Tonight’s installment is the last episode of USA Network’s Common Law series — either for the season or for the series. It remains to be seen if this TV show will be cancelled or renewed for a second season.
Common Law follows a pair of LAPD detectives — Travis Marks (Michael Ealy) and Wes Mitchell (Warren Kole). They bicker but their talents mesh so well that their commanding officer, Captain Sutton (Jack McGee), orders them into counselling to keep the team together. Others in the cast include Sonya Walger, Elizabeth Chomko, Alicia Coppola, Nora Zehetner, and Reed Diamond.
The show debuted back on May 11th to 2.48 million viewers with a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic. In terms of viewers, that was about 30% lower than Fairly Legal’s second season premiere a couple months earlier. Common Law did however significantly outperform the ninth episode of Fairly Legal that preceded it.

Over the course of the season, Common Law’s ratings have declined and that’s not positive. At the end of July, they hit a new low with 1.76 million and a 0.5 demo rating. The season has averaged 2.13 million with a 0.6 demo rating.
The show is the lowest-rated scripted series currently on USA. That’s somewhat understandable because it does air on Friday nights, a lesser-watched night of television. Still, Common Law’s numbers are worse than Fairly Legal’s season average (which also aired on Fridays) and much lower than the other scripted shows on USA this summer.
What will USA do? It’s hard to say but, based on the ratings, there doesn’t seem to be an overwhelming reason for them to renew Common Law for a second season.

Please don’t cancel Common Law. It is funny, entertaining, suspensful, and something my family looks forward to watching. Plus it is a lot better than any reality T V show.
This is a great show on a terrible night. Far better than White Collar. Many new shows have ratings problems in the first few episodes (because 13 shows do NOT tell an audience much as ion the beginning, they are still finding what works and the audience is still getting to know the characters). Many, many wonderful shows have been dumped too early due to network stupidity and have lost a chance at a huge hit as it matures. Need I mention Firefly or Journeyman or even Terra Nova? Absolutely agree w/Kate! White Collar writing is stale. Time to let White Collar go (or improve the story line). Keep Common Law – terrific story line, acting.
Yes, jsr – they had a winning show when Neil and Peter worked together for the FBI as partners. When they started down the path of Neil and Mozzie taking the stolen classics and heading down to SA to retire as thieves – the whole thing unraveled for me (and my husband). Mozzie is best when he is brilliantly befuddled and a reluctant good guy. Niel’s rebellion against Peter fell flat and Peter saving Niel despite it all went over the top and our usual “remember – it’s TV world” couldn’t even dispell our unbelief. I love and adore this show. Its the only thing i watch on USA other than repeats of the Law And Order series. <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3. Put it in a different night and i totallyenjoyed the last SEASON finale.

Not only should it be renewed, I think it’s pretty obvious it should have Psych as a lead-in.
Get better writers and characters for Common Law better or cancel it. At the moment, Wes and Travis are the only substantial good characters in the show. In my opinion, Common Law is now USA’s second worst original show after Fairly Legal.

The show is entertaining, the characters just starting to be developed. I’ve really enjoyed the season! It would be nice to position it better and give more of us a chance to get involved. Actors Kole and Ealy are perfect, Sonya Walger is awesome! Please keep this show going!!!!!!!

Keep it! Renew it, put in on a different night, and for God’s sake, be consistent about broadcasting it.
My wife and I love the show. Move it to another night, if needed. We DVR it anyway. This good cast deserves another season!
