cancelled. Who will watch another hour of GMA.I WILL NOT WATCH IT.WHO DECIDES ON WHAT WE WATCH??
Every day I look forward to a fun, informative hour. Clinton, Karla and Michael feel like friends and it is my time to relax, laugh and learn. THE CHEW IS THE BEST SHOW on TV. Each morning I watch GMA, switch to MSNBC and toggle between that and CNN until the VIEW comes on; then comes local news (F0x) and finally THE CHEW. I will NOT watch a recorded 3rd hour of GMA. My advice, cancel Kelly and Regis, Michael or Brian (whoever); the dumbest show on TV. Two hours of GMA are enough. Instead of the Kelly Ripon show,… Read more »
The chew is so different than GMA, different audience, different goals, different time of day, and different length. I have never been able to sit through a whole episode of GMA, it seems like an eternal search for news items that might be slightly salacious. In the afternoon, how many people would be willing to give up their time to listen to this sort of drivel. Children are home and some of the conversations are inappropriate for children on GMA. I usually start watching TV with The Chew, and then GH…that’s all I have time for before I have children… Read more »
In my opinion GMA is not the best news show. Too much gossip topics. It was greedy to take over the timeslot for The Chew and disappoint so many faithful fans. One less show that I’ll be watching.
I watched this show every day and have gotten so many good cooking tips. I think I have enjoyed the show even more with just the three of them hosting.
Just what we don’t need is another hour of news when most of it is so depressing in the time we are living right now.
Please another network put this show back on. I also will not be watching another hour of news.
I am distraught that I have spent the last 7 seasons faithfully having lunch with Michael, Clinton and Karla and now I won’t see them again, I bet I have tried 50% of their recipes. Couldn’t you just refresh the show and add another chef or even a visiting home cook with a lot of personality. I can’t believe that you can’t refigure the show and add some additional talent rather than cancel it. ABC should be embarrassed that they don’t have any creative minds on the payroll that could come up with something. Just a shame on you.
The Chew is my favorite lunchtime show. I RELY on it to lift my mood. I liked Daphne, even Mario, but THEY were never my favorites. Michael Symon is so funny and has taught me so many skills. Clinton Kelly is hilarious! and again has taught me so many social skills and how to party. Carla Hall is likeable and relatable and brings a homelike quality. It’s hard for me to say who is my favorite! PLEASE don’t cancel this NECESSARY program! If you must have 5 hosts, find some more. If this show is not on, I will probably… Read more »
