It seems that stakes and network executives can take a vampire down. NBC has cancelled the Dracula TV show after one season of 10 episodes.
NBC’s Dracula is a retelling of the classic Bram Stoker story. In London, Dracula (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is posing as an American entrepreneur while he seeks revenge on those who cursed him. He doesn’t count on falling in love with a woman (Jessica De Gouw) who looks just like his deceased wife. Others in the cast include Thomas Kretschmann, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Victoria Smurfit, Katie McGrath, and Nonso Anozie.
The show’s debut did respecatably for a Friday night show but dropped much lower in subsequent weeks. The first season averaged a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.25 million total viewers.
Hannibal and Dracula are both produced under a unique deal that costs the network much less than other original drama series. Hannibal’s license fee is set to go down for season three so the network ultimately decided to renew that show and cancel Dracula.
It seems like Dracula’s studios could still potentially produce a second season for another outlet but there hasn’t been any news of that thus far.
What do you think? Do you think Dracula should have been cancelled or renewed for a second season? Would you follow the series to another channel or pay to see a second season?
Finally….a vampire show that is well done and sticks to folk lore. So what do you do? You cancel it! I hung on to every episode. I have been WAITING for the new season since last year. What is going on? Is there something that is not being made public about the cast, writers, etc. ? Just doesn’t make any sense………Star Trek ran for 3 seasons and had re-runs. The fan base grew. If you are worried about future programming because of your tie to the original story, you are nuts. You can stretch this out as much as you… Read more »
Keep Dracula amazing show!
I did enjoy the show and i was looking for another season of Dracula. I hope the network reconsiders.
Stupid move. Should have kept Dracula. I will follow it to whatever channel.
I agree NBC is starting to suck at their choice of shows they keep and get rid of.
They need to do something different.
just more stupid decisions by the front office. put it on pay tv I will pay the price. nbc has nothing to offer in the way of entertainment.
I’m very disappointed with NBC and I hope that they World bring back Dracula or that Dracula will be brought to another station it was a great program it had a great storyline and it needs to be continued
NBC is just a ridiculous network. Now that they have cancelled Dracula, there are only two shows I will be watching on their network: Parks and Rec and Grimm. All the rest of their current shows are reality crap or idiotic sitcoms like “Undateable.” Undateable? Unwatchable! Also, none of the new shows that they have coming up in the fall look remotely interesting. Just what television needs: more lawyers, more cops, more doctors. Not!
I really enjoyed the Dracula series. It should never have been canceled. If it premiers on another station I will surely watch it.
I am confused how a license fee for Hannibal would be lower than Dracula whose basic storyline has been around nearly 117 years? I think the out of touch powers-that-be nixed Season 2 for nothing other than what they thought to be a ‘tired’ concept in their itty-bitty brains. NBC-Universal-Comcast-G4-USA-Bravo-SyFy-Hulu-Chiller, gee whiz how about another detective/lawyer/medical drama instead?!
It is a great show, wonderful story line….. hope that someone will pick it up.
I really hope Dracula gets picked up by another network! I am so disappointed this was canceled! They never give the good shows enough time to gain momentum, if it isn’t an instant hit they get rid of it! I know a lot if people that won’t watch a new show until
it makes it to at least the second season, it’s too disappointing to get hooked & it be canceled yet again!
Another thoughtful movie. I am so disappointed that it is to be cancelled. Perhaps a cable channel will pick it up.
I hope it gets picked up by another network . CW maybe?? They seem to have all the cool shows these days. My whole family loved Dracula.
I’m furious, that it was just canceled.
I work over, but will not sleep when I get home, until I watch it on hulul plus, so I was paying to watch, and will still pay.
Its very upsetting that Dracula will not be back for a second season. I was very much enjoying the series. It was very refreshing to see something other than more stupid reality shows that seem to be the only thing people can make these days. It will be sorely missed. Such a waste. Booooooo!!!!
Very sad that it will not be back for a 2nd season, they left it as if they would be bringing it back. It was one of the best shows on TV because with all the reality crap shows it was nice to see a drama series again. Such a shame.
Please bring a season 2 to Dracula…I would pay to have whatever channel will carry this series. that is all….
