ABC has decided to run the season (likely series) finale of Detroit 1-8-7 this Sunday, March 20th, at 10pm. The freshman drama is airing on a special night because it was pre-empted by a 20/20 special featuring an interview with Charlie Sheen a couple weeks ago.
Detroit 1-8-7 is, of course, highly unlikely to return for season two. The TV series’ ratings have been terrible and just about anything else the network has put on in its place has performed better. It’s currently averaging a very disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.64 million viewers. That makes Detroit 1-8-7 the lowest-rated scripted series still on the network. Tuesday’s installment registered just a 1.2 in the demo.
Here’s the finale description from ABC:
SEASON FINALE
FITCH FACES OFF AGAINST HIS RUTHLESS NEW YORK ADVERSARY, ALBERT STRAM, WHILE HIS LIFE, THAT OF HIS SON AND THE REST OF THE SQUAD HANG IN THE BALANCE, ON THE SEASON FINALE OF ABC’S “DETROIT 1-8-7” Michael Imperioli’s Real Life Son, Vadim, Continues in His Guest Starring Role as Fitch’s Son, Bobby
“Blackout” – Fitch’s past comes back to haunt him when his old New York nemesis, Albert Stram, makes his presence known in Detroit just as the veteran detective is enjoying spending time with his son, Bobby. Stram’s not so subtle threats shake the usually unflappable Fitch. Meanwhile, the other detectives are called to the scene of a horrific homicide to find an entire family brutally murdered. Fitch tries to put the pieces of the puzzle together and it leads him to a devastating conclusion. With his back against the wall, Fitch asks Washington to protect Bobby, then leads Longford and Mahajan on an extremely dangerous mission to trap Stram; but which side of the law will he come down on in order to save his family and those in the squad? Meanwhile, Longford has second thoughts about his retirement; but is it too late? It’s a crucial turning point in the lives of all the detectives, on the Season Finale of “Detroit 1-8-7,” SUNDAY, MARCH 20 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

What do you think? Why do you think this TV series didn’t catch on? What worked? What didn’t?

It was a slow start with Detroit 1 8 7, but I got hooked rather quickly. Each episode is a change from the normal Cop Show routine. The Finale was riveting. I hope it keeps coming back.
I am glad that ABC decided to show the entire season of “Detroit 1-8-7,” especially since rumors of their cancelling it were circulating after only 8 episodes. I liked the actors, the scripts, the city (diminished as it is), everything about it. It was not about another team of photogenic agents who always seem to end up engaged in a full fledged shoot out at the end and come out unscathed (NCIS LA, Hawaii 5-0, Burn Notice). It was subtle, well acted and well scripted. It deserves another season, but who am I to decide? I don’t belong to the… Read more »
A great series but at a terrible time slot. Instead of going head to head with other similar established series, why not run it an hour earlier — or on a different night — and give time to establish viewership. Also, since ABC doesn’t have a contract with comcast/infinity, viewers can’t watch ABC’s series On Demand. It’s almost as though ABC wanted it to fail. It’s a shame.
This is one of the best shows on TV this season. I lookforward to watching each episode. I can never watch them in realtime, but I never miss seeing an episode online. I would really hate to see this show canceled.
I love this show. I think its the best TV show these days. The acting is top-notch and the script is world class. I genuinely hope that ABC does not cancel this show. It would be a tragedy.
Quality show. Have missed NYPD Blue and this has filled the void for me. It should be given an extended run. Solid characters but the way the finale wrapped up all the loose ends its seems that even the writers felt it was doomed from the start. This and Chicago Code are currently the best on network TV. Please keep it on the air.
This has become one of our (my family) favorite shows!! I love this show and like the various cast members on there… Pleas keep this show going!!! This is much better than the bachelor/bachelorette shows and all the other reality shows that are going on.
The series didn’t get a very fair shake. Any really good police drama that has come out in the past 4 years hasn’t. I’ve seen alot of comparisons to NCIS, CSI and Law & Order. All of which have put out “new” shows; spinoffs of the original, which one can attribute to their success. Just for the record, and I know I’m not the only one who thinks this, NCIS is terribly acted. The show doesn’t even have a very good story line. But people these days LOVE B.S. Detroit 187 is one of the best scripted dramas that i’ve… Read more »
Nobody liked it? Who was in charge of that survey anyway? I think they ripped you off. We loved the show, it looked real, as opposed to all the hi-tech, lab oriented crime shows. At least it was not a so called reality show. We also thought it was an improvement over the Brothers&Sisters soap opera that it replaced. Oh well, I watched it, nothing else can do to help.
Keep this show on the air. It’s one of the best shows in several years. I’m so tired of reality TV shows where “someone will be going home” in every episode. It’s saddening that this show is in danger of being cancelled.
I really looked forward to watching this program on Tuesday evenings. I can’t believe there wasn’t enough interest to keep Detroit 1-8-7 on the air. I wish the powers that be would reconsider cancelling this program.
I really look forward to watching this show on Tuesday nights. I’m from north of Detroit but went into the city many times. It’s really to bad they aren’t keeping this show on the air. Very poor decision in my mind.
While the first episode was a bit strange with the language used and bleeped and the visually censored sections, the producers made a great comeback with well written and produced shows. Sometimes it takes an audience a little time to appreciate a new show. Maybe it’s because this show is filmed in and about Detroit that turns some people away. Maybe a Hawaii or New York location would fare better. However I believe that the writers have developed a show that is more realistic and far superior than many of the others out there. I hope this show survives.
This is one of my favorite police dramas. It has upset me that it has been pre-empted so many times. I look forward to watching it each week. I do hope ABC will not cancel this show.
One of the best show on TV this year. Realistic, great acting, super characters! Much better that NCIS, NCIS LA, and all of the CSI series. If ABC cancels, it would be a shame. Put it in a solid time slot and KEEP IT!
